Freddies's credo was The Entertainment, he could gratify here all his demands for "playing theater". And he did it well, you laughed. 🤣 The lyrics summarizes his life amazingly, could have been written about Freddie.

The Platters was wonderful and Freddie did the song justice, he did it great. Freddie was so different off stage, he was very very shy, eccentric, Roger said Freddie couldn't enter a room of strangers without a friend with him because of his shyness. Great reaction

I usually go with the original but with Freddie, he always wins with me! So much more entertaining and the song does fit his life perfectly!

The original version is good and pleasant to listen to but definitely that 50's sound. I do prefer Freddie's version--his offers more power and poignancy and the video some great humor. And knowing about Freddie's life and death and personality it just resonates more. I've read that his intention was an album of covers but he was distracted from that by the Barcelona project instead.

I wouldn't call it a good cover but it was a great Freddie Mercury performance.

100% the original wins in my book. Any guy old enough to remember the movie Mischief from the 80’s knows why this is the better version. Lol

At least it made you laugh! I think that was the goal. But behind the light there is shadow... and a certain lucidity. At this point in his life Freddie knows he is ill...

So, I made an error.... it was the winter of 1955 when I bonded with The Platters' latest hit.! I graduated in 1959. The system will not let me edit my 'error'...Bah Humbug.

I have always loved this song by the Platters …..But Freddie steals my heart every time…… yes the video was over the top, it was so Freddie …and I loved it. But just listen to him sing it ……without watching the video…… his voice is hard to beat. Nice reaction…..I’m glad you like it. Thanks

"The Great Pretender" is the Platters' signature song and the classic Platters sound is very much in the mold of that song. I wouldn't really call it Doo-Wop/R&B as it feels more like a blend of that style with a dash of '50s Era Sinatra Easy Listening. The group had a rather tumultuous history post 1959 after the 4 male members of the original group got busted on drug and prostitution charges. The group splintered quite a bit and had a ton of legal troubles over the years. The '60s iteration of the group hewed more towards contemporary (for the time) soul/R&B. Anywho, I've heard the Freddie Mercury version a time or two before and I wouldn't say it's better than the original but there's more of his personality and autobiography that he brings to the performance that gives the song more substance. I definitely never seen the video before. "Over the top" is putting it mildly. It feels like a parody of his entire career and it's quite intentional on his part. I don't think TOO many people knew the deeper meaning of it all at the time but knowing his life today this was definitely him baring a part of his soul in a dramatic way.

There are a lot of things in the original such as the cadence that I can hear in Queen songs. Freddie was definitely influenced by the platters.
