I think it would only need roughness maps everywhere due to how modern lighting is handled, if theres no layer to tell the engine how reflective things should be it all looks like flat plastic... Compare that to the original way Source handles lighting, you can get away with just literal images cause the reflectivity of the material is calculated by pixel when you import it to the engine, and i'm talking about lighting only, not reflections, for the reflections you need a specular map, basically what roughness map is to engines these days

Thank you for featuring our project, Philip! Honestly didn't even get far enough in the game with RTX to see that building collapse section, so it's awesome that you found that. You mention stealth in the game not effected by the lighting, but we're hoping to change that in the future. Dark Messiah is all about adapting, so we will want to have the stealth mechanic be more closely linked to RTX's lighting, allowing players to solve some problems in their own way. Though, this does take some reverse engineering to program in, so that'd be further down the line. Still need to figure out how the color correction filtering back in, and reimplement the Dark Vision spell! To address something here, I see a lot of comments / feedback, and as negative or rude as some may be, seeing what people have issues with is exactly what we're looking for, because we've been building this for Dark Messiah community as a whole, old or new. This entire work is being done by a single guy, and iterations come based on priority, so this helps us see what works and what doesn't. Some of the assets in this video are a little outdated, but people mention some great criticism on POM usage and especially detail usage, so we'll be doing another pass on those textures to make sure we've satisfied that. We have another video cooking up with the updated assets including some character designs, so here's hoping we're taking steps forward and see some improvement. That being said, we often poll the Dark Messiah community for feedback, so if you want to be involved in the process, speak up! We are here because we love the game first, so let's share some love!

Can't say I like some of the parallax occlusion mapping (POM) being done with the Dark Messiah remix: the technique tends to fall apart when you push it too hard. See the wood on the buildings at 5:13? How the edges look all streaked and uneven? That's what I'm talking about. POM works by basically building a surface out of slices based off a height map. At close range, and at oblique angles, it's really easy to break the illusion, especially if the number of slices isn't very high or the height map has some very sharp changes in height like the wood. Stick to using it on either smooth changes in depth or shallower details.

while i think some of the tool is cool (i hate the AI stuff but whatever) i feel like, aside from being a cool tool, it isnt that good, or atleast wasnt shown to be. i feel like so many "graphical updates" to old games just try to slap newer techniques on it and try to make it look "right" and "realistic" but end up having things look very bad and unintentional. especially in more finely crafted experiances, lighting and texture choices are often stylistic design choices and not just engine limitations (even if they stem from engine limitations, there are still ways to do things very intentionally within a limitation) that a lot of mods ive seen just straight up miss maybe if you dont like the original style its fine (plenty of old games had a very brown look for some reason) or if the modder puts in a ton of work to stay faithful to the original vision it can still work, but just giving a game "better textures" and "better models" and "rtx lighting" does not make it a better looking game at all quite a few of the examples just made me say "this looks significantly worse", no offense to the modders but it just seems misguided

I'm a huge fan of ray tracing, light is inherently fascinating to me and I love playing with optics in real life but jesus fucking christ these assets are horrible. The effort needed to make matching roughness / normal / metalness maps to the textures while also keeping the original look and intent of the game is how it should be done. Ray traced lighting adds a nice sense of presence for all of the objects and rarerly clash with the original artistic vision of the work since they're using techniques to approximate what light *would* look like. These textures take away from this. I personally believe the path traced half life mod is *nearly* a gold standard here (they loved volumetrics a bit too much and it was very distracting when used) and it should be a guide when adding ray tracing to these old games.

As someone who has been working with ray-tracing since 2011 in my opinion this is one of the worst showcases for the technology I have ever seen. Parallax mapping I almost never use but the values seem way too high in this example and they are full of aliasing, artifacts and banding issues. The lighting has terrible tone mapping/gamma correction and there is just something wrong with the indirect lighting and ambient lighting that I can't quite pin down but it overall just looks too dark in the shadows. Not to mention all the textures have a overly sharpened and filtered look to them and don't get me started on the "ai stuff". It doesn't help that all of the examples even in their original form had a for lack of a better phrase "burnt" look to them, even at the time of release I remember people complaining about the "lighting" in all these games to an extent that they thought there was something wrong with their tv or graphics settings. Interested to see how RTX Remix continues to evolve and what the communities do with it. We had a discussion at the office yesterday about how some of us believe someone experiencing Portal for the first time should play the original as opposed to the RTX version, curious to hear your thoughts Philip.
@bradysullivan71203 ай бұрын
Personally as someone who hadn't played the OG and had simply heard of it I actually played the RTX version first. I don't actually think it matters which one you experience first because the writing and puzzles are the games main draw, neither of which are really affected by the pretty lighting. So if you're someone with a good PC who's brain goes "Unga Bunga" at pretty colored lighting then I'd recommend RTX over the OG simply because the "soul" of the game remains the same and you get your pretty lighting. And if you'd rather have a more performant experience(either out of desire or necessity) then you can just play the OG, Its not like the RTX version made any improvements to the puzzles or dialogues.
@johnclark9263 ай бұрын
I’d say that for a first time player, it’s important to at least get a taste of what the original game looks like before deciding whether to stick with the RTX version. First time players should be informed about the pros and cons, especially for Portal where the RTX version disables the shader effects that are important for the look and feel of the portals.

@@bradysullivan7120 the "soul" is everything, graphics too because it's literally the intended look of the game
@Blaze61083 ай бұрын
@@bradysullivan7120 Well, Portal is a case where you can easily make the argument that the RTX version is similar enough (it's Valve-approved after all) that it's a pretty good representation of how the game is mean to be in the first place. For something like Black Mesa and HL1, for example, you have to make a deliberate choice over whether you want the shinier, less faithful experience or the original. However I think it's also pretty fair to say that it's still better to play the original version of the game at least once in any case, to see what it was like originally, as it's nigh-inevitable for some things to get 'lost in translation' (one that was pretty notorious for example were the bright orange indicator lights emitted by sphere catchers in Portal 1, which were absent in the RTX version and even make a gameplay difference).
@slyseal20913 ай бұрын
Portal isn't really the right choice for this question, because it's stylised in a fashion that specifically distances it from reality. It's also not really from the era of games where devs had to "downsize" the mental image of their game for the available technology, i.e. Deus Ex doesn't actually take place in a universe where humans are limbless blocks of concrete. Raytracing wouldn't objectively improve tf2's art style either, to offer an obvious comparison. I think this question is far more meaningful for the HL2 remix, since except for the alien tech everything is just an attempt at emulating real environments/objects/people.

To be brutally honest while I find this incredibly impressive from a technical standpoint I think in actuality it looks like crap, it kinda ruins the look of the games because it robs it of all the charm of how the art-style was originally crafted specifically to fit the graphics they were working with at the time, a much more subtle approach that only aims to slightly improve things here and there without messing with the original look would probably be a lot better. A game that wasn't designed for dynamic lighting won't always look good with it, in fact it usually won't. The only exception to this being the Bloodlines example since it seems like the intent there was indeed just to polish rather than doing drastic changes simply because it's possible now.

How is altering and destroying the original art preserving anything?

It should have been an easy victory yet they failed.

Another person who loves Dark Messiah! I did not expect this. That game was an underrated gem.

Frankly, Im getting the vibes of fanmade "remasters" of old games circa xbox 360 era that would just SLATHER everything in bloom and HDR and just lead to an eyesore from the Dark Messiah project. I dont wanna hate on a fan project, but it seems to me their aims are quite misguided with the "enhanced" textures completely changing the original games stylistic choices. Not to mention the high definition textures looking out of place on the simplistic low poly environments. The version with just the RTX looks miles better. That said, it's still cool tech, but I think great care will have to go into using it to get passable results. I think the Stalker games would be excellent candidates for this!

I love the progress with RTX Remix. Not only does it show off modern rendering tech (and serves a little bit as an ad for Nvidia), but it also encourages fans to bring older games to a new audience who otherwise would've never looked at it. My personal favorite so far would be GTA San Andreas. Not only was there a huge HD texture effort anyway, but it also would show nicely how a true "definitive edition" would look like

The new assets look kind of weird and nobbly in Dark Messiah.

Personally I love the original textures in many of these games with material upgrades. Many of the texture upgrades look out of place. The upgraded lighting and materials is all I want as it makes the games look great. Making the textures higher res without making it look too detailed or too much is a difficult balance to achieve

Shame emulation can't take advantage of this i'm hoping it can in the future the amount of awesome PS2 titles that can be remastered with this would be amazing!

sadly for now all we can do is literally port those old games to pc somehow, like that one dev who ported Majora's mask to pc to run natively

it'd be beautiful to replace the lighting in old games and have PBR textures. I've emulated the 3DS and PSP monster hunters with upscaled textures and they'd look so good with RTX remix.
@narutrixil3 ай бұрын
Why can't emulators take advantage of this? Its not uncommon seeing shader mods for emulated games.

An rtx remix of Shadow of the Colossus would go extremely hard
@Deliveredmean423 ай бұрын
@@narutrixil And that's the thing, RTX Remix cannot use newer APIs, and most emulators runs on DirectX 11, 12 and Vulkan nowadays. There is a reason why they had to make a cursom commands to run Dark Messiah to run on DX7 and not DX9.

POM (Parallax Occlusion Mapping) has been a big thing in the Skyrim SE modding scene as well. It does a HUGE amount towards making older games look brand new when options like Nanite are unnattainable. Even more impressive, Skyrim modders figured this out without any help from NVidia or AMD. ENB supported the feature first and then Community Shaders created support for it as well. Really great examples can be found in the mod "Skyland Complex Materials". It doesn't have any PBR to it as that hasn't been finalized yet but the Community Shaders developers are working almost daily on it, and there are PBR assets for Skyrim on their discord (all WIP but extremely promising nonetheless). It's certainly the next step for amazing visuals in a 3/8/13 year old game. Great to see NVidia bringing all of this tech to games that don't have such dedicated communities as Skyrim for free. Probably one of the coolest things they have done.

@johnderat26523 ай бұрын
For a game like Dark Messiah of Might and Magic baked lighting can't solve everything. One of the main aspects of the game is how interactive it is, how the environment can shift. Real-time lighting solutions can solve this

Seeing THIS is shocking and I am both scared by how easy it seems and nerdgasming over the potential for ALL THE PERFECT GAMES... until some crazy visual trick comes out that demands a 24 core cpu and 3 rtx 4090s with 256gb ddr5 ram. IF you want a good example of a ray tracing mod, check out the one for Doom. It's actually very well done. Vampire mod also seems like it has potential. You just need modders who absolutely love these old games to do the mods, not script kiddies slapping on some tool and saying "EnHancEd"

@@thesyndrome43 yep, it's like it was made for it. Currently rtx remix does hook but there's some issues which prevent it from being useable. But as it gets better and better it may just be possible yet
@roadent2172 ай бұрын
The first two Thief games should work simply because Garrett's visibility was dependent upon his direct line-of-sight to the light source. As long as the lights aren't too bright, and there's a strong contrast between dark and light areas without much light bouncing off of surfaces, it should be possible to keep the lighting faithful to the original.
@jayceneal52732 ай бұрын
@@roadent217 yep. I've seen people suggest it's not possible due to global illumination but with enough tweaking it definitely could work. Also, hidden in the developer settings you can actually disable global illumination bounces altogether, which would also improve performance while being 1:1 with the rasterized lighting
