What a fun movie! I LOVED the character dynamics in this film and the overlapping craziness of the dialogue was something truly wonderful as that would definitely be how boys their age talk. Richard Donner once again shines as a director as well ensuring that his simple camera work captures everything and more in frame. What a fun adventure! Goonies never say die! Thanks for watching! Have a great day! :)

The ship was a real set, the kids weren't allowed to see it until it was time to film the scene. They were backed into the water and told to turn around, those are their real first reactions. Except Josh Brolin who needed to redo the scene because he turned around and screamed "holy shit!".🤣

The film referenced by the police officer on the phone was Gremlins (1984). A recent hit, from the year before, also produced by Spielberg. A number of scenes in The Goonies were filmed by Spielberg as an un-credited First Assistant Director. One scene was the pipe scene. He prepared Corey Feldman (Mouth) by whispering in his ear just before the take that he was going to meet Michael Jackson - his idol. Next he shouted roll and the camera pushed in for an extreme close up of Feldman shouting, 'Pump pressure!' That's the take they used.

Love the point you make about over-lapping dialogue 39:58 - this movie has so much of it, and it really adds to the excitement. Consider watching the 80's movie Clue (based off the board game) with Tim Curry, Madeline Kahn and Christopher Lloyd, the dialogue is excellent in that movie too and has lots of good overlapping moments.

The Fratellis are loosely based off Ma Barker and the Barker-Karpis gang during the "public enemy era" of America crime history. While Ma Barker's leadership is in dispute, she was definitely an accomplish to the gang's many robberies and murders. Ma Barker and the gang met their end in a house off Lake Weir in Florida. You should read more about them. Fun Fact: One Eyed Willie's ship, The Inferno, was 105 feet long and took 2-1/2 months to construct. It was modeled after Errol Flynn's ship in The Sea Hawk (1940). The sails required more than 7,000 square feet of material, the largest measured 30ft by 60ft. Some of the ship's rigging was recycled for the Pirates of the Caribbean ship at Disneyland, which was being renovated at the time. Heartbreaking Fact: According to Sean Astin, he was allowed to keep the treasure map used in the film. Several years later his mother (and actress) Patty Duke discovered it, thought it was just a crinkled piece of paper, and threw it in the bin.

Sean Astin went on to STRANGER THINGS after LOTR, his dad was John Astin (Gomes Addams from The Addams Family TV series in the 1960s and his mom won her best supporting actress Oscar for THE MIRACLE WORKER (she played the young Helen Keller) in 1962 which made her the youngest actress (UP TO THAT TIME) to win such a prestigious award. So, Sean is doing all right. (He's currently worth ten million dollars so he can afford to hire people to cry for him if he feels down). As for Josh's dad (James Brolin) his career is also quite respectable (two Golden Globes and an Emmy). Check him out in THE CAR from 1977.

Yeah for me it was, neighborhood kids of various ages, afterschool bike riding and mischief far and wide, fort building and exploration in the large local forested park at one end of the street, coast and beach with ruined WW2 gun emplacements only a short distance down the road, relatively isolate area. Just no crime gangs, pirate ships or booty traps... couldnt be perfect, although our area was also a mix of very rich and lower income families... but childhood in the 80's was fun.

There are laws in place when it comes to the recovery of historical artifacts. Generally speaking, whoever finds it is not allowed to keep it, but they often are awarded a finder's fee, which is usually a percentage of the value of the recovered items. In this case, the ship itself would earn them a decent amount of money and after taking into account the "treasure", skeletons, weapons, clothing and anything else aboard the ship, not to mention the value of all the stuff they found while getting there, their families would certainly be set for a few years.

This was Josh Brolin's first role, but he lied in his casting CV, so there's no "Introducing" with his name on screen. Corey Feldman got role of Mouth thanks to his role of Tommy Jarvis in "Friday The 13th Pat IV: The Final Chapter". The scene with octopus was shot, but it was cut in editing. There is still gossip about the sequel even though Ann Ramsey is dead for long time. Josh Brolin and Corey Feldman are still keen on shot this project. Another great film from Richard Donner is 1976 "The Omen" starring Gregory Peck, Lee Remick and David Warner. It's a cursed film and I'm not joking. Many people died soon after making this movie, got hurt or nearly Died while shooting this movie (like Donner who was taken as a hostage by IRA), stuntman who was bitten by a dog or special effect guy who died almost like one of the characters in "The Omen". Anyway, one of the best classic horror movies of all time.

There's lots of things in this movie that you wouldn't find in a normal "kid's" movie, and I think that opening scene is intended to let parents know up front that this actually isn't a movie aimed at kids. It's aimed at teenagers or older, it just has some kids in it. I believe the intention of the filmmakers (Spielberg is rumored to have shadow directed this film) was to make a movie for adults about kids, but the intention of the studio was to have it marketed it as a family film. It was a weird transitional time for the ratings board back then though, PG-13 had just been invented and they barely had a grasp on how to rate each movie compared to the old G-PG-R-X system, and this one ended up as PG.

What if you found treasure? It all depends on where you found it. On private land? Belongs to the land owner (sorry). On public land? US? The feds get to keep most of it. State? Depends on the state (different laws). In the ocean? So, a company found a sunken Spanish galleon from hundreds of years ago off the coast of Florida. Turned into an ugly court fight with the Spanish govt. saying that the treasure belonged to them. The court fight still isn't over on this. Important-if you find treasure, tell NO ONE, melt it down into something else.

After Richard Donner made this film he was offered another kids adventure movie called 'The Lost Boys'. It was a movie about vampire kids who befriend human kids and end up going on a similar Goonie type adventure. Donner turned it down because he really didn't want to do another similar film. The movie was given to director Joel Schumacher who got the script rewritten to be about young adults and teens. It ended up becoming the horror movie 'The Lost Boys' which Corey Feldman (Mouth) also starred in. The reaction the kids have to the pirate ship was genuine on film, except for two of them. Brolin and Feldman. Brolin cursed when he first saw it so he had to do a retake and Feldman pretended to act surprised because he and a buddy of his had sneaked on to the set the day before. There was a subplot involving gorillas. After Sloth forces the pipes up in the ground, it causes some Gorillas to escape from the zoo and they go on a joyride in a car. Also there was an alternate ending where the goonies show up back at the house instead of on the beach. as the dad is about to sign over the deed, the housekeeper, who has taken the kids jackets, is in the laundry room and find the jewels. she then runs out and we get a scene similar to the one on the beach. these videos can be found on youtube. The water around the pirate ship was dyed blue. the kids were coughing up blue gunk for weeks after the shoot. Notice how Data says something about an octopus? There was no octopus was there. Was he exaggerating about their adventure? No. Actually a scene involving an octopus was shot in the water by the pirate ship. No matter what, it looked very fake so they just removed the scene. There are many movies that have been shot in the same town from the Goonies and you can tell. While watching those other movies, you wonder if you'll just see one of the goonies pop up in the backgroudn. There are many but some of the popular ones are Kindergarten Cop starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Free Willy, Short Circuit, and The Ring two,

23:32 All right. But you should know that sudden serious brain injury causes the victim to bite down hard. In fact, I hear the bite reflex is so strong they have to pry the victims jaws open with a crowbar!

Richard Donner also directed this film with Frodo (Elijah Wood) called "Radio Flyer" that is also worth watching and I think is amazing kids movie considering the theme it tackles. If you haven't seen it already.

The pirate ship was not a matte painting, it was a real pirate ship built for the movie. The kids' reactions were real Steven Spielberg wanted to get their genuine reactions. Unfortunately the ship was disassembled after the movie.

The ship wasn't a matte painting! They actually built a full-scale model ship, and Donner even filmed the kids seeing it for the first time (he didn't let them see it before they filmed the reveal) to get a genuine reaction. Unfortunately, those reactions weren't quite what he wanted, and what we see in the film is the second take. But still, quite ambitious. [per wikipedia article]

19:55 check out the song "So Long, Astoria" by The Ataris (and really the whole album by the same name) if you like this line. The whole album uses this movie as a springboard for its themes, and this line in particular is a big part of that track. (Also on the subject of music, Cyndi Lauper did a 2 part music video in conjunction with this film. The song is called Good Enough if you want to watch the videos. They're fun)

30:00 you wouldn't be allowed to sell it easily, nowadays in our modern times it would be considered national treasure and would be owned by the city, country. I'm pretty sure the movie ignore this as a way to make it an entertainining story. That said, since Mickey's dad is an important person for the city museum it may be possible he would get some money out of this discovery.

Drama - or books, for that matter - do not and should not reproduce natural speech. Not only overlapping dialogue; but real speech has pauses, fragmentary sentences, repetition, back-tracking, and so on. Faithful transcripts of actual conversation is almost shocking, because our mental filters are used to correcting what we hear (and say) to smooth speech. One of the by-products of Nixon's Watergate scandal was a volume of mostly faithful transcripts of conversations from the White House tapes. It's [expletive deleted] fascinating reading. Of course, real conversations are also notable for their banality, most of the time.
