Not a lot for fun. Not fun to watch either. When you follow someone that close the student will make the same mistakes as the teacher. You will only be as good a Captain as your teacher. Marty, there is not a long term boat owner out there who hasn’t crunched their boat. You had the perfect storm. High winds, concrete dock and trying to do it alone. It’s no ones fault. You met my looper friends - they hit bottom twice on their trip so far this year causing significant damage and they are gold loopers who know their stuff. Hang in there, it’s all part of the experience. A little fiberglass repair and she’s good as new. Don’t sweat it!

You two need to make your own decisions and own them. Blame is a cancer. Frankly the more independent decisions you make, the more authentic the adventure will be. There should be at least some portion of the trip that is uncoordinated. Kind of an, "I'll see ya when I see ya" sort of thing. Credit Mike for his intentions, which were the best, not the result. The same is true for when you don't follow his lead. He should credit you with the best of intentions.

"You are the Captain of your ship" ! Marty - this is SO true ! I've spoken these words several times and repeated them to my wife and sons when they have helped me with my boat. I take input from other boaters, but when it comes time to make a decision, Its MY boat and ultimately my decision. Boating will test any relationship. I'm glad you and your buddy Mike didn't let that get in the way. We all feel your pain. We've all been there too! Have a couple of beers, love up on your dogs ( one of my favorite things about your channel ) and it'll be okay. Wind can shake the best of captains confidence. I feel for ya. Wish I was there to have been on your boat helping you dock. I always want to help because I know what it does for my nerves when people help me in tense situations when boating. Hang in there man.

Very true, but the decisions are not always that easy. Often, if we stay in our comfort zone, we don't improve. Marty was obviously following Mike's lead because of Mike's experience. Marty expressed his discomfort, but he trusted Mike's judgment and was also confident in his abilities. So, Marty pressed the envelope, and got bit. Marty is learning that experience doesn't insulate one from a judgment error. Mike made a judgment error in recommending that marina in those winds. Marty "followed blindly" because Mike is sort of his mentor (when it comes to boating). In retrospect, Marty wishes that he had followed his own judgment and gone to the lee side of an island, with a protected anchorage. So, Marty made a judgment error by "following blindly" his mentor. Marty never explained why he didn't just stay on the mooring ball for one more night. Maybe the wind was predicted to build.

@@arthurmontana8791 I question Mikes judgement. That dock was not a suitable dock for any boat. It was a Lee shore and there were large swells blowing in from the windward side. I've been boating since I was 10. I'm 72 now. I would never have considered that dock.

Hey Marty, there's nothing wrong with being cautious however, a life where you don't take risks from time to time, may be "Safe" but it's also Boring. It's obvious that Mike is more of a "Take life by the Horns" type of guy and you're more the laid back easy going type. There's nothing wrong with that and, it's a good chemistry because each of you have strengths that helps the other learn and grow. Just remember Marty... the best things in life come when you step OUTSIDE of your comfort zone. Playing it safe is easy, it's just not very rewarding. The last thing you want to do is look back at your life and think "I played it safe, I didn't experience much but... I played it safe. Don't give up Marty, consider each day, another day to conquer your fears and succeed in your journey... both ON and OFF the Sea! Wishing you luck and peace of mind!

Marty, you did good. You have a lot of windage on your boat, you single handed into a marina in high winds and didn't hit anybody, that's a real success, don't beat yourself up over it. You couldn't really stay where you were, the dogs need to get off, maybe your choice of a sheltered anchorage would have been better but I don't think a marina was a bad shout at all. Had that first dock been higher with wooden fendering this would have been a complete non-event. Sadly, it wasn't but we live and learn all the time in boating. Somebody told me that when you stop learning, it's probably time to hang up your anchor which sounds fairly accurate! I know the damage is heart-breaking, but that's a fairly easy repair, especially for a man of your talents but the repair will give you yet more experience and, hey, it will be another video! Boating, to me, gives the extremes of emotions. It can be extremely stressful, frightening at times and hugely challenging. It also gives you the best times in your life. Fair winds to you!

Its just a record of the trip, on the side of the boat. It happens. The wave wasn't your fault. You took a risk but didn't get away with it. The big thing is it could have been a lot worse, but it wasn't. If you see a person who has made no mistakes, then there is a person who hasn't lived. If you see a person make the same mistake twice, then there is a person who doesn't learn. You are neither of these. Look at it this way, you can now learn how to repair fibreglass and gell coat and add that to your skills also. Draw in the positives. I was working on my little 14 ft power boat on its trailer on the drive last weekend. I had taken the seats out so the deck was clear. I jumped into the boat and went straight through the floor! So now I am learning about replacing a floor in a boat, plus counting my blessings that I didn't loose my passengers behind me, into the sea, still sat in their seats. Keep on exploring Marty, keep learning, and if the odd mistake kicks in, well hell, we're not laughing at you.

How is your elbow now? I remember months ago you were saying that you had an elbow issue. Is that the same elbow? I know what the crunch feels like. I crunched my new to me RV within 2 days of owning it due to tail swing. I spent years backing in my travel trailer and smaller class c. This one is longer and tail swing is ridiculous. All I have to say to that... I became a fiberglass expert real quick. I spent hours watching youtube tutorials and got my hands dirty. After using just about every type of sand paper grit... it is flat as glass but wrong color. I tried to color match it best I could but it is here to stay. My advice to you on the matter is #1 get your elbow thing figured out and #2 go over fiberglass with a fine tooth comb not just where it crunched but everywhere on the side of the boat. Never know if it weakened fiberglass elsewhere while crunching here. In scuba diving and commercial drone flying there are terms like “know when to say when”, “pilot in command” etc. It is a sinking feeling but we tend to make mistakes when we are under stress. If your gut feeling is iffy, if you get those weird vibes... bail and reassess the situation. I crunched my rv because I was stressed (stupid squirrel ate my engine wiring harness on the truck just 2 days before a camping trip) so I took RV while pissed off... advance auto gave me wrong parts, I had to return there 3 times that day. By last time I thought I was done... I was pissed and living and furious that I could not get all parts. In a new york minute I almost took a $3000 awning on rv and put a deep gash to the back quarter panel of RV. Coulda shoulda woulda.... left it on the bloody street and let myself cool down. I hope you can find peace with this nasty event and persevere. If anything I would rather see you get to new york slower and waiting out weather than faster and dealing with all this drama you obviously do not need. Extending a much needed manly bear hug.
@groundzero.
@groundzero. 3 жыл бұрын
almost paused the video to make a comment. And then you covered it. Some times learning can be painful, costly, or both. The only mistake is not learning from it. You have been presented with an opportunity to learn how to patch fiberglass. (yes i probably would of lost my shit and punched the wall of blew a hole in the hull and sunk the boat out of anger)

Marty, I'm 65, boated with my family for 25 years, we would live on the boat all summer, the kids grew up on the boat and we all make those mistakes. Yes you are the Captain and follow your gut feeling. But accident will always happen by accident or stupidity. I remember one time in the Thousand islands (you should be going through that area on the loop) I was coming into the gas dock in a 36" chop with our 50' footer and there was one open spot and I felt confident that I would fit but the kid on the dock is on the radio saying turn around but I was past the point of no return and i came in hot, bow in quick reverse and docked it like a boss. Felt like Captain Ron. Hundreds of people on the upper deck restaurant gave me a standing ovation and applauded. We fueled up and there was only one boat ahead of us and he was gone but I faced a cement pier. I had it all figured out, bow out twin screw Port turn, I started but I'm going forward, i figured the chop is keeping in I have to give it more throttle to get the boat to turn but I'm going forward faster, more gas still going forward the cement pier is coming fast, full reverse but you don't stop a 50' steel trawler on a dime. Ka-bang into the pier huge crashing noise. Everyone was looking at this boat crash, a huge dent in my starboard bow. I just shut her down in humiliation. Then someone on the top restaurant deck said hey sir something is hanging on your back end. We could see something but could not make it out. My 15 yr son put on the scuba gear and went down. He came up with a giant piece of dark plastic heavy-gauge sheeting that had wrapped itself around my starboard prop. As he came up with it the people gave us a huge cheer. I was pissed and relieved that it wasn't really my fault but still humiliated after being such a hero. Marty that's boating.

Marty, I need to ask: how many hours/years of boating experience do you have? From what I have gathered from watching your videos, you are still pretty raw in your experience. Your attempt at doing the Great Loop at this juncture of your boating experience might just be a bit too ambitious right now. I boated for about 5 summers on LI way back when plus the past 2.5 years for 350 hours to date and I can tell you that from what I have seen, you are much less experienced at actual boating than I am and I'm not so sure I would attempt the loop myself. For starters, I would have never left Ruskin to start the loop with your one motor blowing smoke the way it was when you left the dock and without all of my instruments working properly. I strike this up as inexperience showing and you just barely left the dock. Also, an arm isn't going to do a single thing to stop a 14,000# boat and for you to hurt your arm in attempting to do so is a function of your lack of experience. You can't blame the circumstances and you can't blame Mike. You need to take a good hard look at what you are trying to do given your present level of experience and realize that you just might be in a bit over your head. You're still young. If I were you, I would seriously consider going back to Ruskin and doing a LOT of boating over the course of the next 2-5 years or at least gain 300 more logged hours of boating before attempting this journey again. Also, I remember watching you docking your boat one time before you even started this journey and realized that you are a guy with a tremendous amount of fishing and kayaking experience but you are highly inexperienced at actual boating. I'm only trying to help you to take a good look at where you are at and to help you to reevaluate what you are doing before you hurt yourself, one of the dogs, or much more seriously damage your vessel. Good luck! Steve/Brown Eyed Girl/Fort Myers

I hope that Marty reads your comment and reexamines what he's doing. He is definitely not prepared and lacks the experience to appreciate how unprepared he is. I suspect from his demeanor, that he is starting to comprehend the situation and reconsidering this trip.

There's something about boats Marty - It happens to me too. Sometimes things go wrong and then you start to worry about other things that might also go wrong and a negative mindset and downward spiral of thoughts creeps into your mind. Then you fix what needs fixing and have a great day/s on the water where things go right and it's like you are reminded why we love these expensive, floating money pits and why at the end of the day it's all worth it.

I'm a captain !! You as a captain are responsible for what happens with the vessel you are the captain of.it's your job as Captain to decide what course to take if you don't feel comfortable with something don't do it do what you feel comfortable with your responsible for your vessel and he's responsible for his!! I think it's time for you to realize it's time for you to fly the nest

Marty, when you are out doing things in the world, good things will happen as well as the occasional mess up. Case in point, I had my new pickup for about a month. I was hooking up my 18' fish and ski boat to the shiny new truck and had the bright idea of not moving the truck, but instead, pick up the tongue of the trailer and move the trailer/boat to the truck. Trouble was, the yard was more of an incline than I thought and now my trailer tongue is heading right for the tailgate. Try as I might, I couldn't hold it back and rammed the tongue right into the middle of the tailgate making a fist size indention. Grrrrrrr. My immediate response was to go back to bed and get under the covers but the next day, I made arrangements at the body shop to have it fixed. Oh well.

You learned and grew from this experience. At the start of this video I had words to say to you. As I watched, you said them to yourself. Besides "Captain" there is another word for the person in charge of a vessel, that word is "Master". Take advice, listen to others, but in the end, you are the Master of the vessel. Listen to your inner voice. You'll be fine.

Marty... you are a good captain and you care. That is more than I can say for a lot of captains out there. That is not a bad ding... I have crunched up my boat as well several times. That was terrible weather and it is not too bad of a call to go into a marina in winds like that. Don't be too hard on yourself. You are absolutely cut out for this Journey. You will make a great video of the fiberglass repair and even if the paint does not match perfectly you will always have the story to tell and the knowledge gained. Keep on the path and Please Please stop by Saint Simons Island and Morningstar Golden Isles Marina on your way north so I can buy you a few beers!!! I will catch the lines for you and make sure you have a crunch-free stay!!! Great fishing here...

Dude I know that racked your nerves and I’m so glad it all worked out but Bro you threw that dock line like a Boss! Your caution is your friend. Never forget that! I have NEVER said “whoa I almost died because I was being to cautious” but I have said a hundred times “I should not have listened to him and should have followed my own instincts “. That does mean my friend is dumb or a bad person. It just means I am smarter than I give myself credit for. YOU are the Captain as you said. Trust yourself because only you know what’s truly at stake!

white gorilla tape. Z's vids impact as 'stream of consciousness live'; they can be linear, they are raw like the oceans, but that frankness can over-emphasize points. I think that you're right on brother Z, as is Mike as well. Mike is experienced & so wise, he is floating bedrock. In adventure, things are often half-ablaze as a norm - it is wholly appropriate. In that complicated thing, one strives to make the best choices & even they can sting. Thanks for showing us that truth, that they can and do. Caught in that weird-assed time, you saved everyone. It didn't turn worse. That is always, in these inevitable gravest extremes, what captains must strive to do. It is why some captains are regarded as heroes. white gorilla tape. There's a super-underwater variety as well but white gorilla tape is awesome. I use it to mitigate wear on the rub areas of the pedal boat that I converted to electric :)

I felt it in your voice, it took me straight back to my experience when I’d ventured out early in the morning without heeding the forecast and, on my return, found myself in the marina with a gigantic squall hitting me. My 32’ Carver Mariner had full canvas up which didn’t help. I got myself into the marina dock between other boats but could not keep control of direction. It was raining hard, blowing like crazy and people on the dock were trying to help by shouting instructions,,,,,,,, no matter what i did the boat and wind were in control. It’s the moment you start to wonder if this is what you really want to be doing. Eventually I managed to get the boat pointing at my slip and, with a following cross wind I had to gun both engines to get my nose in far enough for the slip sides to catch me, then, hard reverse to stop before going through the slip end. It’s a sobering experience but only going through it can you learn. No amount of “experts” on the dock can really help until they have your lines in their hands. I think you did well Marty.
