Yes ... his epilogue shows his gratitude for all he was able to experience. He earned it all through his work, yet he focused not on what was due to him because of the responsibilities he fulfill but on the great position and the good boss he had. .He comes across as both grateful and graceful.

Hello Shauna - I loved this book - I’m so sad we are at the end - I felt like I was the one leaving ‘Royal Service’ in that last chapter :) King Charles does seem like a really nice man - I hope he has many more years on the throne - he deserves it! The Little Princesses sounds like a great choice when you’re ready to start up again.

I wish , it went on and on!! I will enjoy anything you love. So long you do not stop, it is so much fun. Thanks. These books have brought to life a Charles that l did not know. It actually made me appreciate him more, his caractère and his qualities, and it brought to me a Diana, that l though l knew, but realise was so different, from the princess that all adored. The ending is so sad. It must be hard to be a royal, because you can not be friend even that you like peoples you are really alone in a sort of bubble. This is why eventually everybody end up escaping and you are left alone. Thank God for Camilla .She never left him down even that he did.

It's a shame Stephen felt the need to leave the then Prince Charles's service - the way it's written leads me to believe that he may have been "pushed" out a bit by Di. Possibly she felt that his raised eyebrow was more than just cheeky even tho he was trying to help her in understanding the then PoW personality a bit more as we all now know how different they truly were. Looking forward to "The Little Princesses"!

Thank you Shauna! A couldn't help but think as the book was nearing its end, how kind and respectful King Charles was to Stephen Barry. Charles saw the man first and the servant second. King Charles has always been the same with people from all walks of life. A very humble man.The unfortunate part is, the world canonized Diana and with Charles, he became the villain. He has always kept a dignified silence and people today still see him as the villain. Shauna until you began reading to us the great autobiographies on Charles and Diana, I was the same. Charles has always kept a dignified silence and has allowed the world to keep their fairy tale on how beautiful and saintly Princess Diana was. No doubt she was a remarkable, kind and beautiful young lady. She instinctively knew the needy and the marginalized was where she could with kindness and warmth support them in their lives. Harry didn't inherit Charles and Diana's genes of respect, kindness and consideration for others. He walks the walks, talks the talk however it is all about himself and what he can get out of all the charities he supports.

Such a lovely portrait of the relationship between Charles and his valet. Times moved on and Stephen obviously had the wit to know when it was time he moved on as well. Imagine all the other glorious books or other gifts he could have gone on to share with the world. Sad times in the 1980's I'm sure Charles would have shed a tear at Stephen's untimely death.

That book was so enjoyable. Prince Charles must’ve missed him so much. He’d been with him practically all his adult life at this stage. I think Diana was jealous of their closeness which is understandable especially as she was so young. I wonder where Stephen Barry went after that? It was so sad that he died so young. @@jackiejones690 We will never know that though I suspect you are right, so it was good they both realised this was the right decision. Reading history books it seems that often close personal servants caused friction on marriage in royal households. Not surprising when you consider the close relationship and often long association between a man and his valet or a woman and her ladies maid.

Lovely story about working for the king sounds like it was very happy times. The only thing I don't like about the royals is hunting on horse back I love the clothes they wear but not the sport looking forward to your next book after your well deserved rest from reading I really love you reading thank you so much 💐💐💐💐

You need to read Lady Colin Campbell’s book, The Real Diana. In it, she says that Diana was scared of horses, but wanted to try to learn to ride to please Charles. She went to James Hewitt for riding lessons. Hmmmm. The rest is history.

@@thevintageread I am halfway through it. It has really opened my eyes to who Diana actually was.
