I agree with your last sentence 100%. However in regards to the Ukraine aid thing, funds are set aside and appropriated for things ahead of time. For example in 2023 the total defense budget for the year was 816.7 billion. That year, 46 billion went to aid to Ukraine, which is 5% of the actual defense budget. They are NOT taking from other social programs and giving it to Ukraine. That said, I do agree that defense budget overall seems astronomical relative to other expenses the government budgets for.

I recall in the CPI basket, back in the day until the '70s for meat they used to use the price of a T-bone steak as the meat baseline, and over generations, they've gone to cheapest cuts of meat like price of chuck and offal to represent "meat" to lie that price of meat has gone down.
