THE GRANDMASTER is available now on Digital, Blu-ray Disc and DVD.
Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Wong Kar Wai, THE GRANDMASTER is an epic action feature inspired by the life and times of the legendary Kung FU master, Ip Man who mentored Bruce Lee. The story spans the tumultuous Republican era that followed the fall of China’s last dynasty, a time of chaos, division and war that was also the golden age of Chinese martial arts. Filmed in a range of stunning locations that include the snow-swept landscapes of Northeast China and the subtropical South, THE GRANDMASTER features virtuoso performances by some of the greatest stars of contemporary Asian cinema, including Tony Leung and Ziyi Zhang.
Written and Directed by Wong Kar Wai. Starring Ziyi Zhang, Tony Leung Chiu Wai, Hye-kyo Song, Cung Le, Chen Chang and Woo-Ping Yuen.

Man o man I just can't believe all the negative about Ip Man and martial artist's in general! I am 60 and have been in martial arts since I was 8 and respect is something that Ip Man earned as did Bruce Lee and many other martial arts greats. Just as great musicians, there are many that never make the so called big time, but are incredible just the same. To insult Ip Man for a novice is really easy being they have never had a real fight in their life. I would have loved to see the result of attacking him as he would destroy many martial arts greats before it even started! Bruce Lee did develop in his own right but his foundation was gained by a solid philosophy, without that he would have NEVER been the recognized martial artist that he was!

G I don't know where should we start maybe with all the BS that is pushed in all the Ip Man movies .... 99% is made up lie .... to make him look heroic.... Also, the fact that Bruce Lee was never his student to start with???? He was a student of his student .... meeting someone once or twice doesn't make you his student ... Just like I can't make a claim that I'm a student of my teacher's teacher...

There are pics of them together , by how young he looked b4 he was famous. I wasn't there. I can't say how what their relationship was like, but they obviously had one. Regardless if he was taught by him or not, it was customary for younger able students to teach, especially how old IP was. To say he wasn't overseeing the lessons and wasn't involved at all, what proof do u have exactly? As far as the movie it's a work of art. If u don't see it that way and by your statement it sounds like you've personally been wronged quite frankly is ludicrous. You weren't there. You just weren't. It's that simple

TaiChor5Gates remember that these are movies, not documentaries, and there are creative liberties taken by the director and his team. The film is an artistic view on the philosophy and value of being a Grandmaster, as well as a nostalgic mystification of the martial arts masters. It’s taken from Director Wong Kar Wai’s standpoint, peaking through the doors and windows as a child to catch a glimpse of something beyond his world. If that’s not what you want to see, there are several documentaries and articles on these Master’s real stories that you can spend your time on instead of complaining that this “bs” doesn’t compare to real life.

TaiChor5Gates First of all you’re full of BS Bruce Lee’s daughter said that he was trained by Ip Man until they found out he was part American. Then he was pressured not to train him but his students continue the training so where do you think he got his philosophy from and where do you think his training started at? It started from ip man.If Ip man meant nothing to him And it was all BS then why was he had his funeral paying respect to somebody he didn’t know. The fact is you don’t know the complete story just like I don’t but you act like you do. I can’t stand people to come on here and think they know everything were you there at that time. No do you know for a fact that a lot of what Bruce Lee new came from him no then please shut up

Learning from the best around is the best axiom. In a very small part it speaks of tradition... but it is more about transference. Virtually everything that you do with any excellence has a spiritual component to it.... and there is a transference taking place from teacher to student of a spiritual nature. This is only true when there is (sacrificial) obedience flowing out of great respect. The greatest gift is often who God has chosen to place before you, enabling you to exceed your own abilities. I learned wing chun from an Army sniper, who was a technician in nontraditional wing chung (ip man -> emin boztepe -> ... -> Army sniper/teacher -> me.) One day, after weeks of doing exactly what was taught me, I experienced something that I had never seen before in sparring. I was thinking totally on the offensive. Not a single moment was spent in a defensive mindset. EVERYTHING on the opponent was either a target or a potential target; a target that I could hit at my whim and will. This, I believe, came directly to me from my sniper/teacher. It came from EVERYTHING that made him uniquely him to that point. In the Army, he learned to prioritize the target: even above survival. In wing chun, he had learned that there are no defensive moves, as everything done defensively is, in effect, an offensive weapon. When that aspect downloaded to me in "transference", it was beyond cool. It was one of the coolest things that I've ever experienced, and it was totally beyond me. If God connects you with greatness, always treat it with respect. Even if you are the only person that can see the greatness, at that time. Now my teacher did not come to me as an empty vessel. He had "lined up" with what was taught him in sniper school: and something of a "targeting" mindset was given him. And he had lined up with Emin Boztepe's teaching. If you cannot honor and respect what or who is teaching you, you are greatly constraining your future abilities. There is no such thing as a "self made" man: you are being affected by who you hang out with and who you respect, either for the better or for the worse.

The actual IP man and life philosophies, all the elements in the movie. For me all i know is the movies is beautiful and the acting is fabulous. It is more Oscar worthy in many categories than many of the nominees over the years. So whether it is great because of authenticity, talent and the vision of the director can be discussed and debated if you like. Me i'm just going to enjoy it for many years to come.

Another time Yeung, aka (Bolo) went to see Bruce at Golden Harvest Studios. Bruce was screening a Cassius Clay (Muhammad Ali) documentary. Ali was world heavyweight champion at the time and Bruce saw him as the greatest fighter of them all. The documentary showed Ali in several of his fights. Bruce set up a wide full-length mirror to reflect Ali’s image from the screen. Bruce was looking into the mirror, moving along with Ali. Bruce’s right hand followed Ali’s right hand, Ali’s left foot followed Bruce’s left foot. Bruce was fighting in Ali’s shoes. “Everybody says I must fight Ali some day.” Bruce said, “I’m studying every move he makes. I’m getting to know how he thinks and moves.” Bruce knew he could never win a fight against Ali “Look at my hand,” he said. “That’s a little Chinese hand. He’d kill me.” RIP: The Greatest of All Time.

Ali was not as good a fighter as people think. But he was a good boxer. The difference is a fighter just goes at it, punching and being punched in return, like guys on the street. A boxer uses strategy and causes the other man to fight himself as much as fighting his opponent. Ali spent a lot of time just laying on the ropes letting his opponent waste energy. It’s how he beat Forman as well as others. A good example is his float like a butterfly sting like a bee quote. He would flit around until he saw his opponent getting worn down then strike. Not disrespecting him just stating the truth. Bruce on the other hand did it all and had devastating power for a man of any size/weight. And speed that was insane plus kicks. I simply get tired of hearing about how “great” Ali was when like I said he was good not great. To bad we will never know for certain since they are both no longer with us

I am close to a woman who was born in Shunde, China in the 50s. Moved to Foshan late 60s eventually married a man from Foshan, she still lives in Foshan with extended family. I thought our visits to the Ancestral Temple in Foshan were just respecting culture. I once approached a man post and as blokes do, hit it. I was laughed at by this woman. I stood aside, motioned mockingly for ma'a to try. Ma shook her head, waved the finger, scowled and said, "wu shu MO" (NO in Chinese). I was later that evening shown a very strong fighting stance, the hands slapped the air. I didn't see the leg swipe coming. I didn't hit the ground either.

onekdub - no, it is a mistake to believe his hype when it got him killed along with his son. A fool will believe anything. Bruce lee started out with a mixed martial arts called wing chun (shhhh he didn;t knwo it) and that is what he discovered. Again, people you are going to for the hype. This series Yip Man is Hollywood's continuation of Bruce's facade. If wing chun was as potent as you see in these Yip Man series, Bruce would have been all that he claimed. But wing chun is a female orientated style of self defense, and is easy countered. that is what Lee found out from a true martial artist that whupped on him. All these stories about him doing this and that is false. There is no footage of Lee in any real fight. If you see one you will see him getting his butt kicked. Otherwise, he lead people to think that he was undefeatable. Yeah right. He was the master of nothing! Oh! JKD which is a figment of his vain imagination that got him and his son smoked! That is a bad father!! Why would he have complained about his knowledge of he knew martial arts? All these people using the term don't mean they know it. They don't. Probably never ever really seen it. And Yip Man is the one that cursed him to the triads for bootleggin' wing chun a Jun Fan gung-fu. He was not the first to introduce chinese boxing to america. If that was the case Raymond chow brought kenpo over before Bruce even was heard of. Kenpo was taken out of shaolin 50 years after wing chun was, and one of Ed parkers brown belts beat lee before he gave the tournament exhibition. And the three inch punch of his was no more than a magician trick. (like doing push ups on to fingers and thimbs - there is nothing to that if you practice doing it, but foe what. Does that make your two fingers lethal? I think not. If it did why didn't anything he did save his life? If you hit anyone that is standing square, he will fall back if you lean into it once you make contact and push him with your weight. That is not how the strike is suppose to be done. but people who are practioners think they are martial artists, even Reeves can be called a movie martial artists for the work he did in the matrix but true martial artist laff at his performance As they did with Bruce Lee. But after Yip Man black balled him, no one could show him martial arts. he pushed the limit to the patience of the martail arts overseers at the time. And beleive it or not, years after his death, the godfather said he was wrong..oh well. the only reason he said it was wrong is beuz with martial arts, you learn it, you know it, you show it. Bruce did not know martial arts just becuz he kicked and punched

No, wrong. He was not a master, not even close! He was a sifu at best and only knew 2/3rds of the crappy modified version of wing chun, not the full and complete traditional. Masters William Cheung or Wong Shun Leung would have killed Bruce Lee! No, it doesn't work that way. JKD is a second-rate system because it has no forms, uses very little modified wing chun, and other, crappy, flawed, stiff and rigid systems like boxing, muay thai, karate and tkd. The ONLY reason he was able to get away with it because he had almost superhuman speed and power to overcome the flaws and stiffness, which doesn't appear in the complete traditional version.

This film got panned by critics because they thought they were watching a biopic about the man who trained Bruce Lee, it was more of a stylized interpretation of his life as well as being a love letter to martial arts philosophy. I definitely get what the director was going for, and its looks so incredibly sumptuous and beautifuly staged, shot, and produced. It's not a traditional or typical biopic. And critics hated it for that reason? So what! Critics don't know jack sometimes.
