It's a shame though that most of the buildings you will find on those streets are barely shadows of their past selves. During communism most of the buildings beautiful fronts, beautiful sculptures and decorations were clipped down to make them fit 'working man' aesthetics, and less 'bourgeoisie'. It's a real shame, but slowly some of them are getting back at least some of it's former flair as they are being renovated, eg Foksal 13 and 15.

@comdo8312 жыл бұрын
Not true about the sunlight. If the ground is yours, the sky belongs to you too. You still have to adhere to the city planning regulations though. The old building represents no value what so ever. Some crazy people are blocking its demolition. You wouldn't find absurdities like that in the US because people in the US have enough sense not to preserve old garbage only because the brick is 100+ years old.

I did try Francisco Galarraga's Argentinian empanadas (Chimi&Churri) at Grzybowska street (probably the one that you mentioned) and I confirm, it's a must. Now, if you want to try REAL local traditional street food, go to "Pyzy, Flaki Gorące" at Podwale street 5 (close to the Old Town). They serve food in jars! I recommend in particular the delicious Warsaw-style beef tripes with meatballs. As for exploring Warsaw centre, don't miss the area to the south of Aleje Jerozolimskie (Koszykowa, Emilii Plater, Lwowska streets), it's one of the few places that escaped total destruction during WW2. You'll have a glimpse of the pre-war 19th-century Warsaw (tenement houses) that is largely gone in other parts of the city. And, why not explore the "exotic" Warsaw? I suggest two Asiatic markets: at Bakalarska street and the biggest one, Marywilska 44. Attention: the latter has what IMO is Warsaw's best Asian food court.

You mention Śródmieście Południowe, and while it's true some of the buildings are socrealistic in their nature, it is not the whole story. Some of the buildings have been rebuilt after the war on the old plot with same space, some were burned inside but had walls standing. After the war the beautiful XIXc. decorations were clipped down because they were deemed 'too bourgeoisie' for the 'working man'. And now you have gray, plastered, straight walls where once were beautiful façades with sculptures, fancy balconies and nice tiles and decorations. From time to time there are 'city walks' organized by varsavianists

Check the InterContinental hotel building, how it allows the older buildings access to day light... IMHO it is a grace period, sooner or later you will find some problems specifically in Śródmieście Płd./Płn. e.g. is dehumanisation of the ground level at the Aleje Jerozolimskie , Marszałkowska, Chmielna - are deserted, every 2nd shop is 7/11 or specifically Alko24h shop or Kebap. Almost no regular business, shops or restaurants, bars, cafeterias ( I think even chain ones are migrating). '90, '00 you would find an infinite stream of people on those wide pavements. That is the price of malls and places like Norblin, Browary or Hala Koszyki - I still count it will change. Love Warsaw!

They have very good restaurant named blueberry duck. Fancy dishes in wonderfull place with great, very inteligent waiters and awesome chef. Prices are affordable. Enjoy Warsaw and mazowsze.

If you like modern architecture you should visit ,,Służewiec" one day, which is full of new buildings. It's business and residential district with a lot of restaurants and cafe's. It's unofficially named ,,Mordor" same as on JRR Tolkien books. There is also city called Konstancin-Jeziorna very close to Warsaw where are very expensive and beautiful villas. I think these places are worth visiting some day.

I love your feelings, your observations while wandering streets of Warsaw. It's so refreshing for the one born and raised here. The eye of a stranger, an outsider. And you are, no offence. But if you both will decide, that my city is the place to live for longer you should - no, you MUST - dig deeper into it's history, Then you'll undestand why we have so mish-mashed architectural styles here, why the Old Town in Warsaw is the youngest Old Town in the world. Visit some museums. Obligatory - Warsaw Museum at the Old Town Square and Museum of Warsaw Uprising (Muzeum Powstania Warszawskiego) at Grzybowska 79 (more ul. Przyokopowa). And if wou'll happen to be on the the other side of the river - Muzeum Warszawskiej Pragi (Warsaw's Praga Museum) at Targowa 50/52. And one more museum - the one in lifetime experience - Polin Museum (History of Polish Jews Museum) at Anielewicza 6, the Warsaw's Ghetto area during WW2. Reserve 5-6 hours for this one. Good luck to you both and i hope your child's first breath will be of Warsaw's air.

29:25 pls - At the end of the video, I've noticed this several times, please end the video with an announcement - so, "that's the end of the video, I hope you had fun, I'm happy to see you again"... Or " this is the end of the video l please subscribe to the channel and click the like button"...so far it's always so surprising to suddenly see the end without any "goodbye".

Those huge socialist-era apartment blocks are known as "mrówkowce" ("anthills") and they are intimidating. But the biggest mrówkowiec you will find in the city of Katowice in the south of Poland - the Superjednostka. It's a scary building. BTW Katowice is an amazing city, worth visiting for a few days

I have to check it out and let you know - until recently there was a tiny Mexican restaurant, run by people from Mexico, very close to an Indian restaurant. The address is: Aleja Solidarności 84, El Mexicano

About the balconies, we used to do the same in Portugal (closing them for storage and avoid trashing/dust flying over) but in the last 10 years new marquises (the name in Portuguese) were forbidden. But the ones that were done, were grandfathered in. They make buildings very ugly, specially because people choose the colors and the type of glass without considering architectural and design perspectives.

16:44 - You should really do yourselves a favour and eat at Munja which is sharing the location with Ibis on Grzybowska Street. Fantastic Balkan food, run by a Montenegran ( I believe) family. Seriously, the food is unreal. On the more expensive side of things though :)

The new flats with large balconies that you like are in modern parts of the city and are built by a Spanish company Acciona, so they are identical like in Spain. The only thing that misses is the Mediterranean Sea. And I suppose they are extremally expensive.

Regarding mexican food: there's tough competition here in Warsaw, but my personal best has got to be La Sirena, although it's a little pricy. If you choose to go there make sure you try one of their cocktails, they might be even better then the food.

@@planetjames95 Also, I only now am watching your Q&A, and it's worth mentioning that it's extremally common for parents in Warsaw to share, as in give away what they have once their kids grow out of it. It's done through FB groups and is a great way to save some money. You can get strollers, clothes, pretty much everything, and you see it beforehand, so not much chance for getting any shabby deal. Should you be interested I can set you up

One tiny correction: the ó is pronounced like a short European _u_. It is written as "ó" because of historical reasons but never pronounced like "o". In Russian, it corresponds to an "o" sound, in Ukrainian to "i". So to say, Kraków is pronounced like [krakuv] and its Ukrainian name is Краків. Similarly, the Polish names of Kharkiv and Kyiv are Charków and Kijów respectively.
