Last summer, we got to spend one of the best weeks of our lives with our dear friend & mentor, Jim Kovaleski at his summer abode just outside Eastport, Maine.
Since last year's visit, we've been spending time compiling some fantastic footage into a one-of-a-kind educational experience! We officially launched our online course with Jim Kovaleski & can't wait to share all the excellent content with you!
Imagine a personal garden mentor that's available to you now & always in your own free time & comfort. You will be learning in a way that is natural & entertaining, by following this market farming master through a week in the profession & lifestyle as a market gardener. You will save money/time & even earn income with the advice & innovations you will find within the online video course.
Jim is known both in Maine & in Florida to be a very unique farmer. Through his winters in Florida, he is playing with the boundaries of rules by growing seasonal market vegetables in an ornamental presentation, making as beautiful front lawn curb appeal. But here in Maine, his method that stands out the most is the use of his freshly scythed (cut) grass in his garden beds.
This grass, or hay, has proven it's worth over & over each year for Jim. The proof this year was in spite of a drought, with no access to water - he was still able to produce an abundance of produce & he owes his prize-winning onions & other veggies to this grass-fed soil fertility. To learn more about Jim's methods:
www.thegrassfedmarketgarden.com
We have tons of free KZbin content as well with Jim if you are looking to learn more about his Maine & Florida Market Gardens. Here's our playlist with Jim - bit.ly/2rcEprC

I’m 23, I just want to grow food and build stuff. I don’t care about money or other materialistic things, I just want to be a productive blessing to God and His servants. Currently working on a farm for a living, my big goal is to have a wife and children on a self-sufficient farm living a wholesome and simple life.

Love this kinda logic. Adaptive farming! My grandfather persevered through drought, with livestock, by not just providing pasture. He kept his weeds, in the ground-covers and the shrubs too. He kept his trees in hedgerows as fodder for his cattle. He always brought healthy cattle to market, no matter what the weather was doing. When the logic to farming is only maximising yields - guess what's the first thing to suffer in a drought? So thanks for sharing Jim's approach, Pete. We need more of it.
@peaceandlove544
@peaceandlove544 5 жыл бұрын
Chris wowww, why did he keep the weeds?
@Christodophilus
@Christodophilus 5 жыл бұрын
peace and love It's the minerals weeds were able to draw up, that the grass couldn't. This was before minerals became an industrial product, so all farmers knew to keep an array of weeds in the pasture. It was more common for a farmer to be disconcerted he didn't have enough weeds for his animals, than becoming disconcerted he had too many! Weeds guaranteed fat and healthy ruminants. In Australia, our soils are really poor and have periodic climate periods of drought too, so it's even more important to keep weeds for animals. Because some weed roots, go down deeper, meaning they'll be able to be grazed, after the grass has died. Coupled with his hedgerows, this is how he was able to get fat cattle to auction, in a drought, when everyone else's animals looked poorly. Grass is what my grandfather fed his cattle in the good years. Weeds were there for the animals to mineralise themselves. But in the bad years, he had weeds and hedgerows as backup. He couldn't fathom why farmers only wanted fields of pasture. It was like waiting for the bomb to go off, and ruin the farmer.

I am doing similar things in my small backyard garden, putting all mowed grass from our own lawn (so no harmful chemicals for sure ) to the garden and all leaves too (fall leaves first go through chicken run then into garden in winter). I started preparing the soil last fall. This is my first year of planting and I have a lot of harvest. Also made some videos to record the harvests. So happy!

My garden & videos will focus on growing weeds. Lol. because they grown themselves in all our garden whether we want them or not. 👍🏾

Grass is an excellent moisture retainer. Try cut your lawn and leave the grass clippings in a pile in the corner or better still in an enclosed composter. In a few weeks you'll see the outside ones very dry but inside the heap it will become almost like an algae. Very moist. So looks like he's using part of that principle here and it clearly works. Great to see.
