took this tram ride earlier today, it is a cable driven system and is smooth but being open sided can get a bit chilly. well worth a visit.

Just saw this on "Escape to the Country" episode. Pretty cool!!

What's not clear from the video is that the system is split into two systems. You get off one tram, walk through the midway station and complete the journey on an identical tram either going up or down from that point. No glass in the tram windows for no obvious reason (apart from Welsh hardiness!)

What an interesting line! It's a bit like a gripper-less version of San Francisco's California lines. Why do these cars appear to have trolley poles?

"Prior to the introduction of radio control in the 1990’s, the trolley poles were used to maintain a telegraph link with the control unit at the halfway winding house." Source: www.greatorme.org.uk/tramway.html

How does one get back to the starting point?

Just run the system in reverse.

Nice. Is this electrical powered or battery powered? I can't see any electrical cable posts along the tramline.

mancunian4life86 Both sections are cable worked (from electric motors at the middle and top). You can see this for the upper section, but for the lower section the cables are hidden in the 'slot', this is necessary as it runs along a public road for most of the way. Technically it is a funicular railway.
