Garcia's reaction at 11:13 to the note he missed at 11:11 -- priceless.

The Blues Brothers opened (Akroyd/Belushi), next The New Riders. That's Bill Graham floating down on the giant joint. That's me, somewhere in the audience.

I had just graduated from high school this year and moved from Oregon down to the bay area to go to work at my first full time jobs. I didn't know anything about the Dead then but this was broadcast live on PBS in the entire bay area. It was my first day living there so i sat down and watched all of it. Little did i know 3 years later i went all over the West coast to as many shows as i could for about 3 years and then kind of drifted away from it. It was an interesting time thats for sure.

I had to con my parent to let me go see the dead when I was in the 8th grade. I put together a tape for them to listen to made sure that there were reference to drugs or anything else I didn't they would like, sure enough they gave the Ok and my buddy of mine older brother had a girlfriend knew somebody at the then Capital Center and got us tickets to the left of the stage about 15 rows off the floor and one section back from the stage. Trust me when I say these seats were freaking awesome. The funny thing is as a kid I had some very mature tastes in music but I was no stoner in fact until that night I had never actually seen a joint but that concert I learned what a Universal-Joint was and it had nothing to do with a cars. I can say one thing for sure that in the wee hours of the morning when that concert ended I came out the Capital Center stinking of sweat, cigarette smoke and icky sticky, my eyes were on fire and red as the devil and my head spinning cause I was stoned as slab of granite and higher than kite and seeing the world from a different point of view. Damm, what a long, strange trip it's been.

I went to '67-68' & '68-69' and this brings those memories to light! This was a passing in time. The only other (semi) all-nighter was with the Dead @ The Last Days of the Fillmore West, Hot Tuna, Little Princess 109 did the light show that night (I was on thier guest list)....great evening also.

Sort of an off the wall comment, but are there any Dead fans like me who always wondered why Bob Weir never ended up being a major movie star? I love this period of the Dead, saw them in Winterland the year before.

I don't say this often because 90% of the time w/ the Grateful Dead it is mostly about Garcia but Phil and Bob's playing at the end of Stagger Lee is epic. Jerry was always the driving force but that last minute and a half was all about Phil and Bob on the slide.....and nobody enjoyed it more than Garcia.

The best Dead line-up was the 72 version with the Donna, Keith AND Pigpen. Love this show though, one of my favourites. But the magic definitely went when Brent Mydland joined and they became a much more mainstream, workman-like band.

No, this is set 1. The Dead didn't come on until midnight then played 3 sets until 6am or so, followed by breakfast for everyone in the place. Around 3am, when a lot of people who had not managed their drugs well were falling asleep, someone (I think it may have been Ken Kesey and the Merry Pranksters) rolled a cannon onto the stage and fired it off. Some of my friends jumped 6 feet straight up in the air! I laughed and laughed and laughed...

You may have been there but GD setlists have never been a secret or anything. The Blues Brother's opened, New Riders followed, Dead came on at midnight and played 3 sets until the sun came up. It is a WELL documented concert as being the LAST at Winterland. They played Bertha the night before; 2nd song, 2nd set

Even though I love the Dead, I always hated Donna's voice. That being said, I still think that 70s live dead without Donna would be missing something, t is not always about the greatness of the voice, but the passion. I couldn't imagine This era of the Dead without her!
