Altengrad - one of those series where I just hit the thumbs up before even starting the video.

One strategy I found for making outlying towns and villages easily is by starting with the roads going out of town. Look at where the city streets converge onto roads, and then build those roads through the lowlands to the edge of the map. Wherever it seems natural, add routes that connect these roads into the city to one another, perhaps bypassing the city entirely. These country roads (and railroads) should diverge as you get farther from the city. Then start building your towns. Large towns are usually found at important crossroads, and should get bigger as you get closer to the city. You only need about four or five of them on an entire map to get the point across. If you find making towns to be boring, try making them distinct. One could have an old castle or medieval manor. Another could be a railway depot or a minor port. To fill the gaps between the important towns, add villages and hamlets. Don't waste too much time on these. They can be as simple as a few buildings along a road, with a single shop and a small inn. You can use villages for your remaining minor crossroads, or simply have them connected to the road by rural lanes. You might need a lot of them depending on the amount of habitable land, but they should only take about a minute or so to make each. In my personal opinion, its really important that you don't skip the step of adding towns and villages to the city. The place where the city fades into the countryside can be the most interesting, and as people begin to rely on cars in the later 20th century they will play a major role in urban development. Towns close to the city get absorbed into the urban fabric, while towns outside of the city become minor highway exits on the way into the capital. Its always interesting seeing buildings in a suburban area that used to belong to an independent community.

If you want to fill in the outskirts fast release a map with different regions and make a community event out of it. You can import different larger structures via Move it! from other maps. Maybe take some inspriation from 2$20, he did this previously

One problem i have with Cities Skylines and all city building games in general is that they dont feel like cities. They are just grids and random buildings on them, they dont look real, they look like a game. Meanwhile here what you have done is creating a real living city that looks and feels like one. You are doing a great job! Keep on going no matter what

Altengrad is imo one of the highest quality c:s projects by far, the amount of thought put into it really makes it easy to do worldbuilding. I remember some guy even planned on making a story set in Altengrad lmao. Really hope the series continues!

Well... Altengrad in real life could have... approximately ... 200/300 tousand inchabitants before war? 🤔 those times, buildings were densely occupied...🤔 for me, theory that Altengrad is a capital city, could work ;)

Every time I see a new upload I drop everything, close the curtains, switch off the lights so it's completely dark, and start watching it like a movie cause I love this series. I love Altengrad, I love Aurelia. I just love cities and everything you can do with them. You've now made almost 40 Altengrad episodes and over 80 Aurelia episodes and still you manage to come up with original ideas which are super interesting and keep me hyped for the upcoming videos. I really love seeing the two completely different cities grow. You are doing a great job and you have a lot of creativity and positivity. Keep up the good vibes, and thank you :)

The amount of time and effort put into this city, only to cover like 1/10th of the map really puts into perspective how massive cities skylines maps really are.

Will Altengrad have an airport? The 30s would be a perfect time to start with a really basic one, but if not, the 40s are ideal too - think a military airbase built during the war and then converted into a civilian airport right after the war ends… In any case, loving this series, keep it up! 👍🏻

@@Akruas oh, I’m sorry to hear that. The one you built for Aurelia was fantastic so I was looking forward to seeing how you’d do a more retro-style one. Regardless though, this series is super good…as others have commented, you’ve done a fantastic job of creating a city that genuinely looks REAL! It’s super impressive and I’m really looking forward to the next episode 🙂

Love this series. For the parks: could you try some different trees? The should be tall at the top (for shade) and open at the bottom (for looking at people). The pine trees you sometimes use have the exact effect. It helps to imagine this from an eye-level perspective. Also: people like to sit next to fountains, so some fountains would be nice. The business and industrial areas can use more seating areas for workers enjoying their lunch outside.
@molybdane72403 жыл бұрын
Looks it all adds up nicely. If you make more villages in the future, make sure you add vegetable gardens to each house. That way, you can tripple or quadruple the space each little house takes up.

If Altengrad is in a country like Germany or Switzerland with a federal structure, it might be the capital of one of the federal states, hosting its parliament. Some of the state capitals in Germany are not very big cities. (E.g. Schwerin has just 95k inhabitants, which is likely less than what Altengrad will grow to.) (This is just as an argument why there might be a parliament in a more modern part of the city. If you go more back into history, you of course have even smaller states with their own capitals, but that would then have the parliament more in an older part of the city. Of course you could also go to very small countries like Liechtenstein (Vaduz has ~ 6k inhabitants).)

You need some bigger industrial parks, just only with a coal plant and some car/engine factory you could create a zone who could created jobs for a lt of people. PD: You need some slums/old semi abandoned houses who looks like the first place a family who have just come to the city from the countryside will live on. That will add historical realistic in a Europea city in the industrial era.
@alexandrutonita7363 жыл бұрын
It could be like Versailles (to Paris), den Haag (to Amsterdam) or Weimar (to Berlin). Close to the biggest and most important city in the nation, but a separate capital for prestige or some strategic reason. It could also be like Washington DC (NY and LA), Brussel (Paris and Berlin) or Canberra (Sidney and Melbourne). Although not important, it is the capital because choosing one of the two major cities would anger the population of the other region.
