The primary reason most people invest in stocks is the potential return compared to alternatives such as bank certificates of deposit, gold, and Treasury bonds. For example, the average stock market return has been about 10% annually since 1926; long-term government bonds have returned 5% to 6% annually during the same period.

Stock market's returns often significantly outpace the rate of inflation. For example, the long-term inflation rate has run about 3.1% annually since 1913. That compares to a double-digit annual return from stocks. Stocks have been a good way to hedge against inflation.

Yeah, financial advisors could make a lot of difference, particularly in a market such as this. Bonds are pretty unstable at the moment, but if you do the right math, you should be just fine. Bloomberg and other finance media have been recording cases of folks gaining over 250k just in a matter of weeks/couple months, so I think there are a lot of wealth transfer in this downtime if you know where to look. I have been using an FA since 2020, and I return at least $30k ROI, and this does not include capital gain.

I think there is an implied disconnect here in this video between the Fed funds rate and long term bonds. I would say they are more connected than implied in this video. Long term bonds are heavily influences by short term bonds. Part of the reason the 'higher for longer' verbage is being shared around and bond yields are rising at the same time is because no one wants to buy a long term bonds at lower yields than short term. For example, why would someone buy a 10 year bond at 4% when the 2 year bonds are yielding 5% or more for the next 5 years? That has a massive impact on the 10-year treasury market.

I have not been able to find an easy to understand reason as to why the yields are going up in the treasuries. Are they somehow market determined? If so, what is the mechanism? I can only imagine reasons made by someone in a government that just goes "yea, the lower yields bonds are not seeing lots of buying, so maybe we'll just increase it a bit and let's see if people want it." Is that how it is?

I don't understand why the Bond prices are falling (2:45), since the yield is going up. Higher and higher yields are something that investors look for, so there should be more demand for high-yielding Bonds, which should also drive the prices up.
@ARyderK2 ай бұрын
But ask yourself why the yield is going up? Supply and demand. Nobody wants us bonds. Only ones buying us bonds are the allies that are trying to keep it propped up to show face. After what us did to Russian holdings and gave it to Ukraine, the whole world is saying wow they can do that to us...
@yirvee16 күн бұрын
Bond prices and yields have an inverse relationship, meaning when one goes up, the other goes down. When bond yields increase, it means that newly issued bonds are offering higher interest rates. This makes existing bonds with lower interest rates less attractive to investors. As a result, the demand for these older, lower-yielding bonds decreases, causing their prices to fall.
