My sixth form did this - I think it was because the male cubicles didn't have bins for sanitary products (which in general isn't a good practice as what about men with incontinence pads or nappies, trans men with menstrual products, etc), absolutely awful for everyone and decreasing capacity significantly. In school environments I think this effect is worsened because if all one gender's toilets are taken up people will be less comfortable going to the other side even though it's the same and just a cubicle, in a workplace or public place there's going to be less stigma and potentially less mocking so people will just make use of the other cubicles in a design like this. No reason for it though, just dumb.

So I have one problem with two of the things you propose: Piss stinks. That means, you will need more separation between the actual toilets and the entry, because you don't want the stench outside. Putting a room with the sinks first and after that the toilets should work. I'm also not a fan of the trough, because unlike a urinal, the piss hangs around much longer making it a lot smellier.
@killingtimeitself2 жыл бұрын
you could get around that by providing a negative pressure zone in the bathroom, causing a natrual flow of air from the outside to the inside, isolating airflow, also for the piss troughs, you would want to design it such that it isnt a literal trough, more so a slanted basin that leads into a small maybe half inch gap at the very bottom into a collection pipe, this will help with smell substantially. Though you could just add some form of washing system but thats fairly convoluted and lets be realistc here.

It mostly stink when it's allowed to hang around for long. And nothing makes it hang around more than if you miss the urinal completely. A big advantage of the trough design is that it's impossible to miss it as long as you stand close enough (that requires regular cleaning so that you are not tempted to stand further back; but that is true of all public toilets). All urinals require automatic flushing to prevent smell; so this design requires a bit more water; but it's easily scalable to fit different traffic, so it's not as big a problem. Also it's just as easy to use for tall people as for children; while separate urinals are usually optimal for only one height, and impossible for most children.

I work at a place with separate bathrooms, I don't want people to bone in the communal bathroom, your prototype needs a deterrent. I suggest the Fairchild Republic A-10 Thunderbolt II, an American single-seat, twin-engine, straight-wing jet aircraft developed by Fairchild-Republic in the early 1970s. It is the only United States Air Force aircraft designed solely for close air support of ground forces, which will come in handy when obliterating any couple entering the stall together. The A-10 was built to attack tanks, armored vehicles, and other ground targets with limited air defenses so there will be no worries about the ammunition being ineffective due to the stall being indoors. Equiped with the GAU-8 Avenger, a rotary cannon that is the airplane's primary armament and the heaviest such cannon mounted on an aircraft it would have sufficient firepower and precision to slay any transgressor of the no boneing rule. With all this in mind I'd ask for a phone with a hotline to the Warthog be installed and funds put aside for ammunition fuel and roughly 3 A-10s for maximum coverage in terms of shift rotation and redundancy so a craft can circle the bathroom at all times.

I have often gone down a Wikipedia rabbit hole of toilet designs. Inventors have tried to make female urinals but they never really worked out well enough. I think one potential flaw with this is that during peak toilet times, women would end up sharing their limited cubicle capacity with men who decide to use cubicles in the absence of any free urinals, it may well cause women to have to wait even longer for toilets. Perhaps some sort of mathematical model based on toileting behaviour data to test it out is in order.

It got so bad that individual stalls were regendered so females could have clean seats. Also in many jurisdictions they have laws that dictate the number of male and female toilets depending on the building occupancy. So the gender neutral toilets need to be built in addition to traditional toilets, which is less efficient. That said, great video. This is definitely the future once we get past the growing pains.

I'm a design student and I actually love this idea! Some really good points from your part. My school has unisex toilets (and probably had them for ages), mainly because there aren't enough restrooms there. There are only two restrooms at each floor, and since it's a pretty big building, they are probably like a hundred meters apart, which would be just too far for whichever sex is unlucky enough to have them further from their classroom. Plus, we're an art school, so we often work with paint and other materials, so having a source of water nearby (for washing hands, brushes, tools or whatever else) is important (and apart from the restrooms, there are no sinks). Lastly, many people are gender fluid these days, especially at a school like ours, so it's just so much easier and more efficient to have unisex toilets. Cubicles offer enough privacy. There are virtually no urinals at our school (there is one in some of the restrooms, but nobody really uses them), they are not necessary, especially given that over 3/4 of people in the building are female. You made a great point about women having to wait in lines at busy places (and as we all know, they often go to men's toilets if they are in a hurry), and I like your solution too. Maybe apart from the Yellow Shower :D But separating the urinals like that is great. So is making the toilets unisex and removing the door (goodbye me having to press the door handle with my elbow, with a finger through a sleeve or kicking the door open). If I ever get to designing interiors (which I hope I will), some of your ideas will surely come in handy!

hey I've noticed too that many people at art schools are those gender conscious people, why do you think that is? i went to an elite school and there were zero, absolutely zero trans people in the whole school. my sister in art school has two in her class. lower grades? more autists? do you have any idea?

Humanity has solved the unification of electromagnetic and weak forces, yet is still troubled with the toilet unification. Such a shame that those pesky elitist scientists bother with grand unification while they could have resolved this odious toilet trouble. (All jokes aside, I have been laughing at the title for the past 10 minutes)
@24kingofcards2 жыл бұрын
One thing to consider is that there are multiple designs of toilets: specifically, trough toilets. Trough toilets would negate the need to distinguish urinals and other toilets, resulting in higher space efficiency, and no need for a golden urinal ratio. Also an added bonus is that they function as 'a urinal that works for women too'. However, for perfect space efficiency, a trough toilet would take the shape of a large hypercube, wherin each vertex is a drain and every face is a depositing receptical. Water is sprayed on each face from their adjacent dimension, meaning this toilet would also serve in multiple planes of existence, thereby increasing possible contact points.

On a serious note adding to the inclusivity bit you mentioned about having a wide open entrance so mobility-challenged individuals can enter freely, a unified toilet also means that people who are finding it hard to pick which bathroom to use ordinarily (male or female) don’t need to worry. Best of all, even if they identify as female, they can still use the urinals for maximum efficiency.

@@literallyvergil1686 Trans people exist! I'm sure you're aware of that, though. If I had to guess, you probably think male would be the "obvious" choice for me, but the last time I used the men's room, someone walked in on me washing my hands, took one look at me, checked the sign outside the door, and left. I use the women's room because I'm a woman and it doesn't make people uncomfortable. Unisex bathrooms are always a relief because I don't have to play the games of "do my tits give away that I'm a woman or does my face look weird?" and "am I brave enough to go into a gendered bathroom today?" I'm never comfortable in any public bathroom, really. Unisex ones are a lot better, but I always feel vulnerable and exposed and all I want to do is go number 1 or number 2 and get the hell out without being harassed by strangers.

I found this video even more convincing after seeing the toilets at one of the high schools near me. There is no door, on the left, an entire row of sinks, and on the right, an entire row of stalls, each with a locking door. This way, there is complete privacy, and you wash your hands after touching the door. The last thing it needs is a bunch of urinals at the end and it will be perfect.

The door is pretty important for ventilation. Also, have you ever been on a camping ground with doorless toilets? You can smell them from 10m away, and that is in open space. The piss-trough is a great invention, it serves as a 2nd option sink for drunks, generating entertainment for others. One thing that is different for our US friends is, that public toilet stalls often have gaps in the doors sides, giving a nice view inside while walking past. Officially, to disincentivize drug abuse.
@killingtimeitself2 жыл бұрын
the ventilation in theory should be fairly easy, if you have a natural airflow from outside the bathroom to inside the bathroom it should function similarly to a door, as well as properly ventilate the bathrooms to begin with.
@MetaBloxer2 жыл бұрын
For the ventilation issue, the 2-way push door mentioned would probably be preferable. I would advise a transparent door, though, so you can see someone coming and so there's still an openness about it. It should also be double doors, so there isn't that awkward situation of a person on either side trying to get in. They can just follow driving rules and enter their respective door.

You need to calculate the ratio of unusably dirty cubicles to total cubicles. Motorway service stations and pubs have more extreme ratios than some other places.

I've had an anger the past few months this video has soothed. My workplace recently redecorated the bathrooms and decided to completely remove the urinals in the men's so now we have just three cubicles. The idea was to make them more inclusive but all it's done is increases the time it takes to use them. I'm all for equality and inclusion but not when that means my experience is worsened. They could have easily had two cubicles and a urinal trough but for some reason elected not to and it's been a real peeve of mine, thank you!

additionally, and idea I have seen suggested: bringing back the old-timey role of restroom waiter, or whatever that work was called. This adds an employee with a degree of authority to kick out people or call secutiry in case someone misbehaves unsanitarily or making others uncomfortable of course they could also fulfill roles such as handing over toilet paper in the dire event that it runs out, along with other items (for price maybe) such as napkins, makeup removers, diapers, deodorants and simple colognes, and good old towels; ensuring toilets are flushed and taps shut, and maybe even keep a basic first aid kit, because when people get small injuries such as paper cuts they often head to the restroom
