On the topic of reparations I think everyone agrees more Egyptians need to be involved in the study and preservation of these artifacts.

Egyptians have indeed been so greatly involved in the study and preservation of our cultural heritage. We’ve opened two new state of the art museums in Giza and Cairo replete with Egyptian archaeologists , conservators, and other highly trained experts and specialists.

I am stunned that the colours are original. They’ve lasted so long 😮 it’s painfully beautiful.

In fact this piece has been very informative about how ancient paints were made. Or at least what they were made of.

I guess! It's a sculpture. A work of statuary.

It really is a wonderful work of art & historical interest- I hope that in my lifetime we see more antiquities being repatriated, perhaps with display of replicas in the museums which had prior custody (which in this case would fit well into sharing the theory that the bust was made as a guide!)

It is a bit sad that there are Egyptian museums with replicas of articles that are elsewhere!

As a proud Copt, we want our looted icons of ancient Egypt, Nefertiti’s bust, the Rosetta Stone, and the Dendera Zodiac repatriated and rightfully showcased in our $1.1 billion palace of a museum, the GEM, Grand Egyptian Museum. The GEM is the world’s largest museum dedicated to a single civilization, the second largest museum overall after the Smithsonian.

Out of interest, do you draw any kind of line between antiquities given and antiquities taken?

@@ljones2087As an example, The British Museum has recently repatriated the looted Benin Bronzes back to Nigeria, their region of origin. They most certainly could return the Rosetta Stone back to Egypt as well!

@@ArmchairEgyptology Sorry, to respond so late to your comment. In short , I personally draw no such distinction. This is a powerful opportunity for European and other foreign museums to demonstrate moral leadership, and to choose to follow moral principle over profit and support the healing of the wounds inflicted by colonial powers. I urge everyone who believes in the right of cultural identity, the right of equality among nations, and the inalienable right of each sovereign state to enjoy their own heritage and reclaiming that heritage whether it has been taken or “given” to them by non ethnic Egyptian governments. I’m looking at you France with the twin Luxor Temple obelisk at La Place de la Concorde. That obelisk was “gifted” by Muhammad Ali Pasha, the ethnic European , Albanian , governor and the de facto ruler of Egypt from 1805 to 1848.

The story of articles such as the Benin bronzes and the Parthenon marbles is very different to the story of the Rosetta Stone, at least!

In lieu of a Queen, do the Germans mind if the Misri get to mummify Angela Merkel and display her in the museum? I bet a lot of Geeks might want to come and spit on the glass case. It's only fair, you keep some artefacts and give some choice stuff back.

I actually think Ms Merkel is still alive and might have something to say about this idea!

@@ArmchairEgyptology she'll die eventually. What are they going to do with an old corpse anyway? I really don't think the first world will ever give anything back. Thats just not now it works, the museums are categorically shameless. If the British museum (aka the evidence locker) started giving back things it would just be Sutton Hoo and a couple of Roman artefacts. So, if it's all the same to the Germans, it's just going to be the body of an old dead Princeps, let the Misri have something nice of yours. And i do believe the Greeks would love to take the opportunity to express their feelings. I'm not Egyptian, btw, but they're our oldest allies.
