Thank goodness for explorers like yourself and previous photographers. So much of our industrial heritage would have been lost for ever.

Wow another great walk down memory Lane. The photos by Chris Booth, did he leave Boughton Lane school in 1961? If so we were in the same class. As you skipped past Creswell, the 'nice' red brick cottages are built in an oval and were named the model village. Thank you so much for the tour and the pleasure 😊. Regards Terry Johnson in New Zealand Zealand ex Clowne lad.

Thanks for the video Ant! I was born and lived in Clowne until the 1990s and the disused Clowne South station site and ticket office was always a fascination. I remember as a kid in the 1980s the ticket office was repurposed as branch of the TSB Bank! The limestone cutting immediately west of the station was infilled around 1980 when the Chestnut Drive development was built. The infill ends just before the road over bridge on Boughton Lane and line carries on north west towards Barlborough and after a deep cutting under Chesterfield Road (also infilled), the line was severed by the M1 motorway. The track bed still continues after the M1 towards Spinkhill (more infilled cutting after Renishaw Hill). Be good if you could continue the journey all the way to Beighton! Im sure the Wobbly Runner did this section a couple of years ago 🤔

Fascinating stuff. I was born in King's Mill hospital and grew up in the Warsop/Shirebrook area. The story of the viaduct was interesting. The wooden reinforcement looks a lot like the centring that would have been used to support the masonry when the arches were first built - arches only become self supporting when you've laid the keystone at the very top of the arch and then the temporary centring can be removed. But even that remedial work wasn't enough to combat the effects of mining subsidence. I wonder if any other viaduct has been buried in an embankment like that.
@sugarbertie11433 ай бұрын
Did you know that the railwaymen called the section up from Killamarsh to Clowne , the 'Clog and Knocker'? I've never found out why, maybe because it was a steep section? I didn't know they'd done that restoration at Clowne station and I only live a couple of miles away! That's me down there tomorrow for a look!! Great video!!

Where you changed to another day, that part from where the station was, that was a deep cuttin, the road you crossed over was a bridge when the trains were being used, to get to where the old viaduct was also a cutting. I used to play in the cutting has my friends grandparents lived on West st with the cutting at the bottom of their garden

Do you know whether it was a bridge or level crossing on Hazlemere Road? We live in Clowne and I've looked on National Library of Scotland maps and can't find a definitive answer! My 5 year old often wants to go that way and always asks! The stream you saw in the V goes through a high tunnel that used to have a footpath down from the bridge and down over the water through the tunnel, and the path then went alongside the railway next to the Rectory.
@TrekkingExploration3 ай бұрын
Hi Charlotte I'm pretty sure it would be a level/ gated crossing as there's no embankment and the trackbed is exactly the same level as the road. I love that you're little one is interested too ❤️
