For those viewers thinking that these engines don’t put out 10,000 HP, you are right. For the 2018 season, top fuel engines are estimated to produce close to 11,000 HP. A few facts: No engine dyno exists that can handle all this power and give an exact HP reading; it is calculated based on a number of factors. The engines are fitted with a supercharger that typically provides 60 PSI of boost, but can provide 74 PSI Max. At max boost, it takes 1,000 HP just to turn the blower; 900 HP at normal boost. Two spark plugs per cylinder, two massive distributors per engine with an ignition system that generates 60 amps. When the engines are used in Top Fuel dragsters on land, the engines will propel the car to 100 MPH in the length of the dragster; that is 25 feet.

All courtesy of Charles Parsons that invented the steam turbine and dropped them into a boat that ripped the propellers to shreds. So he built a small water tank and a high-speed camera which showed a phenomenon called "cavitation". Tiny vacuum bubbles that degraded the metals and he redesigned the props to withstand this to make the worlds fastest ship - by four times over and changed marine history forever. Without props that can withstand the solid uncompressability of water and the cavitation that takes place these props would explode instantly with far less than 10K of horsepower. And he did it in 1894 with the ship "Turbinia". *That's being way ahead of your time.*

I'd love to see the tip cavitation effect on a new prop after a single run. Do they appear damaged? Pitted? Warped? Chipped or cracked?
@xtreme3minutevideos8873 жыл бұрын
Hi, the props last quite a few runs. They don't have cavitation issues because they are only partially submerged. The centre of the prop is at water level so when 1 blade is rotating in the water, the other blade is in air above the water. Hence the huge rooster tail.
@beardymcbeardface693 жыл бұрын
@@xtreme3minutevideos887 Okay, cheers for that info.

@@xtreme3minutevideos887 Cavitation damage happens when the vacuum bubbles on the vacuum side of the prop blades collapse. These props have sharp leading edges to force cavitation but they are past that large vacuum bubble before it has a chance to collapse. The singing noise you hear when you have a water faucet open only part of the way is cavitation and it's what eats up faucet valve seats. It happens more on the hot water faucet because hot water is closer to its boiling point and needs less vacuum to boil.
