Ace Ventura 2. I know it's such a typical film to pick but it was a stepping stone to branch out to people in a humorous manner. And it's ok to be funny is what I got the impression growing up. Although in more "serious" manner, I loved the Truman show. Made me realize how bad or the downside of the world trying to control you in such a manner for their own benefit. And how your decisions were based on arranged plans. Really want to make your life whatever you want not what society wants.

"almost never reinventing himself or the performances he tries to give" I feel like you glossed past Eternal Sunshine to strengthen your overall argument, but the film has had such a profound impact & his performance is so understated and nuanced. It's truly a major oversight & its omission undercuts the claim you're trying to make. Jim Carrey is capable of great dramatic performances, and saying he almost never reinvents the performances he's trying to give is an unnecessary simplification of a culturally significant actor. But in the end, I truly appreciate the effort you put into crafting this video, and, based on your responses to other comments pointing out this oversight, I know you care & want to deliver a comprehensive and insightful video. I'm sure it can't feel good to be called out over and over again about the same thing, so thank you for listening & for continuing to create.

I appreciate the time that went into making this video but I think you missed the mark here. Jim Carrey is "similar" in roles in the same way Robin Williams was "similar" in roles. Both of them are legendary comic actors and brought in enormous box office. Both also went on to serious things that were further out of their wheelhouse. Dismissing "Kidding" and "Eternal Sunshine" to support your argument is frustrating and I disagree with your main premise. So to say people only want 90s Jim Carrey I think is like saying people only want Robin Williams from Good Morning Vietnam. There are very distinct differences in the roles both decided to play later in their careers so it seems like you're minimizing the work and talent required by the actors.

Im a new viewer, just found this channel a week ago, and have enjoyed perusing the career videos. But this one baffles me. The choices are so strange. Eternal Sunshine gets a glancing mention and then a minute is spent discussing his performance in the Kick Ass sequel. No mention of I Love You Philip Morris, and I found the discussion of the Truman Show could have been done better. But I may just be biased there as it's a favorite movie of mine. I am just very confused. It feels like half a video, but it's 17 minutes long.

Carrey's role in Kidding is interesting to watch. In the show, he's a kid tv presenter in a similar to Mr Rogers, which Carreys heightened acting channels well into but it also leaves you feeling like the character can't seem to let go of that mask even when they're not on tv and grieving. The thing with Man in the Moon is that Carry did an almost perfect Andy Kaufman impression throughout the entire shoot. The problem is Andy Kauffman was impossible to work with himself so someone so in character that they insist on behaving like Kaufman even when the camera isn't rolling is going to be hard to work with as well. The other failure of the movie was simply that Kauffman was a divisive comedian those who liked him absolutely loved him, but most people just didn't find him funny. For some reason the producers and studio thought that Kaufman was much more universally loved then he actually is.

Not mentioning that "show that almost no one has heard of" was a bit of a blunder. Kidding is an intricate, nuanced performance from Carrey that we haven't really seen before. Its also suuuuuper self-referential to his own career and the effects living in the limelight have had on him, which makes it pretty relevant to your analysis.

Carrey is a fantastic physical actor. The transformation from the uncomfortable, twitchy, unsure Stanley Ipkiss to the deliberate, expressive, bombastic Mask is really well done, you feel like the Mask has allowed Stanley to stop caring and just go wild. It's not just The Mask either - in Sonic as Robotnik he's very deliberate, with occasional expressive, uncontrolled movements when he's surprised, or saying something off the cuff, or he thinks he's alone. I feel he captures Dr. Robotnik really well.

I thinks it isn't just a matter of the industry. Jim Carrey also changed as a person and tried different things. He has his genius and characteristics that won't change because it's his personality. And he doesn't have to change it. You couldn't ask for Rembrandt to change his entire style just because of the trends of his age.

You are right that the Sonic movie is relying on Sonic for attracting people in but Carrey really made it for me when I did see it. From going to another copy paste movie based on a already established character to something with very funny interactions that caught me off guard. Would have been terrible without him.

Dude, u dropped the ball. We ALL love Jim Carrey. And as some of the comments here prove, u glossed over some of his more ambitious projects

What about The Majestic (2001)? It was a heart warming drama with light comedic notes that Carrey was able to tone down his crazy for and it worked brilliantly. Not a huge box office and not a classic film, but certainly his second best dramatic performance behind Eternal Sunshine (which everyone else has already noted you glossed over). I think he had a good dramatic phase that showed his range and his ability to change and adapt.

I think you're the only one that hasn't heard of Kidding. The show that's already on it's second season. I think that's what makes Jim Carrey a great actor because he knows how to balance comedy and drama. You could really see that in Kidding and Eternal Sunshine. But you wouldn't know that obviously

No mention of Once Bitten, his first American movie back in 1985. How I recognized him when In Living Color debuted.

After Ace Ventura he followed it up with The Mask. Cause of it's popularity, it cemented his career. Then he put icing on the cake with Dumb and Dumber.

Jim Carrey was my main reason for me going to see Sonic, if I hadn't seen him in the trailer I wouldn't have cared.

Jim Carrey is a brilliant actor. His early movies are always really fun stories based around a singular premise. Later stuff he’s just a star in movies. Although tbf i didnt know he was in kick ass 2 until i googled the cast on like the second time of watching, really shocked me.

This hurt my feelings. I think Jim is great and his hbo show is very good and he has versatility, just not that many opportunities to show it

You forgot The Majestic being one of his serious roles. He was in The Bad Batch briefly, I think he is more versatile than you give him credit for.

Captain Midnight. Jim Carey is like one of the finest examples of bizzare even back then in his beginnings most of us aren't surprised anymore lol. In any case, nice input.

What about dark crimes? How can you leave all this in and not even mention this complete character flip of a film. Dark, gritty, thought provoking. Nothing like the Jim Carrey you describe in this video. The chops this man possesses for film is incredible. You just didn't seem to look hard enough.

*Jim Carrey is a comedic icon. This man pretty much defined my childhood because I always appreciate the way how he cured my depression by putting a huge smile on my face and making me laugh till I cried. Thank you Jim.* ✊🏾🙏🏾
