In this vlog I share highlights from this spectacular event, including on ride POV's from a variety of attractions in the fantastic Fun Fair. This includes a very unique travelling Toboggan roller coaster! Great Vlog. I got to the Great Dorset Steam Fair for the first time this year. ( Been wanting to go for 30yrs +) What an event!! You summed it up well. I camped on site and spent 3 1/2 days in the show, definitely didn't see it all. An amazing atmosphere, especially at night. Seeing the Wurzles live was great, there was a big crowd for their show. I was sad to come home. But all being well it won't be my last visit 😁👍

One thing to note if you're ever there again, is that right on midnight, all the showman's engines in the funfair area all sound their whistles together, which is spectacular to hear and goes on for a good three minutes at least. Always a brilliant event and glad you enjoyed it :)

I live 10mins from the festival but didn't get to go this year so watching your video as always was Brilliant. I especially enjoyed the Combat Engineer Tractor riding around the area and the Train from Shilingstone on the lowloader. Great video and hope you enjoyed Dorset.

5:51: That is why anyone can come down to Dorset and do what they love because it’s pretty much a combination of anything one would love. Also, I’d say the advantage about camping is that you are able to catch all the early morning shows and all the late night shows and if you are there on the Sunday next year and you’re there at midnight, you will be nowhere near missing the famous midnight whistles. I’m gutted I didn’t book for the Sunday to see them.

And you’ll hear all the organs playing the National Anthem as well, whether it’s just God Save the Queen, whether it’s Old Lang Syne or a combination of both along with many more, that all plays at midnight to end the Nights of the current year.

Fairground organs are so fascinating! I’m actually friends with someone who doesn’t live as a far from me that has a little collection of organs. Seeing them in person when they start to play they always make me jump but actually they’re just beautiful instruments.

I seem to recall seeing somewhere that the organ theme in RCT was actually a pre-existing organ piece so it’s quite possible that it’s the same. It certainly sounds like the same piece to me.

Thanks, really enjoyed your coverage of this. It was odd knowing that I was there at the same time, seeing much the same things. As far as Carters go, the Freak Show venue is presented, I believe, by Joby Carter. On one occasion, a few years back, there were some other Carters rides present - I remember the Octopus, for sure. The main fairground, this, year, actually seemed to have a few less rides than previously…no Superstar, Super Bowl, Extreme, Freak Out or Booster, for example. Going back a while, there was always a log flume, too. Ultimately, theres still a lot of rides, though. Somewhere you may not have noticed was the ‘auto jumble’ area at the top of the trade hill. There have sometimes been ex-fairground bits-and-pieces for sale up there, somewhat similar to the park stuff you collect. Also, in the trade area, are vendors that sell model fairground vehicles and traction engines, if you enjoy those. Additionally, there was always a stall that sold a lot of fairground books and publications, although I didn’t find that this year. There’s always so much to see.

I went years ago and really enjoyed myself there is plenty for all the family to do, we saw old farm machinery being demonstrated, ploughing and flour being milled, we even bought some flour to take home and at the end we saw the fairground organs and went on the rides. I have been to lots of smaller ones around the country too with working steam engines moving around. There are a few in Yorkshire but the Dorset one is the biggest.

Hi Shawn. Welcome to my neck of the woods. I live just about 3 miles away from the steam fair. I am 77 now and until my good lady passed around three years ago.We always used to go, but we always took our caravan along as well. in fact two steam fairs each year. One at Netley Marsh Steam and Craft Show, In July. Near Southampton and of course The Great Dorset Steam fair. Both enormous venues. Always a great time to be had. By the way the reverse bungee as you said is called a “Slingshot” but I sure you would know that. And if you haven’t rode one, you really have too, for the ultimate adrenalin rush. I can remember being a kid back in the 70's riding the toboggan that used to visit our local fair every year in Canada. Very few of them left these days. Only one I know of still in Canada with West Coast Amusements as far as I know.

Shawn, Just like you I am mesmerized by Fair Organs of any kind whether on vehicles or Merry Go Rounds. Player pianos, commercial music boxes and their ilk are wonderful!!! This steam faire is wonderful, wish it were here. I wonder of Charlotte would have enjoyed it, no wet or overly wild things! The only ride I ever got sick on is the wall of doom if it's the one that spins and presses you against it whilst the floor drops out! Cheers, Rik

Been to Dorset Steam a few times in the past & always stayed here for least 3days,it realy is amazing, & the food they serve might sound exspensive but they only have the best Mobile catering Companys going & realy do serve top food well worth it. you said it right shawn it is like a GLASTONBURY but with STEAM. trully recomend for every1 to go if never been, save up & make it a special event of your year, truly is out of this world. ^5

Been going to Dorset steam fair for 20+years. Got to say it used to be atleast double in size. The fun fair always had the biggest and best rides and was atleast another 10/15rides there. Since the original man who run it died its gone downhill

There is camping there, so, you can book for however long you want. Also, if you want to stay up for the late night events, I’d definitely recommend camping as I bet you wouldn’t want to be driving home at midnight. And remember to pre-book well in advance before either tickets sell out or Martin Oliver (director of the event) doesn’t want pressurising numbers arriving on the day. Maybe it may be too close to the event to decide to camp. They are all the reasons why camping could be cancelled for last minute bookers.

Used to love the Tobbagon at Great Yarmouth I think I was about 12 when they sold it. It was very fun but I came off it with cuts and bruises I think that's why they sold it. Great to this one still going. I love the steam engines too. I had 2 working models as a kid. One I still have the other sadly exploded.

It’s great to see Midnight Express operating here as well. It was at my local fun fair on the Lincoln South Common one year ago! It was the first ever matterhorn I have ever been on and I really enjoyed it. Exceeded expectations that did! My local fun fair is coming back next month for five days. I’ll be hearing music out of my bedroom window again, it’s going to be a wild week! New rides are coming to Lincoln as well. I don’t know what they are yet but I will find out in due course.

I’m so sad Carters is being sold! Even if the next owner keeps it as a collection and keeps it open to the public…it will be shoved in some cold and dark warehouse surrounded by ugly walls and fluorescent lights instead of outside with green grass beneath your feet, and blue skies and sunshine ! Fairs are supposed to be outside…especially the ones meant to make you feel like back in time..because nobody was putti fairs in warehouses in the 1900s! They’re supposed to be outside… also is much more bright, and photos on daylight are much better looking than all the photos I’ve seen from all those “under cover fairs” like Folly Farm…for example. I am so sooo happy at least we got this one last fair that is acutely set outside…with a few amazing vintage rides so my future kids can see the magic of it as well! I really do hope Carters will sale to someone who will put the fair outside at least in summer time…but i really doubt it sadly.. most owners only care about money…they don’t actually have passion for this,,and do not care if people will enjoy the experience fully in an authentic way, being able to take amazing authentic back in time -looking photos! I am honestly gutted for what’s happening with Carters…but i am having hopes for this Dorset fair that the rides will remain and will be coming every year.
