I've loved this particular episode since I was twelve! At sixty- five it's still a favourite and makes my 13 year old Granddaughter laugh too - a lot !

Yes, being British, my close colleagues and I were avid fans of the Goon Show in the 50's, listening to it every Tuesday evening on the BBC home programme,

I grew up on American radio slapstick, but the Goons are just side-splittingly funny on another level.

Loved this episode since I was twelve and introduced to The Goons by Brother-in-Law in '63. Granddaughter enjoys it equally today.

Back in the 1950s when I was quite small, I was given a Crystal Set Radio for my birthday. It worked best with the Australian Broardcasting Commission's large AM transmitters and I discovered that the Goon Show was played every week. So I listened. I loved Eccles and Blue Bottle in particular. I could not really understand what was going on but I listened to it every week. I particularly liked the episode where the Goons climbed Mt Everest from the inside. Many years later I was not long married and the ABC again started broadcasting the Goons every Saturday at Noon on their new FM transmitter. Now I listened again and started to realise just how wonderful the Goons were. They were the foundation of British humour with the Monty Python mobcarrying the tradition on.

Probably my favourite Goon Show..................ever! I love the line, "The wick in the engine's gone out!"
I think when he said "Liquourish gives you a good run for your money" he meant that it acts as a laxative.

The Dreaded Batter Pudding Hurler of Bexhill-on-Sea has gotta to be the funniest Goon Show for me.

In my youth one of the guys who I shared accommodation with broke into Sainsbury's supermarket. I don't know the specifics but for some reason he and his mate got their hands on a load of eggs. We ate eggs every day for at least a month. My mate Andy made curried eggs. I remember being on a train the following day and we stank the carriage out as we could not stop breaking wind. I told a lady who was on the train this story after she complained about our very smelly farts and she doubled up with laughter.

Fart jokes are usually funny here's one...whats the definition of A PUFF ADDER ...someone who farts in the bath and counts the bubbles.😂😎

....Christmas Eve, and still no offers of pantomime! .....No, I'll join the army. It's too darn noisy in the Navy! .....No more curried eggs for me! .....Do we have nothing in common? Glorious lines in possibly the Best Goon Show of all!

.....I got to make a livin' too y' know. .....Aw, nobodies perfect! .....I wonder if he's the right man for the job? I add and totally agree with your comment.

"Give myself up? I can't quite break myself of that habit" Judging by the stony silence that follows, it would seem that in the 1950s nobody (even loyal fans) could believe that Neddy was referring to THAT SUBJECT! In fact, Harry seems slightly thrown by the lack of response.

It doesn't matter how much you pay, where you eat, who cooks it,how poncy the critics say it is, how much preparation and love goes into it food all ends up the same colour in the end. ;^)

The songs were removed because of copyright problems along with anything that was deemed offensive, they often referred to Ray Ellington's heritage...

Thanks for posting this -- and for removing the only dated part of the Goon Shows -- the music.

I know what you mean. I just saw Hard Day`s Night again. Sadly they kept all all the old music in. I mean, that stuff is nearly 50 years old.

This episode is one of four which were released on LPs by EMI/HMV in the early 1960s. The songs were removed from them then, perhaps to reduce the time needed on one side of an LP, or more probably because of additional contractual costs that would have arisen in clearing the music and musicians. It may be that the BBC sold the publishing rights to these four great episodes, and they can longer be heard in their entirety, with the songs, except when broadcast on radio.

The songs were definitely removed to reduce the time, LPs were about 22 or 23 minutes per side. When my father copied a double LP set (Jeff Wayne's War Of The Worlds) onto a C-90 cassette ( to play in the car) he had to splice in an extra minute of tape (give or take) to make it all fit.
