The problem is that it WAS a man's watch, a racer's watch, and it has turned into another bling talking piece. Rolex was a man's watch, an explorer's watch. Diver's watch. Now it is a fashion statement and this coming from a Rolex day Date Oyster owner.

Just to add some automotive insight, I was co-owner of a company that manufactured automotive woodwork. We were asked by Rolls-Royce to produce the dash and trim panels for a CUSTOM Rolls sports car. Rolls stated they would only make a minimum of 12 cars. The customer agreed and stated he would place a car in each of his homes around the world. They were all custom RR sports cars. RR kept their promise to the customer and then shipped the tooling to Bentley for a new sports model for them. Same car but it was not a "Rolls". We at least got the privilege to fabricate the wood components for this lovely automobile. We also did work for Jay Leno. TGV, I left you an entry in your "better than Starbucks" discussion on coffee. Enjoyed your vid.

To add to your video, Sir Malcolm Campbell was addressed by Ab Jenkins to make his high speed runs on the Bonneville salt flats. Sir Malcolm declined initially but later agreed resulting in breaking Daytona attempts by a significant margin. A film "the Boys of Bonneville" is available revealing this whole story. Ab and Augie Duesenberg collaborated and hand built the Mormon Meteor III which had Ab Jenkins in the record books until very recently. A truly fascinating story and history worth watching.

Great review, Tristano! While I am not normally a fan of yellow gold watches, this watch is absolutely, totally gorgeous! A bit blingy, yes, but so beautifully done in every aspect, both outside and inside. The only thing I dislike about this watch is the amount of printing on the dial, but I could certainly learn to live with that!😄 Ask your friend if he’ll loan it to me for a while; I promise to return it (if he can find me somewhere in Mexico!)😊

In 1994 I decided to get my first luxury watch. Did months of research and looked through the Rolex catalogue and decided the Daytona was the watch for me. Naive as I was, I walked into my local AD and told them I would like a Daytona. He smiled and then informed of how it works with Daytona’s and that I had a very, very long wait ahead. I bought a Submariner instead which I still have. Would still love a Daytona but the crazy prices means I doubt it will ever happen. Even if the expense wasn’t the issue, I’m never going to pay over list for anything.

The Rolex Daytona is one of the holy grail of watches for a serious collector. Then again , there are few Rolex models that could be considered to be "holy grails". Agree that the gold or two tone is more "blingy". I personally prefer the Stainless Steel models (White Panda dial or Black dial). Right now, the prices for the Daytona's are ridiculously high. And like some GMT'S, can take years to get. Do I want one? Sure, but not at these inflated rates. Still, I consider myself fortunate that at least I own a Submariner and Datejust 41 so not suffering. As always, entertaining video and nice intro.

Terrific episode, and something a little different. Well done, my friend. Enjoy the evolution of your channel. As for the Daytona, it's a beautiful timepiece. Great video. Sums up the Daytona perfectly.. Although everyone appears to miss out that Rolex originally were targeting NASA to use this watch on the Apollo missions. Hence the term Cosmograph appearing on the dial way before Daytona. However they lost out to the Omega Speedmaster. So only then did Rolex focus the watch on the race driver fraternity and after it was briefly called the Le Mans - Daytona was added to the dial named after Sir Malcolm Campbell Speed achievements on the beach. So although it wasn’t picked up for its the original role it was designed for; it ultimately found its niche in motor-racing. I recently bought the Black 116503 new from an AD. It’s my 5th Rolex and my grail - although the less popular two tone - personally; I adore it.

Excellent video TGV. Good background and history as always. Mr. X has acquired some nice treasures both for the wrist and four-wheel type. Amazing how popular the Daytona is today and question where it will be in the future. I agree with your review, what stood out most for me was the lacking of lume. As a substitute, which was remarkable was your wwc and the Dan Henry. Yes, my grail also is the Zenith El Primero. Striking piece indeed. Until the next show Sir. All the best. Good Gentry.

A true timeless classic with a great history. The Rolesor and Precious Metal Rolex Cosmograph oozes charm and poise. They heightened luxe to a whole new level. I have seen a 20 something fair lady wearing a ‘High’ Daytona and she manages to hold it very well on her wrist. If you own a pair, perhaps it can be a wonderful couple watch to wear to your next Formula 1 or motoring event.

TGV - I so agree with your comments in the end. These watches are way overpriced and over-hyped. And yes, the vintage Daytonas are far better. I wish Rolex would do some heritage models of the Daytona ... for under 10k. When it comes to racing however I think the more popular brand among the great drivers of the 60s and 70s was Heuer. Could you do a video on this? I did appreciate how you tied in the racing history behind the name of this watch. Well done, thanks!
