Obviously I took a look at his illustrations on google and they are a real revelation. Not only technically great but highly distinctive and memorable. Sadly he was born to late to qualify for the unsung heroes series, but funnily enough I'm in the middle of a project which if I ever finish it will be a series on Italian illustration, and I had just found another Toppi called Giovi. Anyway Sergio is now added to those who will feature in that series and once more thanks loads for the knowledge.

The word genius come to mind. As you were going along I was thinking, some people are just born lucky, and then he's committing suicide at the end with two failed marriages in his past, so I suppose it all comes with it's own set of problems. His commercial work is really his art, the paintings were fairly drab and dull (at least the two shown), the work with purpose, the posters and set designs, are striking and full of ideas

Just superb. You simply don't see graphic design like this anymore. Man, what a time it must have been to be alive, when, after the horrors of the "War to End All Wars," the future seemed bright and boundless. Airbrush or atomizer? (The principle difference being that an airbrush uses a nebulizing needle to reduce the size of the droplets and reduce droplet size randomization.) The difference was not as pronounced in the beginning, but was surely pronunced by his time. Though looking at it, it may be that he did both, as some of his spray work appears very fine. I would imagine he favored atomization in his early work because it was cheaper and easier both to purchase and to maintain.

Hello and thanks a lot for the favourable comment. I'm faitly certain - although I haven't read it anywhere - that Futurism must have had a hand in Cassandre's approach to his posters. Now that's an interesting question. But sadly one we'll never know the answer to. My guess is that he was so wrapped up in himself and his depression by that time he probably wasn't even that aware of later designers. Although it has to be said that other than the odd exception - Milton Glaser springs to mind - design and illustration were rarely seen in the work of the same person by that point.

I’ve been rewatching Poirot on the BBC, with David Suchet starring. I think the credits must be an homage to A. M. Cassandra. Take a look, most of them are on KZbin; do you agree?

I didnt know Cassandre have such a dark stories on his life. His work trully is the i hold dear. I agree, after seeing some of his design, mostly after some of his failure, i can see the creativty decrease. But nevertheless, he is still my favourite, and many graphic design student should recognize him and how amazing his simple design can strike a communication through it. Sad ending, but he brought light to some people, including me

Hey Pete, can you think of a source that may provide the briefs to which AM Cass might have been given for these poster commissions? I'd like to read what these company's had in mind and create new posters myself. Thank you for your videos!
@petebeard
@petebeard 3 жыл бұрын
Hello and thanks for your appreciation. Unfortunately I don't know of anything that might shed light on the briefing process. I imagine it would have been very informal compared to equivalent work these days. Even in my own fairly recent experience commercial and industrual clients are a complete pain in the backside and expect you to be comprehensively informed about the whole history and company philosophy. With figures such as Cassandre I suspect he just drew what he felt like drawing and the client would be suitably grateful. How times have changed. But that's a great idea on your part and you should just do it.

Hi and thanks for your ongoing involvement and comments - much appreciated. Sounds like youre not much of a fan of art deco. Regarding Buell there are a couple of other slightly later guys (American of course) in the pipeline who pursued more expressive painterly technique so watch this space. No idea when they'll get their turn though.

@@petebeard Thanks and look forward to your videos. Art Deco, Art 'Decoration', don't understand* that style but perhaps any future presentation(s) of yours will shed some light on it. 🔦 * could be its too hoity-tioty for me. I'm used to eating from a trough at buffets, the price sticker 😱 shock alone at a fine resturant would put me under. Understood Erte's "girl in a swing" reference from the story of the Gilded Age architect Stanford White's fling with a chorus dancer. Other than that its the movie "Zardoz" but on the exterior of the dome. And no, not going to recommend the 'Gibson Girl' illustrator as the more I watch your well-made videos I realize how little I know. Not to mention the work you put into it. *Grateful* for the education.

Hello and no, I'm pretty certain it isn't. It all came from a non-copyright download called 'gypsy jazz' - a series of Django soundalikes on youtube played by people who are uncredited. I'd have preferred to use the real thing but copyright gets in the way of course.

That was quite amazing, i had studied a little of Cassandre's work in the early days but you furthered my education. Thank you for the inspiration. Also footnote on the depression side of the artist i felt that it was because of the avenues he used to express himself were becoming more constrictive and may be also due to no able to focus on what really drove him may have been the final reason. A truly tragic loss to the art & design community.

Hello and I'm not sure which picture you are referring to, but neither has a title as such. If it's the ships picture that's a poster for Lloyd Triestino created for the German market. The other science-fiction looking piece is completely uncredited as anything in particular but both can be found on a google images search.
