This guys sound not only comes from his fingers, he doesn't use nails. It is strictly the tips of his fingers flesh that roll off the strings giving him that unheard of beautiful tone. As a fingerstyle guitarist myself for 50 years, I have struggled to get this tone because even though I keep my nails short, the string comes off my nails making it brighter. There are no words to describe Chris Buck's talent!

This is directed at Chris, but certainly anyone is most welcome to chime in. Have you ever played the Yamaha RGX A2? It has a set of soapbar-sized mini humbuckers. They are lower in output, likely in the same range as P-90s. This guitar, and the equivalent bass, was Yamaha's experiment with making a lightweight, yet resonant body, which I feel they succeeded in doing. I enjoy playing it, but unfortunately haven't been able to compare it with other guitars.

As a home player, I find that P90s just kill it. Such bite and tone, and very little noise (due to lower volumes and relatively clean home power). P90s can give you "that" tone without the need to crank things. If you've not tried a P90 guitar, try the Indonesian-made Revstars. They're amazingly flexible, and the P90s are pedal-friendly.

Yes, they are. My '54 Goldtop is the best guitar I've ever played, too. Vintage P-90s do not carry the overblown price of vintage PAF Humbuckers (thank Zeus), but not because PAF's sound better, they don't. One reason for this insanity is that Clapron's Beano Burst had PAFS in it. Here's the ironic twist though, what he really wanted was a Goldtop with P-90s as he loved Freddie King's sound on that guitar. However, since that guitar was nowhere to be found across the pond in those days, he settled for a Burst with PAFS. On "Beano", his guitar tone on many tracks was EQed in the studio to emulate King's tone which is far more P-90-ish (more upper-mids and attenuated lower-mids), so Eric was satisfied, and so are we all.
