Keanu Reeves calls this movie ‘The Real Deal’ - it’s a favourite of mine (especially the railway station scene) & I was gratified to see the amount of work that went into it… It’s a History lesson, as well as a brilliant study of Martial Arts - & there’s the not-quite-platonic relationship with Gong Ur, depicted in a respectful & tender way… I’m so glad to have this movie on DVD, & I’d recommend it to anyone, & not only fans of Martial Arts…it certainly opened doors for me & I now have quite a collection of movies, featuring all types of unarmed combat : they include some’ ‘spectaculars’, like ‘Hero’ - I buy them, simply because they ARE spectacular…beautifully designed & staged: but the intimacy of ‘Grand Master’ is something else! 🙏🏽💔🙏🏻

It's so crazy to think actors like Tony and Michelle yeoh just completed block buster action movies in their 60s. And this is on an entirely different level than western action. Like multiple times over more difficult. And that's not to say western actors don't put in work, but these actors literally walk away from finishing a film as a human weapon. They obviously focus on the scenes they need to shoot but fundamental martial arts are clearly much more instilled in Eastern action film stars. I wouldn't dare pick a fight with anyone from this cast baha

Leung and Zhang were both character actor/actress (emphasize on acting and micro-expressions), but they're not action actor/tress type. The movie seemed strange at first, because you could see the fights were heavily choreographed and full of fake exchanges of moves. Later on I realized it was a political drama of martial artists. The martial arts and fighting scenes, albeit beautifully choreographed, were only the side dishes. The main dish is the story line, and the acting, which those two delivered exceptionally. You won't get the explosive fighting energies as Donnie Yen's Yip Man, or Jet Lee's once upon a time in china. I'd say it's a different genre compared to those 2...... Oh, and Zhang was insanely gorgeous in this movie....

To all the MMA advocates, if you says martial arts doesn't work in a fight, then MMA doesn't work too. Because there are still rules in MMA matches. If you claim MMA to be "THE ONE WAY" to win any fights, try go fight someone real in any place, any situation and timing. No rules. Bites, eyes, groins, throats, anything goes. Maybe even weapons. If you can't, or don't dare to do it, then YOUR MMA is just another FAD in YOUR HANDS. That said, it's less about what STYLE you use, and more to do with how SKILLED and DEDICATED you are, and where you apply it to. MMA advocates who says the sole purpose is just to "take someone down" and win just makes me laugh. You should use a bat, a knife or a gun instead. You guys hide behind the reasoning that it's "practical" but yet, it's not really proven. Outside the ring. True, MMA in the hands of a real talent may be something. And don't forget, the "MA" in MMA stands for martial arts. You're not really that far outside the circle..

Bruce Lee didn't look down on traditional styles, he actually studied a lot them in detail. He didn't like the way those schools were conducted which were closed up and only practiced within the schools themselves. He hoped that various schools would interact with each other and learn from each other, as he did. In one of the Hollywood interviews he did, he demonstrated Hung Gar's Tiger and Crane style.
