Instead, Fang is an amoral character. He's the type of character who is willing to work for anyone as long as the price is right. Eggman is immoral while Fang is amoral. This makes Fang a unique and rare type of antagonist in the Sonic franchise.

I kind of always saw it as Fang living under unfortunate circumstances that the franchise was going through between his debut in Triple Trouble and the release of Sonic Adventure. As I feel like the modern redesigns, or the release of Sonic Adventure, was always meant to be treated as a soft "reboot" of the franchise. Keeping only the most substantial of the classic era characters, lightly using older inventions like the Metal Sonics, and making good enough callbacks due to the main 4 (Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy) having good connections between one another. They obviously cover 4 completely different playstyles in Sonic Adventure, but they wanted to represent two key genres with two characters that stood out next to the usual woodland creatures we're using to seeing. So naturally we give the gunner section to a brand new Eggman invention who grows a connection to Amy, and a giant cat as a means of comic relief (since by this point, Amy had been upgraded from her status as comic relief). On top of Fang not having the appearances he had, I think he also missed out potential relevance not appearing in Sonic X-Treme and from there I feel like SEGA didn't necessarily *wanna* neglect Fang but never really wanted to revisit him. Since at the point it'd take to bring back classic characters like Mighty, Ray, Vector, Espio, they may as well be introduced as brand new characters. I mean as much as possible when we got classic titles brought back in collections and were permitted to put in Game Gear titles, naturally that's 2 games Fang was in. He was even a gachapon toy you collected in Shenmue alongside other characters who were in Sonic the Fighters. That is, when we get to Sonic Heroes and SEGA actually was attempting to bring back as much of the classic roster as possible. Since we know that Fang *was* actually considered for Sonic Heroes, and lost out to the more unique Chaotix featuring Vector, Espio, and Charmy as Mighty and Ray could be seen as too similar archetypes to Tails/Knuckles. Had there been a 5th team however, I do think Fang, Bean, and Bark had a real possibility of showing up. However, that's not what happened, and as another theory I kept in my mind SEGA essentially went back to ideally not bringing any other older character back as much as possible while the cast featured in Sonic Heroes with a couple stragglers like Silver and Blaze would remain as recurring characters. Wasn't a thing exclusive to classic era characters either, as this hammer unfortunately hits characters like Gemerl, Marine, Johnny, Vanilla, even Cream for a long time. Obviously when time came to it to create a classic era title though, we got to see older characters return as part of creating titles like Sonic Mania and Sonic Superstars feels in part to appeal to an older audience anyways so naturally it feels nonsensical to have the same rulings against bringing older characters back as before. Maybe as SEGA is also trying to give this treatment to the Modern Sonic brand too, by bringing back older characters we hadn't seen in awhile like Emerl, there's good hope they may try to appeal to older audiences with future titles a little more than before.

I honestly very often forget this character existed. But it seemed like for the longest time Sega themselves just completely forgot entirely. I was first introduced to fang when I was watching some old KZbin video that probably wasn't really that all the time as it was 2008 or 2009 or something but anyways it was a walkthrough of Sonic triple trouble and that was how I got introduced to fang. It was cool to see him in Sonic mania even though it was not the real version of him. Also it's cool that in Sonic origins plus you can play Sonic triple trouble

Strong agree I love this guy, but I hate how over villainous they've portrayed him ever since superstars. He's suppose to be a neutral bounty hunter who puts rewards over morals but he's still good enough to stand against evil when it goes too far or betrays him and work with the good guys and seems to care about his partners, not just an irredeemable abusive a-hole. The change from Sniper to Hunter is also just pointlessly dumb unlike his other name changes which actually make sense both in and out of universe.

There's no alternative universe where classic and modern games take place in different universes. Sonic Adventure's story is built upon what Sonic 2 and Sonic 3 & Knuckles establishes, so it wouldn't make sense if Sonic Adventure has no connection with the previous games in the continuity.

If you were able to read the Archie Sonic comics or the Fleetway comics and then getting into Archie, since I think Europe got the Archie Sonic comics at some point, Sonic’s most iconic obscure characters got a bit to do. Sure, Fang didn’t get as much as Mighty and Ray, but he still was prominent.

Fang had to be roped in with the two Sonic the Fighters debutants Bark the Polar Bear and Bean the Dynamite; and that game was developed by SEGA's AM2 team rather than the main Sonic Team, meaning those two characters were _even more_ screwed than Fang ever was. It took the third-party extended material from Archie Comics to give him some extra character depth.

In the case of side games like in the 2000s-10s those R still made by ST so it would count for that reddit post u referenced. In Heroes they DID try to put EVERYONE & give them all teams but it became too much & so they whittled it down to a select few & fang was alr an easy 1 to cut for obv reasons. The Olympics it's harder to guess but 1st easy thing to point out is it's again a ST game. They prob also only wanted to include only relevant & known characters that would more immediately fit & even parallels on both sides(sonic/mario, shadow/wario, tails/luigi etc etc)

The reason they changed Fang to have 5 fingers has to do with the Yakuza. Members would sacrifice a portion of their pinky as an initiation ritual. This connection is why most Japanese characters have 5 fingers. US characters commonly have 4 for stylistic reasons

Fang The Sniper? Interesting choice there bud. For me it's Emerl. Honestly I don't know why people consider Shadow to be the best. For me he's not the best Sonic character of all-time.
