First time I took my wife to see the races in Chowchilla I mentioned wanting a "river racer class" boat basically beginners class, she said no way if she was around because if I had any success I wouldn't stop until I was in a TFH. She grew up around Indy and Champ cars and didn't want to have to bring me home in a box. I was a fan and went to the local events just to imagine myself in one.

I felt fortunate to actuall get paying jobs working on a lot of really well ran (asphalt) promods, top alcohol and top fuel classes (w/ cars) -- but I ALWAYS (still do 😁) imagine, while watching) being in (or on, lol) a 4-wheel, 2 wheel, 2 prop or single prop ride w/ every pass! I only got to help VERY little on any boats (but it's great stuff!!)

gag1025 When you have 6,000 horsepower and you are about to use as much as you can in a short period of time, it's a good idea to be pointed in the direction you want go. River currents and wind can make a boat drift around and be off line to the direction they want to travel in.

SanFranciscoBay You are correct but these guys are familiar with all the obstacles that they run into. To me that is the beauty of any type of drag race (car, dragster, bike, boat) in that the driver has to be good in all aspects from the take off to the end and has to be able to conquer all adverse conditions from start to finish. drag boats have always fascinated me. The gfact that they can propel an object on water from a standstill to that speed in that distance.

I’ve came across some amazing canisters of old racing film mostly hydroplane races and some auto races from 1959-1961 about 8 reels got it from an old collector in Destin,FL but it also has guntersville Al labeled on a couple reels. In a nice old metalLogan deluxe model carrying case. I haven’t been able to watch but did have a projector and before it went out I saw photos of a miss bergdahl (?) not sure but it was something like that. I’m wanting to sell the collection but not sure who to contact any help much appreciated my grandmother I lived with and took care of just passed away and I’m moving back out west if anyone knows a good contact please reply,thanks

+Harold Gibson "Top Fuel" equates to a fuel mixture generally consisting of greater than 90% Nitromethane, while the remaining percentage is made up of methanol. The respirators are indeed worn because of the hard to breathe fumes produced when the fuel has combusted, but Nitro fumes are much more difficult to tolerate than alcohol fumes.

The power gains have become more incremnetal in the past several years. It's much more a deal of getting the most current track data and dialing the car electronically right before it lines up. The power is always there. The setup and crew are what get the most out of a race.
