There's a line in the movie... where Fassbender's character explains the entire wardrobe ( +hat ) choice. It was to look like a German tourist. The logic behind it... the assassin wants to be incognito, and no one wants to start up a conversation with a German Tourist.

Excellent movie. Incredible sound design. Witty, terse, aphoristic writing. A robotic Fassbender reminds one of the Terminator. What is a terminator but a killer by another name? He’s also a psychopath. I think Fincher wants us to take sadistic pleasure in the murders. I especially enjoyed the murders of the New Orleans-based contractor and his secretary. (I wonder if his movies constitute a kind of sublimation of Fincher’s dark, S & M fantasies.).Reminds me a little of Man Bites Dog, the outlandish Belgian serial killer of the 1990s.

its amazing that a lot of people did not get the film. the ones who hate it - like whats going on? why? the ones who loved it instantly - think its realistic movie about a killer. The movie was literally a joke. Main character with all the serioussness in the world saying in his mind one thing - and not doing the opossite, complete dissonance from words and actions. But that all shown with a point. almost biblical moral about ego and belief. Even the hats are funny. Music right in the ears, running from a dog and saving the final "villian". Its a great film that misunderstood as much as The Road Not Taken poem by Frost. Which is also a joke, btw. literally.

Jennifer Saunders on the bucket hat: "Oasis". She's spot on. Liam Gallagher was one of the main references for the style of "The Killer". Costume Designer Cate Adams: "He’s always wearing bucket hats and oversized windbreakers. It’s, like, ‘Are you kidding?’ You can look at him through the decades and he’s aways wearing something similar. I love his look. I mean, he was playing Glastonbury and I don’t even think it was raining but he was wearing this, like, ginormous, oversized windbreaker. And I was, like, ‘What is going on? Aren’t you sweating to death?’ But maybe that’s his schtick, you know. He’s trying to burn calories. He doesn’t give a f**k, right? Isn’t that Liam? That’s The Killer. There’s nothing in there. He doesn’t care. He couldn’t really care less about what anyone thinks of him. He doesn’t really need anyone to survive. It’s just him."

Ha, ha. You got it. "People are perverts". But there's an inversion, here. Those were regular kitchen gloves used for a sexual purpose. The idea of using them came from Brad Pitt. Interesting film, unique, not quite the satirical comedy it's purported as in some circles or a grounded romp mainstream audiences can necessarily digest, though it definitely has a streak of humour. A film and a movie, as Del Toro put it. Very subversive in how the protagonist is so unsympathetic in a role that might usually be attractive or redeemable in some way, he's just a semi-lapsed killer making the best of a bad situation with the shitty unromanticized inner monologue this type of person might actually need to survive or thrive - one full of lies and contradictions that we the viewers can't trust. Possibly jarring for some audiences in the age of John Wick and it's derivatives. It's a lean procedural look at a day in the life of a real piece of shit and unsurprisingly, things don't always go as planned, it's inhuman and tedious. Also it looks fantastic and the pacing is super lean.

Not a bad film, my only issue was how the so-called assassin stood so close to that large, bare window in the beginning, exposing himself for all to see from the adjacent buildings, even, at one point, with a friggn' scope in his hands, and for him to take so damned long for that shot at such a short distance, was stupid.
