That book was Mr McMurtry's greatest achievement, though it is often worth hunting in old bookstores for some other of his best tomes. I recommend "In A Shallow Grave" to be amongst his best short essays of Texas. What a man! What a writer! What a country he wrote about! I was very, very distressed to hear of his death.

I am 76 years old. I have lived a colorful life. I have done pretty much what I wanted to do. I have had fun, good times, had bad times but I managed to enjoy it all. If I could go back and do it again, I would do the same things just twice as much of it. Yippee.

Lord knows, I'll meet Jesus with whiskey on my breath. I spend most days trying to figure out how to keep food on my family's table. We don't starve by any means. And I'm not a drunkard either. I drove a semi for 15 years, faced the slow death of my wife of 16 years, stood by her side in what will be my home in the future when she left this mortal plane. Now I'm raising our daughter, not my blood, but I met her when she was 6 weeks old. She is 18 now about to graduate high school in 2 months time. I have a new fiance. She is mad at me tonight. Says I loved the kids mother more than her. Yes I did. We had a love built over time. This is a love I hope to build over time too. Augustus McRay had a love over time, can't remember her name, Maggie keeps flashing in my mind. I can't remember that good, 3 heart attacks and 2 strokes have taken my memory. Disabled now. Can't hardly walk. But this woman has stood beside me the way Call stood beside McRay. Probably not spelling his name right. I love her. I just wish she wouldn't doubt me so much. I do all I can, sacrifice my happiness over hers so much. Just wish she could see it.

Like so many others that still love this great production, I watch it still, regularly. The story, the cast everything was just magic. My father and I watched Lonesome Dove over and over through the years and laughed and cried, I guess like so many other great fans do. My Dad is gone now and watching the movie now is somewhat bittersweet for me. He said once that this movie is under appreciated because ALL the important lessons of life can be learned viewing it. Friendship, love, loss, honor, integrity, hardship......he could go on and on and of course he was right. Lonesome Dove has and is touching the lives of so many even after the old town is gone. "They'll all forget you, Gus. But I won't. Whenever it comes morning or evening, I'll think of you, Darlin.

And wow, if your comment is an example of someone who does not believe in God, you are not doing yourself any favours. Because you sound totally miserable and far over reacting to a simple statement.

Very Good and Thank You, Life is about Living, That's for sure Lonesome Dove was indeed a great adventure in life and so many of the different aspects. Gus, realized that the choice he made to let the Love He Had for Clara was probably not the best one but he had made it and he had to live with it, but he definitely wanted to rekindle that feeling again. We all have to live with our choices, so make good ones, well thought out ones and if you have the chance to love another, hold on to that for as long as you can. It will sustain you. Life is about Living and Love is the highest point achievable on this side.

I used a story from Lonesome Dove in a eulogy for an amazing 93-year-old Scouter I was privileged to know long after he retired. There is a memorable scene in the movie "Lonesome Dove" you may recall…. Josh Deets is speared while trying the save a blind Indian child. Gus McCrae has just finished carving the wooden marker for Josh's grave and Pea Eye says… "What's it read, Gus?" Gus says… "It says, "Josh Deets. Served with me 30 years. Fought in 21 engagements with the Comanche and the Kiowa. Cheerful in all weathers. Never shirked a task. Splendid behavior." That's what it says." Pea Eye says… "My lord. Old Deets is gone. My lord." In Scouting, we could write something similar for our friend Joe. It could say… Joe Galbraith. Served with us 82 years. Fought in 67 roundups bringing Scouting to neighborhoods where the competition was often violent gangs, drug dealers and worse. Cheerful in all weathers. Never shirked a task. Splendid behavior." That's what it would say. However, if you were to say… "My lord. Old Joe is gone." …you would be wrong. Because every person in this room is different… better… and richer for having known this good man. We carry his spirit… He lives on in us if we let him. He will be with us every time we do a good turn, every time you express "knightly" good manners and every time you sing "God Bless America."

Well, sort of. What Jesus was referring to was not earthly life and “running with the buffalo”. It was eternal life through faith in Him (see John 11:25). Life on earth is not where it’s at. Our time here should be spent celebrating His grace and our undeserved forgiveness for our sins that is given to is by Jesus’ perfect life and death. Without Jesus, we are all lost and condemned.

Jake Spoon ended up hanging himself because he realized that by riding with these murdering outlaws, he had been complicit in the death of innocent people. He knew that was against a Texas Ranger's code because Jake HAD been a ranger himself. The code was, 'You ride with an outlaw, you die with an outlaw'. His slick dealing, selfishness and teetering on the edge of the law took him further away from what made him a decent human being. Jake had lost his way. As an act of kindness, friendship and as a way to atone for what he'd stood against himself--he spared his friends from having to hang him themselves. In his mind, it was the only honorable thing left to do.

I'm very Thankful To The One and Only One True God and Father of Jesus Christ and Me I have a knowledge of my Father's Word rightly divided.John 4:23,24. " 23. But the hour comes, and now is, when the true worshipers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seek such to worship him. [Reason?] God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth." It is very clear My Savior brought a record to everyone who wants to know about The true worshipers and the false worshipers..Genesis 3:5. tells us who the false one's are and what they believe and teach and this is how and what they will see in everything no matter what is is..They will be Matthew 23..The true one's will always know what their Father God wants for them and the world of the hungry 1-Timothy 2:4. "Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth." Well what is The knowledge of The truth? It Is NOT Genesis 3:5! As all religious clubs push to enslave the mind and heart with..God tells us in the next verses.."For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus." Jesus even taught the very same truth! God is Not a man as His Son was! God is NOT the son of Man Jesus was! God is not three-in-one gods as the religious world teaches..God is Spirit not the son of Man Isaiah 43-45 prove this over and over..As does Numbers 23:19..So where did these world educated men and women get that God is a three part being? From the same one who pushed it first! Genesis 3:5." For God does know that in the day you eat thereof, then your Eyes shall be opened, and you [not their eyes but they would be] shall be as gods, knowing good and evil." Hebrews 4:12. God is the discerner between Good and Evil Not the devil not the theories of worldly trained and educated religious Men! Only The One True God Not any three in one gods!! This is why men like this can only see sad heavy gloomy doom for themselves and everyone else...What a Vile way to speak of The Word of all life and good John 1:4.!..Deuteronomy 30:15...Two kinds of worshipers and two kinds of doctrine?? Yes there is..LYBIC

Janetta, aren’t we all just like Gus or just like Call at different times. Jesus asks us to cast the first stone if we are without sin.. but until then we accept that we are broken sinners in need of a savior... Isn’t that the picture we get from Gus? He’s a man willing to lay down his life for his friends and yet with all his warts showing. Jesus withstanding, there are no saints in the Bible. There are just broken men before a Holy God seeking His forgiveness and vowing to walk better in the future. Isn’t that what the righteous man, the humble man should ask of a Holy God?

Definitely agree Spoon's hanging, under those particular circumstances and known biological son in attendance, would never ever gave happened. Also, Diane Lane just doesn't quite convey the grinding effects of being whored out to strangers for extended period of time. And there were lots of Christian people out west back then...but no real references to true belief anywhere in the lengthy story. You have a good point.
