I've been lucky enough to see a lot of great bands and classic concerts, including the Rolling Stones, U2, Adele, Bruce, Springsteen, Eagles, Billy Joel, The Who, Elton John, The White Stripes, Linkin Park, the Kings of Leon, Emerson Lake and Palmer, Styx, Rush, Edgar Winter, the Electric Light Orchestra, Chicago, Deep Purple, Rush and even Roger Waters' The Wall ... but Pink Floyd's performance at Ivor Wynne Stadium on June 28, 1975 will always remain THE GREATEST CONCERT EVER in my mind.
Why? It was the perfect night, an amazing setting and a great set of music by a band at the height of their creativity. It was both raw and polished. It was the final night in North America on the yet-to-be-released "Wish You Here" album tour. It was the last time they would play "Echoes" and "The Dark Side of the Moon" in its entirety for a North American audience. We were also treated to songs that they were still working on that you had to be there to hear it in that form.
But I think partly what made it so great for me (other than the experience of getting there and getting in to the show), was that it really was two concerts by one band. The first concert was by a band of musicians that were jamming out tunes together, and that didn't give a shit if the audience was there or not. Very cool to see Pink Floyd in this mode, outside in the bright evening sunlight. The second concert was the full rock concert experience, happening in the dark, with a lightshow, lazers, explosions, the classic spotlight on a disco ball, dry ice, smoke bombs, film projects and of course, an airplane that crashes onto the stage.
I've remastered the audio, from an original DAT tape, to provide greater stereo separation, more realistic EQ and all the more modern mixing techniques (compression, limiting, etc.). For the visual, since there is no video of this concert, for the first set, I told the story of my personal experience while displaying stills from the concert. For the second set, I used the 1975 Pink Floyd touring film that played on the circular truss screen for the North American of their tour. Finally for the encore, "Echoes", I synced up the audio performance with their classic Pompeii no-audience performance.
Please enjoy what, to me, was THE GREATEST CONCERT, EVER!

I was there! I live in Hamilton and was 16. My buddy Kevin and I had no money and were big fans of DSOTM as well. When we got there Kevin says I'm going in, jumps the turnstiles and dissapears into the crowd. I start looking for a way in, find some people getting boosts to go over the fence in the west side where the bleachers were. I get in, go into the bleachers and look towards the area where Keving got in. I see him going up the stairs, whistle real loud (I make a distinct whistle noise). He looks over, spots me and comes over to join me in the bleachers (oposite end from the stage). We sit there for the whole show, people just pass joints down the line to us all night! Amazing show, we still talk about it to this day.

I was at this show. My first “big” concert! How spoiled. I thought all shows were like this. It was two weeks before my 17th Birthday! I was there overnight, the night before! I was there at Gate 5 when it was “crashed” I watched the show from the 50yd line, ten rows up, stage left. This record and concert set the “tone” for the rest of my life! Im 65 as I type this. May all of you have musical experiences like this! I ended up spending many many years in the music biz, in Canada - so blessed! Such a great time to “grow up”. At my funeral, “Time”, and “Great Gig in the Sky”, will be played - as well as Warren Zevon’s “Keep me in Your Heart” Then, I’ll be gone forever - but I’ll leave a thought with you! (from my home, now, near Kelowna BC) Peace

This brings a memory. I wasn’t aware of this concert until the mid 2000’s. The story is bittersweet, but one I fondly remember. I was working as a sales engineer and needed to make a quick trip to a customer to resolve an issue with some equipment. I needed a quality guy to come with, and the manager chose Tommy. We left at 4 in the morning for a long drive east of Green Bay Wisconsin. There are a couple things you need to know about Tommy. Number one, he had a very rough life. He survived childhood cancer and two more rounds as an adult. Number 2 he was a HUGE fan of both the Green Bay Packers football team, and Pink Floyd. So as we started our trip I showed him where my CD’s were and told him you choose the tunes on this trip. Now I have pretty much all of the Floyd’s major releases, but none of the obscure stuff. I like the band a lot, heck I bought dark side when I was 16 in 76 or 77 as my first introduction. But really I’m a casual fan. Not Tommy. He gave us a running commentary on all the songs that played as we drove through the early morning darkness. He knew all the back stories of the songs and their evolution along with who was doing what. I was amazed at his knowledge. We then got to the customers around 9, did our business, and headed back. It was still early so I asked if he wanted to have a bit of fun. Remember he was a huge Packers fan? In the mid 2000’s they renovated the stadium in Green Bay with a new Pro shop, hall of fame etc. it was the off season so no player activity, but we went and did the full tour of the place. He had been to games before the renovation but not after. It was tough because he was sick so much and didn’t have much money. So we had a blast on the tour, a nice dinner afterwards, and all on the company dime. We got on the road late for the long drive back with Tommy manning the tunes when Sheep came on. That is when he told me about how the song had evolved over time and how they played it as a different song in the early years. I also remember him telling about this very concert and how it was the best concert ever. He said he had the original quad bootleg vinyl of it, and that I had to come over to his place to listen to it. Well as life goes, I regretfully never did that. I moved on to a different company in the early 2010’s, but would stop and say hi from time to time. Unfortunately cancer being the bastard it is, took Tommy shortly after. He was a young man in his early 40’s but it seems the disease just had it out for him. He did always say how much he enjoyed our day together and how much it meant to him. I’m not sure how this video came to the top of my youtube recs tonight, but MAN all I can think of is Tommy while I watch this and think of what a gentle and kind soul he was. I hope he knew that long day was special to me also. Shine on Tommy. I hope we get to meet in the sky someday where cancer doesn’t exist and we can sit down and listen to this concert together. Till then…

I saw PF in Liverpool, England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 in November 1974. They played a very similar set list to this concert, which was pretty brave of them as none of the audience had a clue about “ Raving & Drooling” or “ You Gotta Be Crazy”! Then they walked off stage fir a 15 minute break/ smoke a joint and came back to play DSOM straight through. “ Echoes” was the encore of course. Then I saw them at Knebworth in July 1975 and they added “ Shine On You Crazy Diamond” to the other unfamiliar songs. Awesome lights and film behind the band. Never saw them again though!!

I was at this show with my friend Merv. We were 15 years old and we had a spot in the middle on the floor about maybe 50 feet from the stage. Amazing concert. My favorite concert of all time. During Echoes they blew up the rest of the pyrotechnics and damaged the scoreboard and windows in homes in the area. After they finished and took a bow, they had a pie fight on stage. It was the end of the tour and last time Dark Side of the Moon was played with all four original members on North American soil. Plus we heard early versions of songs that would appear on Animals. And then they performed Shine on You Crazy diamond with Have a Cigar in the middle. The music was not yet released so the first set was all new stuff. I remember the big spiral flowery mirror ball they rolled out on a track. I remember the sun was behind us and shining off of it which created a cool visual before it got totally dark. Before they started Dark Side, they played the heartbeat in surround sound around the stadium slowly getting louder and louder and the crowd starting getting louder and louder until they began Breath. As the sun set they played all of DSOTM then Echoes for an Encore.

I absolutely love the album particularly the Great Gig in the Sky. I've seen Metallica, Rush, Kiss, Foofighters, Pearl Jam and many more since the Pink Floyd concert but nothing comes close to the great atmosphere of the Ivor Wynne concert. Great sound for a stadium. Perfect weather. Better sound than the 73 Dark Side show at the notorious Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto, famed for lousy fuzzy echo-y sound. The sax soloing in Echoes was shocking then but I get it now. Thanks for the detailed notes and images. Ah, the glorious seventies! Many great shows....,many.

I’m just shy of 59, so my discovery of Pink Floyd in 1977 meant I was 13 and too young to get permission to go to concerts even if I could have figured out a way to get from The San Fernando Valley to someplace like the LA (“Fabulous) Forum. But man, did I spend endless hours immersed in Animals, DSOTM, and Wish You Were Here. I’m lying here in bed listening to Shine, and imagining the crowd transfixed as they absorbed this masterpiece for the first time as a collective of passionate Floyd fans. It warms my heart just thinking about what that must have been like. And I’m hearing this song for, I don’t know, the 300th time?❤

OMG! Just ran across this and yelped out loud because I was at that concert. One of my most favorite of all time. I still tell people about it. Me and my friends also camped out the night before in front of Gate 5 and managed to find a spot around mid-field. I do like to explain to anyone who will listen that back at that time, using video as part of the stage show was all but unheard of. Seeing the video accompanying the songs was mind blowing (especially given our condition). And not to be contrary but I thought it was a "rocket", not an airplane that flew from the top of the far end of the stadium to crash into the stage during the playing "Dark Side of the Moon". Does anyone else remember it that way? The musicality that night cemented Pink Floyd, Dark Side of the Moon, and Echoes as all time favorites for me. An incredible night all around.

It also was general admission and most of us got there around past noon time. The show also was split in two parts: the first one being the Animals album in its entirety and sheep started the show. part two as you say was at night and had all the amazing visuals and props, they still had the round screen but Snowy white was added as stage guitarist with Gilmour. Totally agree. Have seen PF nearly a dozen times from '73 to '90s. Saw this tour @ Pittsburgh 3 Rivers Stadium, 8 days before this Hamilton, Ontario gig. The show WAS mind boggling. Having them float a pyramid inflatable over the crowd, with silvery moon slip from it into the sky on a full moon night... was an eye-opener, like the rest of the show. My girlfriend was feeling horrible - considered using a wheelchair to attend; she walked away at end on her own, beaming. If there's any show in my life I'd wish to have fully captured, this was it. Your running commentary is wonderful, as is the effort in blending shots and stills. I did the same thing on at least 2 gigs in smuggling that size cassette recorder in to a show. Thank you VERY much for sharing this experience. - it's a godsend to re-live that night. Bravo!

This is lovely. Appreciate the time you put into this and elaborating your Pink Floyd experience. I was a concert hound in the late 70's and went to dozens of rock concerts in Seattle. From small venues (Robin Trower) to medium venues (Elton John, Fleetwood Mac, The Eagles) to the kingdome (Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin). There is simply nothing today that compares to the freedom and power of shows in the 70's. People were just there to get stoned and drop into the music. I remember getting to the kingdome early for either Aerosmith or Led Zeppelin and I passed out standing in the heat waiting for the gates to open. We were squished together so tight I never hit the ground. A friend just kept me propped up until I came to. Ah, the good old days. I saw Pink Floyd in 81 for The Wall tour. I may go see Roger Waters in LA in October. I'll be taking my 26 year old daughter who loves Pink Floyd. Full circle! Echoes forever!

@@rhondaleahobrien3988 Us & Them was a cool concert ... very, very political in nature. At the end there was an explosion of paper messages blasted out into the audience. I was covered in pink paper and lots of it somehow landed in the pockets of my leather jacket. They are still there today and every time I wear that jacket, I reach into my pocket and see a little "RESIST" message and remember the concert.

Oh! yes I remember this one. This concert was on my birthday, my friends and I came up from Niagara Falls NY to find a stadium that sits right inside a residential area with houses facing a road which circles the stadium. The gates were not opened yet and the road and people's front yards were full of us druggies. The neighbors I could tell looked worried as they were all out in front of their house talking and being very friendly with the crowd. There was this one neighbor who invited us in and partied with us! Once the gates opened I remember how we just kept walking the circle inside the stadium outside the seating area before they opened the whole stadium. During this walk you could feel the excitement in the air that this was Pink Floyd and anyone could buy just about any drug they wanted. After inside I noticed the huge speaker columns seating on top of the stadium being in quad sound. Yes it was a great concert! And the neighbors, after the show they were harsh not even allowing us to sit on their front lawns to rest lol. C.D.

A Brit here, and a lifelong Floyd fan since 73/74 when DSOTM came out in England. My story is that at the age of 11, in 73 I shared a bedroom with my three older brothers, (we were so poor that we all slept in the one double bed) Dave, who was 18 at that time, had a STEREO record deck, and whatever my brothers played on in I had to listen to. I could hit the stadium grounds (now Tim Horton's field) with a four iron from where I live today. I was too young to go to the show, but I remember driving past, the day before the show, and all of the litter. The locals had people "tripping out" in their back yards. We lived on the top of the escarpment, 5 miles away, and had no problem hearing the concert. Still, I was 8 years old, so it meant nothing to me at the time. Now, it's a part of history. Hello. Mike from Sudbury, Canada. I took a Greyhound bus trip from Sudbury to Hamilton to see that great concert. I seen many Floyd concerts since then with Waters concerts Gilmour concerts. When the Floyd played Olympic Stadium in Montreal I rented my own Greyhound bus and went from Sudbury to Montreal and sold tickets and it was absolutely amazing. The only three people I didn't know on the bus was two and the bus driver. We even brought a friend that happened to be in a body cast. The bus driver told us we were leaving at a certain time and everybody had plenty of time to get to the bus. Well there was 1 person missing, Donny, the guy in the body cast. Like how do you lose a guy in a full body cast? The bus driver was getting a little peeved but I said you got to give the guy a few more minutes man I mean he's in Montreal and we are the only ones he knows. Well about 20 minutes later there is Donnie being carried by six or seven guys from Montreal. He was laughing his head off. We tried our best and succeeded to get most of him up in the luggage rack. 8 hours each way. Everybody loved every minute of it. Last summer my Bride and I went to see Waters in Montreal. The, this is not a drill tour. Having seen Floyd many times I felt there was something arye about this concert. I know what it was. It was just to damn depressing. I know what Waters rights about but this time it didn't resonant to well with me. A few months later my bride and I went and seen Nick Mason and a saucerful of Secrets tour. It was at Massey Hall in Toronto. It was absolutely great. I loved it I brought my Gazoo and got a Ovation myself while waiting in line to get a few beers. The encore was to mucking fuch. Syd's "THE BIKE SONG". This was a super concert and a super night. It all made up for the way I felt after Waters in Montreal. It was all older music but it seemed so fresh. Shine On...

I bought tickets from Records On Wheels in Sudbury when Records On Wheels was actually in a bus. I was the first one to buy a ticket and my buddy was the second one and a third great buddy who is no longer with us want a ticket from the local radio station. I knew the program director at the radio station and my buddy so happily won it for some reason he was the fifth caller. That was cool. So we get on a bus go to Hamilton and we head right to center field where we can hear the quad and yes there was some songs from animals that we were not used to. But hearing echoes which is a studio album done to a tee was excellent. The whole concert was excellent it was a party for pretty much 24 hours from we left Sudbury Hamilton and Back Again. Never forget it. When they toured the wall they did Olympic stadium in 76 and I rented a bus from Sudbury to Montreal and back. I made a few bucks we all had a great time there was only three people on a full Greyhound bus that I didn't know and one was the driver and two other people. Everybody pretty much partied at my house the night before so there was not much sleep. It was absolutely excellent and the bus driver even stopped at the beer store in Sturgeon Falls on the way home because we're all so hung over and f***** up we needed something. That was a concert and a half when Waters spit on a fan saying I'm trying to play a bloody song. Me and my bride seen Waters last year in Montreal with his this is not a drill album tour and it was okay but it just was not anything that I've seen him do before and I seen him do the wall and Dark Side of the Moon and etc etc I seen Gilmore to his versions and the one in Montreal with Waters wasn't all that great I guess. I'm babbling but I'm babbling Good Times. Also if anybody gets a chance to see Nick Mason do it. Went and seen him and a great band at messy Hall last year and yes I brought my Gazoo. The Encore was The Bike Song. The tour was called saucer full of secrets. It was excellent it was better than the waters concert in Montreal I tell you. Later Floyd heads

Rare rock n roll when bands still free formed and the creativity flowed. This is an amazing concert!!!

Great job Bud !! That was a helluva week. I saw Rush at Massey Hall on Wed. the 25th and I was at this concert on the Saturday. Unfortunately, being 17 and very foolish I took 3 hits of purple mic. and the only part I can remember was Echoes. Then trying to walk home from Hamilton to Scarborough was a whole `nother adventure ! PS. I could`ve swore this was 1976, I guess I lost a year somewhere!😒😄
