I actually read the whole book. I think the glamourization of Blizzard as a whole is very misguided as it's clear that even from day one there were internal issues. There is also a section about Kaplan's philosophy "crawl, walk, run" which for Overwatch it meant that for the first game they would focus on the pvp, for the second game they would focus on pve and story and finally for the third game they would focus on transitioning the game into an MMORPG. I think that Overwatch being born from the embers of Titan was actually the start of the problems. Titan had cost Blizzard 80 million and Team 4 was tasked to somehow salvage something. From the very beginning they had a vision for Overwatch and didn't realize that they needed to continue to develop and innovate the game they and the one the fans wanted rather than sticking with their original vision. We loved OW1 and wanted more of that. By 2017 Team 4 was already thinking about OW2.

@Rippies3 ай бұрын
It's the problem that their engagement in gaming news clearly starts at 2014 or 2016 and beyond. Halo arguably breached gaming into the mainstream and League popularized esports well before OW. Lootboxes were popularized with CSGO and TF2 or even arguably the gacha mechanic from Maplestory. It's just bad gaming history on their part.

TLDR; - It's not fair to criticize Kaplan without hearing his side and being objective - PVE games are easier to add PVP to but PVP games are much harder to turn into PVE games - OW2 should have been a hero-based looter shooter DR: I think it's not fair to jump to any conclusions about how things went without hearing Kaplan's side on this. Hearing the story from those who stayed and benefited from Kaplan's departure seems a bit shady to me. Considering how big the PVE was supposed to be, it seems like Overwatch 2 was forced to be a replacement of OW1 instead of being a separate game. When you look at what it takes to make successful PVE game, there are a lot of things that have to go right: atmosphere, lighting, character progression, solid enemy AI, and more. OW2 was doomed to fail because it was forced to also incorporate the PVP components. It's very difficult to make a PVP game into a PVE game, but it is much easier to create a PVE game first, then add PVP elements. Games like Destiny and Warframe prove that trying to make a PVE game into a PVP game is a herculean task. It's a nightmare to balance without stripping away all of the character progression and focusing purely on the core gameplay which could work in theory. The point I'm making here is that OW: PVE would have been a great stand-alone title if it didn't cannibalize OW1. Both games could have continued to exist with separate balancing strategies and then when the eventual 3rd game would come out they can see how they can blend the two components to make a game that was really interesting. I don't think the story of OW: PVE is over yet and I think the game still has a lot of potential to realize the vision they had from the beginning if they can be humble.

47:42 Spilo is correct here. OW just doesn’t make sense as a PvE game. Destiny makes sense for PvE. They would’ve had to make OW into some kind of Destiny-lite type of game. Could that work? Maybe after years of development and iteration plus environment and encounter design. But trying to pigeonhole the PvP cast directly into a PvE game was bound to fail IMO. Even just from an art direction standpoint I don’t think OW PvE would be very appealing … and they have the best art in the PvP space.

It did make sense imo. They spent an entire blizz con talking about it. I know we all forgot. Basically the anniversary events but longer with more dept. However the new engine was giving them issues at the start. Plus the BP was the #1 first priority.

" Maybe after years of development and iteration plus environment and encounter design." So maybe after..... what they had. They literally had 4 years before ow2 launched and 6 seasons of ow2 developing it lol. When you guys say "maybe if they had years" THEY DID. They've literally started working on this 6 years ago or some thing lol. Its completely reasonable for them to make a "destiny lite" in that time frame, the ONLY problem is how the projects were managed. Any other "pve doesn't make sense for overwatch" "it was a stupid idea" is 100% absolute bs. They had the time and resources to make a great pve, for some reasons we probably will never really have the full picture they failed completely at that. Maybe its Jeff, maybe it was covid, maybe it was work from home, maybe it was Kotick. Its easy to criticize jeff for not wanting to bring more people onto the team when they clearly needed more people, but you don't know what bringing more people would actually look like under activisions boot. Maybe they would not know wtf is going on just be hired to shit out low effort content. I do with agree with you it was foolish to just make the current pvp team start working on the pve with o maintenance team for overwatch 1 but spilo is just simping for the current devs so he can keep doing his little interviews trying to push all blame off onto jeff when we don't have the full story just some book from some random guy trying to push a narrative (yes jason's book is literally pushing a narrative freedo even says it himself the book was written to show that "its more complicated than we think, you cant just blame X or Y person" aka all the evidence he got had to purposefully be moulded to fit that narrative, he is biased and rather than benefitting from just unbiased showing the evidence and unfiltered truth he is seeking to diretly profit off of pushing a specific narrative, not saying everything he says is bs just needs to be taken critically)

I can understand Jeff's vision for adding PvE in OW2. Many people, even the outsiders who don't play the game, love the IP due to the universe it sets in and most importantly, the heroes. He wanted to create a game that tells the story for these heroes and the universe, to add more depth to them that the players can experience. I would've wanted that, it's the main reason that I stuck with the game because I really love the heroes in this game. Most favorite out of all is Tracer for me. It feels amazing to see heroes developments throughout Overwatch lifespan. The heroes is what makes Overwatch...Overwatch. I would really want to see more efforts for these to the heroes we have now which is why a show is necessary. Obviously it has to be good like LoL's Arcane and Cyberpunk's Edgerunner for example.

I'll be honest, I was pretty livid to hear that they actually had the opportunity to expand into multiple teams working on Overwatch and actively rejected it. When Keller first opened up about the crawl, walk, run philosophy, he massively underplayed how much hubris this team had, thinking they could support all the things _they wanted to do_ while insisting on doing it with one team.
@buffhorses36323 ай бұрын
And if they had multiple teams and the focus and creativity wasn't there we would have complained that there were too many too cooks in the kitchen. The more variables you put into an equation the more chances you have for something to fail or lose the original vision. Imo the original sin of overwatch was they wanted to make game hard then easy. Going from dive meta to moth to goats was what drove people away from the game, not brought more people into the game. The numbers show it. I've always said that the exact point in time when the game started going down was the when mercy got reworked in season 6.
@Mikuroko693 ай бұрын
Im surprised during the "rushed development" part of the discussion, no one talked about the fact that there was literally only 3 new heroes on launch... And 2 of them were playable in the beta leaving only 1 of the 3 go be completely new. That should've been a clear dead giveaway that this game was unpolished and unfinished.

The majority of the questions around the game's content dealt w/cosmetics and what kept me playing at that time was cosmetics because honestly, that was the only content ow had going for it. The move to 5v5 make support have to play more aggressive in damage to win. Healbotting is boring, and you have Lifewever/Mecy who are more focused to that anyway. I'd disagree with Spilo on ow pve. If I remember his background correctly, overwatch is his first shooter game. I on the other hand prior to ow had a vast experience playing many different shooter, mainly pve, games. I didn't play junkenstein when it first cam oute. But Uprising was one of the best pve experiences I've ever had. Hard to beat, perfectly balanced around characters, requiring teamplay. The only people saying it was bad can be people that don't like pve in general. Then the experiences go downwards. Retribution was not as good but held the mark. Uprising event was rerolled but it wasn't the same, because throughout the year there were balance changes to the heroes and the mission itself was not changed accordingly. What I am saying is that maybe some of these guys played these missions a year/years later so you should take these opinions with a grain of salt.

I don't get why they had the "hide hero swap on scoreboard for 15 seconds". 15 seconds is a veeery long time. If they want this change maybe have it at 5s or 10s MAX. Like sam brings up. Some heroes will get a huge advantage from this change like widow and sombra. Sure it changes the tank matchup so you have to pick a "safe" tank that won't get hard countered but I don't know if it will help the gameplay experience.

Major thoughts: The T500 changes suck. Simply put. It's aimed at thinning out the alt accounts taking up space on the leaderboard, but this is better solved with more active decay removing them from the list automatically as they aren't played on. 750 lifetime wins is a lot, and I have friends that are current top500 sitting in GM2/gm1 that have 400 lifetime wins on their main account, with 100 or so lifetime on each alt that they have. These people will not be eligible for top500, even though they'll be playing with everyone else in top500, they just won't be rewarded for their effort (on their main account) and have already talked about quitting the game over this. There are also plenty of questions to ask.. if I am newish to the game, put a focused effort into comp, learning and growing as a player, and get to champion rank, I can't be on the top500 leaderboard simply because I haven't been around long enough to rack up 750 lifetime competitive wins? Take myself for example - I play on average 3-400 games per season, I win roughly 55% of those games putting me at 220 wins for one season. It would take me four seasons to be eligible for top500 at that rate, which is an average of 7 games per day every day with no breaks throughout the season. Hero swaps: This does not solve the issue, and actually does the opposite of what they want which is safeguarding the counterswapper. This is less of an issue the higher up you go, but more of an issue in gold/plat/diamond where people meta sweat super hard and genuinely counterswap on cd. Most players lose a fight, and will think they should swap heroes instead of reevaluating how they are approaching fights. You will often see this where one tank will die and immediately swap, the second tank will win the fight and retreat to spawn and counterswap the swap. It's frequent enough that I'm confident in saying it's occuring in at least 30% of my games diamond and lower. This change helps the counterswapper by not allowing the opposing tank to counterswap the counterswapper, making this current strat unviable, and adding power to the counterswapper, who is now protected for 15 seconds. This also does not fix the issue of counterswapping every death, which is the more serious issue. This prevents a niche case of toxic gameplay loop that occurs very rarely.

I think an avenue for Sombra that should be explored is her 4th wall break potential. For example, instead of outright blocking ability usage, hack could interfere with the information given to the hacked player regarding their abilities. Your health bar gets hacked, your cooldown timers, etc. all get the Sombra treatment to reduce information players have at their disposal, whilst not removing them from the board entirely. The visuals can also be a source of anxiety for hacked players as well. The mind games involved for Sombra players improves also as they need to choose their hack timing to coincide with the target hero's cooldown timers.
@chukadoo18713 ай бұрын
this is much funner than just turning off abilities. my idea was randomizing the ability keys. hack should make the player vulnerable, but taking away abilities just isn't fun, especially when the hacker -is near undetectable and- has high follow-up potential. oh she's not permavisible anymore, that's great, but hacks still never been in a good spot

36:00 So why make a career out of it? If you know that they weren't interested in a competitive side for the game, why would anyone even continue in that direction? It's the same with Dead by Daylight, BHVR tried one and made it obvious afterwards that they aren't interested in taking the game in that direction, so why do people still try to make something out of it? Sounds like a player problem to me.

Damn Spilo and SVB nailed the Samito impression. SVB's facial expressions were on point lmfao. For the patch notes it's mostly disappointed, most of them are underwhelming and don't address the characters' issues in a fun and thoughtful way. The Sombra rework is not really the direction I wanted for her, she's just gonna be even more assassin oriented with less utility. Reducing hack's duration means nothing because the hack + virus combo is still her biggest strength.

Jeff wanted to lower the skill requirement because he wanted to bring in a new wave of non-FPS veterans to beef the player numbers, similar to how in 2016 a ton of people who didn't play shooters or only played them casually fell in love with the game. Samito's complaint is coming from a pro's perspective who doesn't care about popularity of the game as long as the game is tailored to their requirements. Jeff's ideas are coming from a place where moving more units and having more players is more important than pleasing the 1%. No wonder Samito hated him. I also can't believe that people say "There's no way you can't be free to play" when a cosmetics store can be implemented no matter if you pay for the game or not and still make money hand over fist. Pros don't buy skins, casuals do.
@noahodum97373 ай бұрын
This has been disproven with research, on average higher skilled players who devote more time to the game spend more money on each game by about 40%. There are just usually a lot more casual players than hardcore players. A casual paying 20$ for a battlepass and maybe a skin every few months is nowhere close to the hardcore player buying the BP every season and every major skin release or collaboration pack. It's orders of magnitude larger spend per player as a function of time spent playing the game.

Aaron Kellar confirmed during the "Hero Mode is dead" blog post that the PvE didn't do well during internal and limited external playtesting. No one liked it enough to release. It was simply not fun; is the feedback they got.

@thepoofster2251 They said the same thing about 6v6. Don't believe anything this dev team says. The feature was good. Yes you will have a leaver. But that also happens in game. But I can tell you that ANY game with a team full of mics trying to actually communicate is a WAYYYYYYYY better experience for the user. And arguably how the game is meant to be played. Rather than this solo dolo type of behavior the community seems to believe is the right play. Hence pro teams being way better than comp teams. 🎤 ⬇️

Freedo hardly talked and decided to play on his phone several times. Seems like an uninterested or distracted guest. Was excited to see the cast, flop episode though. One of freedo's go-to arguments is that the community "needs to change their perspective on this one" or "The community doesn't know what an optimal counterpick is". Furthermore, how rude is it when you're having a conversation with others sit and listen to you, the second another person opens their mouth you cackle with laughter and bury your face in your phone.

I’m going to continue to comment on this until someone gives me a valid answer. Why the fuck are we so obsessed with Netflix? Literally there are so many other platforms that could host a wide variety of tv or film series for the Blizzard games. Just look at HBO with the Last of Us or Prime with Fallout. Not only that of it was an issue of money or getting funding for releasing something on their platforms. Blizzard Entertainment Studios literally still exists to this day. It has done absolutely nothing since it’s inception. Why are those people on payroll? They literally have producers from Disney and Stacy Sher literally produced Tarantino films. They can literally make them themselves and sell it later in a festival circuit if they have to. I’ve been in the film industry for 10 years. Corpa lawsuits is no excuse for this clear un interest for having a tv or film series for Blizzard IPs.

btw if you want to hire a new team for a already late project - look into the wiki for brooks law second - nobody will optimize their heroes although they are champ - cause everybody makes fails its kinda insane and stupid (sorry to say that) and also ignorant if freedo says all the players not optimize their heroes (but he not)

Perhaps I misread the thing about Jeff rejecting the extra employees, because the impression I got was that Bobby wanted to beef up the crew, because he wanted Call of Overwatch, a yearly cash grab, and Jeff was resisting THAT. I'm not sure how resisting shovel ware makes him a bad guy. I'd rather OW die outright than become some shitty yearly filler shooter game, personally.
@rizaadon3 ай бұрын
Overwatch 2 is basically the same as that though, it might not be releasing a "new game" every year but it's the same slop "content" (skins)... and it exists this way because Jeff and the old team couldn't let go of Titan. Overwatch 2 being released early and the PvE getting cancelled also happened because Jeff didn't want to expand the dev team and they couldn't justify keeping Overwatch live since it wasn't making any money... because there was no content and shit balance due to there being no dev team to focus on its development...

There is a section in the book that details that team 4 was worried about overwatch becoming annualized. One big issue with Overwatch was that it was a game made at a company that one: always released games when they were ready rather than sticking to a hard deadline, and two: for the most part followed up with sequels. Ow2 missed 2 deadlines apparently. 2020 and 2021 although 2020 didn’t seem like a hard deadline. Samito more or less said it. The game was doomed to failed. Either corporate greed would milk it dry or misguided passion would take the game to places that fanbase never wanted. The latter is obviously what happened.
