Billy, you are not going to believe this! I was looking at an extra(standby) tomato plant and thinking, "hmm, what can I mix up to fertilize this? Banana water-sure.". and then it hit me. I was standing RIGHT beside mature comfrey!😂😂😂😂

Guys. I rescued a stuck butterfly with comfrey! He was fluttering up in the rafters of our porch under the clear carbon roofing. I tried so many things. Then the www informed me that butterflies “adore” comfrey. I tied some to an extension pole and put it up beside him or her and finally ‘they’ climbed on and let me lower her down. Him… who knows!?! Lol Godspeed little flutter by.

You guys seem to say that we shouldn't, maybe. That's the impression I got but I would like to know why. Love you Guys. Father Yah has used you guys to change my life in a wonderful way.

I live in Southeast Alabama and colon grass has become the bane of my existence. When you burn it the temperature is so high and it burns like gas or petroleum products. County ageny says don't burn and don't till. The herbicide to control this is very very expensive. It got started in my area from the boxcars on the freight train. Trying to keep it mowed before it heads out to seed. Been a battle for 10 years and no end in sight

Anything that burns like that, sounds like its got a lot of excellent potential for a biofuel. You can probably get away with making/purchasing a biodigester to make this stuff into cooking gas .There are tutorials online , and the start up/costs with ROI is very reasonable. I just helped set up a commercial system for about 1000$ which is about the size of a parked car that turns a 5 gallon bucket of horse poop into 4 burner/hrs of cooking time via natural gas per day. If we didnt buy the idiot/hassle proof commercial system, we could have done it for much cheaper

I have found that mowing will certainly impact the type of vegetation. Doing that work with a weed wacker really sounds like the hard way. I would only reserve weed wacking for areas where mowing will not work. Keep that chinese silver grass cut down and more useful grass and things will take its place. Chinese silver grass: It spreads along disturbed ground and natural areas and can create large patches. displacing native plants. The grass is also very flammable and increases the fire risks of invaded areas. Depending on the species, this invasive can spread via seeds and/or underground rhizomes.

The comfrey I got from you last year is absolutely gorgeous! I need to divide it because it’s gotten too big for the spots where I have it planted. This week it has started to bloom - so pretty and those huge deep green leaves! We don’t have silvergrass in NW Georgia that I know of but my property is rife with nutsedge. I am constantly pulling it out of my green beds but this has me thinking - can I make changes to the environment to create a spot nutsedge won’t grow? No clue but I’m going to looking into it.

I was going to ask the same thing In my PDC we were taught to find the nearest, healthiest forest that matches our local situation, and to use soil from several spots in that place to make an inoculation solution to spread in the area we want to restore the soil microbiome of. Sort of like making yogurt to restore digestive flora in your stomach, but for a forest.

I have a silly question. How are you avoiding the seeds from the silvergrass sprouting or it springing back from its roots once you chop and drop it here? Unless there are more steps i am missing, it seems like you are just making things more fertile for next year's silvergrass this way. Ps, be VERY thankfull silvergrass is what you have taking over at your place. I live in New England, and we are being taken over by ridiculous amounts of Japanese Knotweed, and that stuff is pretty much impossible to kill. It is so rugged ,If you tar over it, it comes back through and or around where you paved....The amount of manhours we put in to just keep it from taking over is ridiculous, and you have to be on it with a purpose, or it will take over in a season or 2. Cutting it back vigorously, and then sheetmulching it, is the only way to slow it down. The good news is it is edible and it shows promise as a medicine against Lyme's disease , so we may be forced into some sort of "if you cant beat them , join them" sort of compromise.

@@fresnokidsr It absolutely does help to treat Lyme, but Knotweed-based tinctures are inexpensive. Most people just want it gone! Hurricane Irene (2011) brought it to the NE in droves. Farmers have fought it's growth since.

Hey Billy, I have a question on pasture management. We just got a soil test on our 4 acres and our pH is 5.7. They recommended 3 ton of lime per acre and also NPK fertilizer (which we are not planning on using, just keep rotating the 8 sheep). Do you recommend the lime or is there a 'permaculture' way of balancing the pH? We have quite a few species growing, I have ID'ed clover, poison ivy (have to be careful walking through it!), blackberry, dandelion, buttercups and a few different grasses.
