On today's episode of Urban Valor, we feature retired Marine Gunnery Sergeant Ryan Kuperus, whose story takes us from the dairy farms of Newark, New York, to the intense battlefields of Afghanistan. Inspired by his Korean War veteran grandfather, Ryan chose to serve his country as a Marine, using the work ethic instilled in him since childhood.
Ryan details his experiences as a Reconnaissance Marine in Afghanistan. The relentless combat his recon platoon faced gives you a glimpse into the realities of modern warfare. Ryan brings to life the challenges, dangers, and split-second decisions that define combat operations.
The episode explores Ryan's progression to Force Reconnaissance and his role as an instructor, where he helped shape some of America's most elite warriors. It then explores his transition out of military service, a journey familiar to many veterans. He shares his current efforts to serve the veteran community, showing the ongoing commitment many former service members have to their fellow warriors!

Imagine being a foreigner watching this. America's wars since the ww2 have been pretty much unesseary and totally avoidable. And certain wars like the ones in the middle east were fought with all volunteer armies. I think most people do, at least the first time as an adult anyway. Hard to forget. 😂. First time you have a raging flu, too much of whatever supplement, drugs, food, alcohol, whatever. You would like to think after age 2 or so, it wouldn't be a thing. 😂 Then life tells you different in your young adult years, due to one of the factors above. 😂 There is always the elusive shart when you least expect it, just to make you remember to maintain a little humility, no matter how awesome you think you are. 😂😂😂

Man, I thought I had it bad when the team meal gave me the Hershey Squirts. I told the coach I had to sit on the toilet at halftime. I couldn’t listen to his speech. Stayed in there while the team warmed back up. I was unsuccessful. Got back to the field at the kickoff. We received the ball. Went out to the huddle with tears in my eyes. Guts bubbling. Shaking my head around, I kept saying “I’m gonna shit my pants, I’m gonna shit my pants.” QB tells me to STFU. Get the play call, I have no clue what it is. Get on the line at LT. Ball snaps, hit the DT and on impact I explode. Come back to the huddle, QB says “OMG KingTurdle! YOU SHIT YOUR PANTS!” Go to the sidelines, coach puts the second string OT in. Sit out a couple plays. Coach says “well KingTurdle, you playing with shit in your pants is better than second string playing.”Sends me back in. Game ends, we loose. I get to the locker room. By the time I’m done everyone is packed up and on the bus. I wipe my self as clean as I can (not very). Walk out to the bus, climb the stairs, everyone is laughing at me. There’s one open seat left….. Next to our female kicker.

I’m prescribed Provigil for Narcolepsy and it does help clear you out in the morning if you catch my drift, but it is a not a true stimulant. Provigil is a histamine agonist, meaning it tells your brain to produce more histamine which heightens alertness and keeps you awake for 4-6 hours. It’s basically the opposite of an antihistamine. It’s considered the safest stimulant on the market and that’s why the military and Narcoleptics are prescribed it. Plus it’s non-addictive. Great stuff.

Omg! I’m a NP but in the late 90’s when Provigil came out, I was a registered nurse working in a family practice office. The Provigil rep would come in with samples preaching that this new miracle drug gave you mind clarity. That anyone could take and it would make you sharper. He suggested we all give it a try, thinking we’d love it and push the drug for him. Back then they got incentives for the amount of drugs prescribed. So, myself, the MA and the two receptionists decided to give it a try. I mean why not. Well, not only were we all beating the bathroom door down to take turns shitting but it gave you the worst anxiety you’ve ever had. I was all but in tears. So, it is not in fact made for mind clarity and it is not made for everyone. It’s made for narcolepsy, sleep apnea and shift work. Like you’re exhausted after working 10 hours and need that boost to get you to the 12 hour mark. And by the way, what we did was dumb, it was a long time ago and no one should ever take a medication that is not prescribed. Also, this was when the medication first came out. They’ve have learned a lot since then.

This isn’t ptsd. vets want to talk about combat, they don’t want to talk about combat to people who don’t understand combat and try to relate as if they ever could and then say “Thank you for your service” or “I appreciate what you boys did back there” hahahaha
