in his defence, if english does have a few 'rules', one would be that a short vowel comes before a double consonant-letter: 'hobbit' is an invented word but if Tolkien were to have written it 'hobit', people may have said 'hoe-bit' also, maybe it's how physicists forget basic formulas, like when you go to more complicated words, you get a feel for spelling that isn't based so much on memorising how every single word is spelt finally, english is extremely arbitrary, like how americans decided to write defence as 'defense' and 'spelt' as 'spelled'
