I don't get how people can still think something is too weird for a source material after musicals like Cats

There is that “WHY?” Steve Sondheim always asked. Would turning a source material into a Musical improve on it or not. Granted that ANY SUBJECT MATTER can be a Musical, NOT EVERYTHING CAN BE MADE INTO A “SUCCESSFUL MUSICAL”.

The 'Blue Eyed Baker' song was genuinely one of the funniest performances I have ever seen. Claire Moore was just FANTASTIC. If this show returns, I highly recommend that everyone see it, it is definitely worth it!

I mean, Spelling Bee is one of my favorite musicals ever, so I have no issues believing that ‘competition’ musicals can be great. I’m honestly surprised that there was so much backlash to the idea.

Any idea could potentially be a great musical with the right team behind it and cast in it- and sounds like this one has all the right ingredients. Get it...get it?

I loved this show and it was very cool to have a brand new show in my local theatre. Can we just appreciate how stunning the Everyman theatre is ! Just wanting a cast recording now pls 😆

Went to this on the Matinee on the last day! I absolutely loved it! Had me crying with both laughter and emotions. The poor woman next to me was bawling her eyes out at the same two moments I think you were referring to. She had to bring back tissues from the toilet! Will definitely be recommending this to everyone if it tours or gets a transfer! 🍰🎤

I was skeptical...but it sounds like they might be taking a leaf out of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee only basing it on the Bake-Off instead of the Bee . It actually has a solid precedent if you look at it like that.

This is simply the "Contest Show": A Chorus Line, Cats, 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, Ride the Cyclone etc. "Here are these set of characters, all with the same goal they are competing for. Here they singing about their lives..."

Im actually so excited that you’re reviewing this - I go to the drama college attached to the Everyman in Cheltenham so seeing them do a successful show feels very surreal

When I first heard of this musical I had no interest in seeing it at all, I though it would just be a bit silly and probably not worth the money/ travel. After watching this I really want to go and see it!!! It sounds wonderful🤩 I'd definitely be purchasing tickets if/when it reappears

This was such a great review! I don't watch the show admittedly, but you were so excited about so many things and made it sound like so much fun I'd totally give it a try. Especially, like you said if it were in town and say friends wanted to go. That totally sounds like a great besties night out type of show with plenty of marketing potential. Imagine all the fun pre-show things they could do, like desserts in the lobby and fun bake-off themed cocktails and stuff.

I’d love to see this show tour regionally! Gutted that I didn’t get to see it for its recent run. I agree that people may think it’s not got a big enough hype yet to bring in the West End audiences, but I would 100% go see it if it came anywhere near me on a tour. So many people love the TV show so I think it would be a nice introduction to musical theatre in general for those who aren’t already fans of the genre ☺️

It’s interesting to hear you talk about a show where you come for the subject matter but what draws you in is the stories of the protagonists and their relationships with each other under different circumstances and pressures. That’s what a reality show is. But is also what draws us to shows like Come From Away. That’s the comparison I made as you described it. Very interested now and it makes so much more sense now
@nicksmith61552 жыл бұрын
I'm hoping its going to tour as I missed it at Cheltenham. Great review and definitely sounds like a must see. Charlotte Wakefield is one of my faves having seen her in Mamma Mia, Oklahoma and Chitty, and of course she was Wendla in Spring Awakening that earned her an Olivier nomination.

I wish you had seen Charlotte Wakefield and Michael Xavier in The Sound of Music at the Open Air Theatre (ie your fave)! What a production that was and they were both perfection! If I could have any recording of a show I have seen it would be that one.

I love seeing you so enthusiastic about new pieces! And I know how you feel - I’m the same way with The Noteworthy Life Of Howard Barnes (by Kooman & Dimond). You’re not likely to get to see a production (though hope springs eternal), but there’s an original cast album and I strongly encourage anyone who loves (or hates) musicals to give it a listen. The plot isn’t 100% clear from the songs, so I’d suggest finding a synopsis online, but it’s a super fun listen. I really hope it has a future beyond the production I saw, and I’d love to see it get more attention!

I saw the final matinee and loved it - so many great comedic moments, as well as the heartfelt ones you mentioned. I did feel like something was missing though, and it took me a while to work out what it was, but I think it was the lack of any filming crew. We're getting a 'backstage look' at the show, but there was no director or camera person character, which I think would have rounded it out perfectly. My Mum also thought they needed to have some actual ingredients, rather than miming all the baking, but I'm not sure how practical that would be on stage..!

Because of this review, I subscribed to their KZbin channel. I think I know the song that made you cry, they recently posted, "MY DAD". OMG it brought me to tears. All the songs that they have posted are amazing. The trailer of opening night at the Noel Coward Theatre (Did you go?) is perfect, the guy who plays Paul, got a handshake from the real Paul! I soooo hope this comes to NYC! 🥰

I loved this show, brilliant cast! One recurring joke got me every time, towards the end of an episode. A couple of criticisms. The duet song didn't ring true for me because, remember Mary Berry? And one character was too schmaltzy for me, they kind of bent the rules of Bake Off to make quite a few scenes work!
