Round 8 truly is the final stage for the Rank wars arc, while Hyuse was able to hold on his own on 1 v 6, truly shows Hyuse that he is one to not be messed with. Also the plan to 2 v 1 on Ninomiya had to be changed since original Osamu wanted Hyuse and Kuuga to attack Ninomiya. Osamu had to adjust his plan on the key players to defeat Ninomiya. 2 v 1 was still the main key, also learning from Hyuse to not show your trump card till the last second. The final sec when Osamu used Hound was the biggest surprise that I have seen so far in Shounen. What I also like about this Round 8 is that no matter how much you plan, the plan will never follow through the end. Also with Chika pulling the trigger to protect Osamu was the gateway for her character development. World Trigger is one of the few series that makes me want to read the manga, rather than waiting for the anime to air on the big screen. Still sad that the final ep did not quite finish the rank wars arc. World Trigger top 5 series on my list.

He definitely is the greatest shonen underdog. He desperately evolved on perseverance, humitlity and knowledge. I get why some people were frustrated watching him, but you could see from early he knew he was never going to be the strongest but he set his goal to be as effective as possible. Constantly asking for guidance, developling strategies, studying logs , and with no random bs powerup or hidden power, this feels like a real relatable character. Thats how life is people are just born with different attributes and it shows just be the best at WHAT YOU CAN DO.

Thank Ashihara for creating Mikumo - a shounen protagonist who isn't a decendant of a supernatual creature, doesn't have a supernatural creature inside of him and doesn't get an op power/item at the start of the series. Just to be clear, I'm not bashing any of other shounens, they are all great in their own rights. It's just that sometimes you want to see someone weak overcoming the odds, outsmarting the opponents, utilizing limited resources to their gain... It doesn't have to be flashy, just smart (or at least not dumb). Unlike some series I've seen recently (mainy a certain sub-genre of fantasy known as isekai)

excellent video once again, I've thought about this for a while, a lot of my friends seemed to hate Mikumo, "he didn't bring results", "he was useless" they said, and this got me thinking about how Mikumo differs from other mc underdogs, and there are quite a few things: To illustrate take Naruto as an example, he is shown to be lacking when compared to his classmates in the first episode, and when you consider the fact that he wants to be the hokage, you start to wonder if he has any potential to achieve this, but by the end of that episode, in one of the most satisfying ways ever, he proves that he has the potential to do so, by learning the forbidden technique and overwhelming a more skilled opponent, if we use this to define the standard underdog people love its not just simply being weak, its having something that makes him stand a chance at achieving his goal, for naruto its his determination which helps him to learn an op ability, for deku its his courage that gets him chosen for one for all, for asta its his lack of magic, a disadvantage that ended up becoming an advantage against the strongest foes in the series,(p.s: i love black clover). not only that as we push through the series the characters show more ways they're even more special, like how naruto although controversial, practically becomes the chosen one. when you put Mikumo beside these characters and call them both underdogs Mikumo is probably the hardest to call special, his weapon skills are lacking and the gap between most characters is so much that, he can’t possibly catch up so easily, and the creator doesn't just create a mechanism that helps him get to their level, like in the others, his intelligence is the only thing special about him, but that isn't special in world trigger cause almost every character makes intelligent moves, heck there is a plot... I mean fate-controlling genius in the series. meaning Mikumo is lacking immensely in one area, has to make up for it with his teammates, and then since his intellect doesn't always guarantee a win, his strategies have to take advantage of the enemy's beliefs of his weakness, to win and this might be very hard for people who aren't used to waiting for "characters to develop and show what makes them special" to like, and this is intentional by the creator, some reasons being: i. Mikumo’s weakness makes the strengths of his teammates stand out and raises the value of their teamwork. ii. Mikumo’s slow growth is realistic and highlights the value of the skills of other characters when characters show forth amazing things they don't become unimpressive later because Mikumo can't just learn it, he lacks the potential to even pull some of them off(low trion). when I noticed this it became clear that Mikumo when compared to the other protagonists, is quite frankly the true underdog amongst them, simply because the other protagonists are usually special people, with a temporary disadvantage, to overcome. whereas Mikumo will probably never overcome his disadvantage. he is an " Underdog among-st underdogs" hence he is the greatest underdog. sorry for the long comment.

Osamus main role is to move the plot forward. The decision he makes changes the story way more than any of the powerful fighters

I think Round 5 really solidified Tamakoma 2 as a whole to be a threat. Before Osamu was always disregarded even as a strategist at that time most teams found him an easy kill. But with Osamu now finding new strength and purpose with his wires he was deemed a threat now that people needed to be wary and to be eliminated as soon as possible. It was very evident by round 6 that Oji squad wanted him gone asap and even Toma whobwas commentating stated that dealing with the wires after would be such a pain that removing him before he could set them up would be of everyone's best interest.

Round 8 100% has some of my favorite moments, but I would like to point out that it’s not really him using hound at the last second that was unexpected, it was that he was using hound from the start - he just had the tracking turned off. Usually Asteroid is notably stronger and larger than hound, but his trion amount was so small you couldn’t tell the difference. Great video regardless, I really enjoy when people appreciate world trigger and its main character for what they are

Thing about Mikumo is that he's trying to out big-brain people who are trying to out big-brain each other way longer than he already was. So how can a literally garbage stats MC compete with the the rest of the chads? Psychological Warfare. Mikumo is not the only smart leader out there. But he's arguably ( there's no argument really) the weakest among the B-rank s. We've seen how shrewd he was when During The round 3 ranks wars. Cap. Suzanari and taichi were in a drawn out battle with Cap. Nasu, Mikumo knowing they were outgunned by Nasu, choose to help them by pressuring Nasu from behind so she cannot solely focus on one side, like a pincer attack. He knows she needs to gain points fast and regroup with her mates. So Mikumo gave a her doubts and him enough time for the Aces( Kuga and Ko) to be converge to their locations. There other flashes of his shrewdness, like the time he tried to one up everyone by trying to recruit the power elite Jin. But the culmination of this was when round 8 when he lead them all (Except Karasuma) by the nose right from the beginning. You see they all knew Tamakoma 2nd will have an ace technique to show to the round, and they where lead to believe that the one who will use it is Hyuse. The moment he unveiled viper, they thought, Tamakoma's tricks were done. And that's exactly what Mikumo and his team want them to believe. You see, everyone knew that except from Hyuse the rest of Tamakoma do not have the time to use another set of trigger, even more so with Mikumo having shit reserves of trion. So he all led them to believe that he is still using his default loadout with Asteroid as primary. What they don't know is that because of his shit trion levels, one can't actually distinguish they difference in power when he was using either of the triggers well because both output is shit regardless 🤭. He even acts like he was just throwing regular asteroids be setting the Hound to the lowest possible setting.This was foreshadowed in the previous chapters( or episode if you're on anime). So when Ninomiya who was already lead to believe that Mikumo was using asteroid, casually avoided linear trajectory bullets by side stepping. Imagine his surprise when he curved their paths at the last moment. All in all, this the big brain moment was the culmination of all Mikumo's hardwork and dedication. Sure Chika also had a major character development ( I mean that was also hype) but Mikumo's plan was for me the real dish for the episode. In all honesty, I haven't seen this level of big-brain moves since Code Guess. Really well played by the author.

I recently rewatched round 5 and loved that it was truly a redemption episode for mikumo and the team. China and her lead bullets after inability to fire, kuga with his failed scorpion and the winning kill for the team. Most importantly mikumo holding back katori squad and going two kills, one of them successfully using planted bullets, a technique he learned and improved upon from his last match.

High key osamu is what deku should have been not getting sone jesus power to become a hero but work for it despite not having powers.

While I agree that seeing deku in a more supportive role woulda have been interesting to see, hero society is cruel and people with no quirks truly do get the boot of things. Even that vigilante spin-off pretty much screams that a lot tbh 🤣

@@YozakuraSensei yes while its true that the society is cruel doesnt take away from the fact deku was written to be a self made protag that does with what he has its more like getting a small loan of a 10 million dollors and claim you worked from the grown up

@@YozakuraSensei Vigilante appearing in a conversation. I'm surprised, really 😂 But to be honest, Koichi is a good example of how creativy and training can turn even a seemingly weak power (a low-tier mobility quirk) into something that can rival the ones on top (here being heroes).

He's like spiderman keep doing what he does for his community and even contributing to his community and many ways not just heroism but deku? Just one action deemed him to be the one successor for OFA? ( but then redconned in the life expectancy) its still not about his way of thinking nor his willingness to act its just about circumstances and gaining power for no real reason.

@@REDvsBLUE4E Deku had to train hard for 10 months just to be able to accept the power, then anytime he used said power he was destroying his body. To the point where he was going to lose his arms if he carried on. Acting like Deku didn't work for anything is bs.

What Ashihara shows so well is how to get away with weakness. Most Shounen give power ups to increase the ability of their characters so they can overcome odds and beat their enemies. In turn the enemies have power ups to make the battles seem scarier or more impactful. The level of growth for Mikumo is frankly as slow as real growth is in real life. He does grow but it is hard. It takes so many episodes for him to achieve growth and because of this it doesn't seem like a magic power up but an obvious next step based on all the steps he has taken before. When I first watched World Trigger I couldn't get into it. But once I understood, it has been hard to go back.

The Round 8 win vs Ninomiya had more setup than I've heard anyone give it credit for. Everyone knows the disguised Hound thing, a lot of people know it slipped through because he didn't have enough firepower normally to tell the difference, but the actual kill is set up when Yuma tells Ninomiya that Osamu will be the one to beat him. I'm 90% sure Osamu asked him to say it. It makes Ninomiya take Osamu seriously enough to plan a counter rather than just reacting, and therefore leaves him confident enough that he's already halfway through his planned move before he realizes it was the wrong one, because of there's one thing Osamu actually excels at, it's getting an opponent to make a predictable move.

I think the setting of WT being more sci-fi than fantasy helps to make Osamu is a realistic protagonist. He can't be given any hand outs (e.g. Deku), have hidden powers to be unlocked (e.g. Naruto), or physically train himself to an unrealistic degree (e.g. Asta). He's never going to become the most powerful person in the show, but through slow growth, building experience, and gathered knowledge, he becomes a capable strategist and a capable combatant. Going into round 8, he knew no one in his team could beat Ninomiya 1v1. To have a viable strategy he identified that by having two opponents Ninomiya would have to use less firepower or drop his shield. To exploit this he formulated a strategy using their two aces. However, he knew that if something happened to one of them the strategy would fail, so he also trained to pull off the same attack himself. However, he knew that he wasn't physically capable enough to fill the same role, so he chose to use misdirection to overcome his weakness. Going into the round he then equipped the less viable viper just in case the scenario came up despite it weakening his overall attack power. He understood what was needed to win, planned for uncertainties, and overcame the power difference. This was all done without him ever getting a power boost and was only possible because of the effort he put in to achieve his goals.

This guy is just spitting facts left and right and I love him because of it. Mikumo was not my favorite character and honestly hated him because of how trash he was but he gradually grew on me and started to like him after that Hound play. Great video man and yes your title is right. Greatest Shounen Underdog
