In week 12 of the 1984 NFL season, the Miami Dolphins played the San Diego Chargers. With the score tied at 28-28 in overtime, Chargers play caller Ernie Zampese accidentally sent in the wrong play; he was thinking one thing and accidentally said another, leading to mass confusion and a frustrated coaching staff. But somehow, this play that was never supposed to happen won the Chargers the game. This is the story behind the greatest and most beneficial mistake in Chargers history

I remember watching this as a 12 year old, and thinking the Chargers didnt stand a chance it was the Raiders next that the Dolphins had to worry about. Fouts kept them in the game with brilliant throws and then the run to win it was one of those "How the hell did that happen?" Come to find it was a wrong offensive call is just that more calling. Then to top it off the Raiders trucked the Dolphins 2 weeks later in the old Orange Bowl 45-34. The Dolphins 3 losses that year were all to California teams in San Diego, LA and San Francisco...go figure

I remember the Dolphins being the hottest team in the NFL at this point and Dan Marino the hottest football player in the NFL, No one expected the Chargers to win since they had been on a decline for a season and a half at this point. One person called this game accurately though. Jimmy the Greek said Fouts was a better QB and would win. I never saw the game, either it wasn't on in my Market or I was watching some NFC East game over on CBS because thats where I was focusing being a Redskins fan. However I recall Jimmy Greek predicting against the grain and getting this one right.

The Chargers did to the Dolphins what other teams had been doing to the Chargers over the previous few years: keeping the other team's offense off the field. No offense can score if the other team hogs the ball. The Chargers had the ball for almost 40 minutes.
