This documentary follows the then world champion All Blacks on a 1989 tour of Wales and Ireland. With star winger John Kirwan as guide, 'The All Black Film Unit' gives a players’ insight into an international tour in pre-professional, pre-media trained times - there’s even a plate of oranges. Match, training, and travel footage is complemented by relaxed encounters with players.

I remember reading about this tour in Ridge's book. Apparently, he and Frano Botica tried to take on Richard Loe on the team bus after Loe took Ridge's hat off his head and crushed to shreds but Loe held them both off. Also, there was another massive fight between the young guys/debutants (which included Ridge) who sat at the front, and the OGs who sat at the back (which included JK and most of those big monstrous forwards), which is traditional in every tour where the younger ones try to claim the back of the bus. Don't know if the current ABs still do that stuff.
@davidk7672
@davidk7672 2 жыл бұрын
If there was a social pecking order of some kind, it certainly would be par the course for elite rugby. On the bus Zinzan takes a dig at Ridgie for being the only player in their entourage who wasn't wearing a dress shirt. It was a funny moment cause Ridgie took it seriously
@MobKnowledge
@MobKnowledge 2 жыл бұрын
@@davidk7672 yeah Ridge's reaction was odd, especially because he'd later become known for comedy and goofing around. I remember from the book though that Zinny used to give him rides to and from trainings and, back when league was making offers to both of them, they both confided to each other how much they'd respectively been offered, so they were mates off the field. If it wasn't for lockdown, I'd go back to my parents' place and hunt for that book. It was great!

The big thing was the NZ players were professional way before the Irish and Welsh rugby unions got there act together . England were the only British team coming from the first ever Rugby World Cup, that changed there game from amateur to professional and England changed there league system, and took up the professional mantra undercover but more in the professional ethic in training . In Wales the Wales first and second Welsh team left to go to rugby league, after the WRU meeting with the players resulted in the biggest rugby players exodus ever to rugby league why the WRU did not want to change there structure. The English wanted Welsh clubs to join them in starting a new league called the Courage league with the English teams across the bridge, but the WRU didn’t want that and because of that left Wales in the rugby wilderness for a quite a long time..
