Thank you Pete, to say I look forward to every video you put out would be an understatement. I'm curious of what you think of --Sergio Toppi--?
@petebeard3 жыл бұрын
Hello and many thanks for your enthusiasm for the channel - it means a lot. Regarding Sergio Toppi I had never previously come across his work. So the first thing to say is thanks for the name. Obviously I took a look at his illustrations on google and they are a real revelation. Not only technically great but highly distinctive and memorable. Sadly he was born to late to qualify for the unsung heroes series, but funnily enough I'm in the middle of a project which if I ever finish it will be a series on Italian illustration, and I had just found another Toppi called Giovi. Anyway Sergio is now added to those who will feature in that series and once more thanks loads for the knowledge.

I learn so much from you. Your presentations are excellent. I wonder if you agree that A. M. Cassandre shows the influence of the Futurists in his dynamism?
@petebeard2 жыл бұрын
Hello and thanks a lot for the favourable comment. I'm faitly certain - although I haven't read it anywhere - that Futurism must have had a hand in Cassandre's approach to his posters. But there seems to be a whole cocktail of influences, including cubism and the eeriness of the early surrealists. But the Futurist connection is clear as day in his more energetic compositions and angular construction.

Airbrush or atomizer? (The principle difference being that an airbrush uses a nebulizing needle to reduce the size of the droplets and reduce droplet size randomization.) The difference was not as pronounced in the beginning, but was surely pronunced by his time. Though looking at it, it may be that he did both, as some of his spray work appears very fine. I would imagine he favored atomization in his early work because it was cheaper and easier both to purchase and to maintain.
@petebeard3 жыл бұрын
The sources say airbrush so that's what I went with. And others in France were using it too. But of course the actual posters were lithographic translations anyway.

Informative and concise as always. To spare me some aggravation in searching for an image, could anyone please tell me the title of the image on display at 0:47?
@petebeard3 жыл бұрын
Hello and I'm not sure which picture you are referring to, but neither has a title as such. If it's the ships picture that's a poster for Lloyd Triestino created for the German market. The other science-fiction looking piece is completely uncredited as anything in particular but both can be found on a google images search.
@naynaynay3243 жыл бұрын
@@petebeard Thanks for replying. I was refering to the blue/black/white coloured image with the gears in center, orbited by what might be planets or particles and some pentagonal would-be stars and 2 clouds somehow also there. Must be the uncredited one I s'pose.

Hey Pete, can you think of a source that may provide the briefs to which AM Cass might have been given for these poster commissions? I'd like to read what these company's had in mind and create new posters myself. Thank you for your videos!
@petebeard3 жыл бұрын
Hello and thanks for your appreciation. Unfortunately I don't know of anything that might shed light on the briefing process. I imagine it would have been very informal compared to equivalent work these days. Even in my own fairly recent experience commercial and industrual clients are a complete pain in the backside and expect you to be comprehensively informed about the whole history and company philosophy. With figures such as Cassandre I suspect he just drew what he felt like drawing and the client would be suitably grateful. How times have changed. But that's a great idea on your part and you should just do it.

I didnt know Cassandre have such a dark stories on his life. His work trully is the i hold dear. I agree, after seeing some of his design, mostly after some of his failure, i can see the creativty decrease. But nevertheless, he is still my favourite, and many graphic design student should recognize him and how amazing his simple design can strike a communication through it. Sad ending, but he brought light to some people, including me
@petebeard Жыл бұрын
Hello and yes it's sad that his life took a downward turn. But I agree he was one of the most important figures in 20th centry graphics and his influence can still be seen to this day. A genius, no less.

@@petebeard yes, even tho, some people especially graphic designer/student still doesnt know him, his work still will amaze me. I hope more people know him
@djw4573 жыл бұрын
The word genius come to mind. As you were going along I was thinking, some people are just born lucky, and then he's committing suicide at the end with two failed marriages in his past, so I suppose it all comes with it's own set of problems. His commercial work is really his art, the paintings were fairly drab and dull (at least the two shown), the work with purpose, the posters and set designs, are striking and full of ideas
@petebeard3 жыл бұрын
Hello again and I think it's tragic that he couldn't just settle for being easily one of the greatest graphic artists of all time. Unfortunately it seems to be a pattern with quite a few of those I've covered.
