Rick and Morty returned with "Mort Dinner Rick Andre”, a really solid episode that gives fans some interesting questions about the rest of season 5. Will Jessica's change stick? How does Mr. Nimbus know Rick's wife Diane? Either way, the episode was really funny.

One of the few episodes to portray Rick as completely whipped. He wasn't on top at all in this episode, which is pretty interesting. It was also cool to see Jerry and Beth not fighting for once but instead their relationship being used in a comedic way. I hope they continue that kind of thing this season as a nice change of pace.

My guess is they might nerf Rick a lot this season as a way to reflect his new low status within the family dynamic after the stuff that went on in the Season 4 finale. He ended up getting pretty battered for the last few episodes of that season too, and I doubt it's just to appease the people who think he's too OP.

I like that this episode had the overarching theme along the lines of "we are slaves to our pasts". Rick and Nimbus are trapped in their rivalry, hating each other because that's what it's been for so long, and even when they escape that rivalry, their actions that were a consequence to their past rivalry reignites it. Jerry and Beth are sort of trapped in their history of relationship troubles and are desperate to break free from it by proving that they really love each other, which is, on one hand, successful as they pretty much do, but the point of needing to prove it shows they're still slaves to their past. Morty has been partially defined by his infatuation with Jessica since episode one, but that well has gone dry so they needed to push him out of that. While Morty keeps trying to free himself of his past and present with Rick just so he could live a life and be with Jessica, he keeps getting pulled back, and Jessica gets pulled into it and truly does live a life without Rick and Morty and becomes completely changed, and so she is no longer an option as a love interest, the only real character who found agency and broke free of her past (as an object of Morty's desires), and now she'll free to be more like a friend character. Morty is still trapped in the same cycle of life with Rick, showing that the opening scene is seemingly what it'll be forever with them, he only really breaks free from his romantic connection with Jessica (maybe, we can't really tell if he really respected her decision or if he'll just return to seeing her as the object of his desire). And finally, the best example and pretty much the thematic statement, the macrocosom of the whole story, is the other world. Time moves far quicker so we can see how every generation is influenced by the last, how each new father informs their son of the way things are, how traditions are formed and priorities are maintained. Even those trying to break free of the influence are inherently doing so because of the influence, and even when they do escape that past (wizard guy slaying the royal family and rejecting Morty), the actions of the civilization's past (pissing Morty off generations before for them but seconds before for him) comes back to bite them in the ass (Morty returning to massacre them all). And in the end, when they finally accept that they don't know or understand and they just want it put behind them, they are merely lost, as it has defined them for so long. We are all slaves to our past. I think this episode is gonna age like a fine wine.

I feel like it is the perfect development of rick. At season one, he knew that, no matter what he does, he won't care. He had a daughter that welcomes him even after so much time, he had morty who was with him no matter what. Now, as characters changed rick is much more alone. He finnaly have to face the consequences of his actions. And he don't want to run away. Take, for example season one. Even if he literally destroyed the world, he could just go to another (episode with love potion for morty). Now, he sees how he can no longer escape. Or just don't want to. It made for fun escapism since we all want that sense of complete control over a situation. @@ultimadum7785 I think that is true for some characters like Boba Fett but not all characters. We don't need a full back story but when things from Rick's past continually show up and they keep hinting, I think it actually would service the show and be interesting if they explored his backstory a little. Not a complete run through but maybe about Nimbus and Rick's relationship, how Dianne ties into it, how she dies and why he left in the first place. I think the reason why they haven't is because Morty actually is Rick (as we can see him be more Rick than ever in this episode) and he ends up causing some loop that creates the story. I'm guessing that will be the final reveal of the show, but hey.... THAT'S JUST A FILM THEORY😎

Rick’s relationship with nimbus is fascinating not only because the dynamic of respect and hints of a former lover quarrel, but because it seems that he was a part of Rick’s life before he even became the inter dimensional space outlaw we know him as, because it happened on earth while he was still married. It was before he disappeared for 20 years to battle the gromfllomites, and presumably before he even met squanchy and Bird Person. I imagine at that point Rick was more of a Tony stark/Elon musk type figure than the seemingly omnipotent character we know him as. Rick might’ve even been jealous of nimbus and maybe that’s what drove him to discover inter dimensional travel. Or maybe I’m just reading too much into it.

What you’re missing here about the episode is why Namor vs Mr Fantastic and why they would use that in this episode. The point is power through science vs power through magic. The fact that Nimbus is able to help them at the end is to illustrate that Rick’s science isn’t always the be all and end all sometimes unexplainable things can make the difference which obviously Rick would hate. That’s why Nimbus and Namor are such great foils to Rick and Reed Richards.

Infinite realities being what they are, Rick’s relationship with Mr. Nimbus seems to fall into the category of strangely constant forces across all timelines... “Every Rick has a vat of acid, Morty!” Or, since they hop around from reality to reality, this might just mean that finding a version of Earth with a Mr Nimbus who has canonical backstory with Rick (and Diane) is part of Rick’s criteria for finding a new reality to call home... most of Rick’s friends are just family, but he chooses to keep Nimbus as his arch-nemesis despite seeming ashamed and embarrassed by him.
