The Greatest Story Ever Told began my collection of film scores when I first heard it in 1965 at the age of 11. This film's music will always be for me the Holy of the Holies of biblical film scores. Alfred Newman and Miklos Rozsa were the Deans of film music composition.

The hardest part of the entire score was listening to LIBERA ME as Jesus/Max struggled to carry the cross through the Jerusalem street to Golgotha, and the Romans ordered Sydney Poitiers as Simon of Cyrene to help Jesus carry His cross. It is, to me, the single most phenomenally immeasurably heart-rendering music I have ever heard, always brings tears. Lynn Dawson sang that piece at Princess Diana's funeral. No words to describe the fathomless depth of emotion. Love you, Fred, thank you deeply and God bless you.----US CG mom

I first saw GSET shortly after it opened in NYC. I will never forget the chills I had from hearing the Libera Me when Jesus was carrying the cross. Shortly thereafter I discovered the Verdi Requiem and it conjured up that image. And it was incredibly moving at Princess Dianas funeral. When Ailyn Perez sang it at the Met for the 20 year commemoration of 9/11 she was clearly fighting back tears. A truly divinely inspired piece, all the more remarkable considering Verdi was not religious.

Newman links what was to be his final religious score with themeatic motifs from his previous music for similar subjects: 'The Hunchback Of Notre Dame', 'The Song Of Bernadette', and 'The Robe', particularly the opening of the piece, which can be heard in all these scores. There is such a sense of loss and loneliness in this most beautiful score by one of the true masters of film composition. I would love to see a version of 'The Greaest Story Ever Told' with the full Newman score reinstated.
@josephcarlbreil53804 жыл бұрын
George Stevens butchered Newman's original score, replacing many of the cues with music Newman had previously composed for "The Robe" and "Hunchback of Notre Dame'. Newman has famously remarked, 'It's my music, but not my score'.
@nstix2009xitsn3 жыл бұрын
@@josephcarlbreil5380 In Hollywood, Holyland, Ken Darby, Alfred Newman's choral arranger, argued that Stevens had let other parties mislead him into making fatal errors in making Story. However, if Darby is right, Stevens had to have been in the grips of artistic senility. Artistic senility is nowhere near as dramatic as senile dementia; however, a director whose touch was formerly unerring, such as the Stevens of A Place in the Sun (1951); Shane (1953); and Giant (1956) will lose his touch.

From St John Chapter 10 verses 17 and 18 " Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life, that i might take it again. No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. this commandment have I recieved of my Father". Christ took upon himself the sins and the illness' of every person that ever lived or ever would live on the earth, but no matter how much pain he was in, it could'nt kill him. And when he had suffered for every one of us, he then voluntarily gave up his life. Everything that needs to be done to enable us to return to our father in heaven has already been performed. All we have to do is repent and be baptised by someone who has the authority to perform it; receive the gift of the Holy Ghost by that same authority and endure to the end, by striving to keep the commandments, and then when we stumble, repent and continue to pick our selves up.

This film got an undeservedly bad press. Yes, the cavalcade of stars was a bit much, but what I really admired about the production was that it eschewed spectacle for spectacle’s sake, so common among epic films of that era. There is a remoteness, even an other worldliness, about the film, which somehow works, set against the stark beauty of Utah. Newman’s score is moving and sad, doing without the screaming ecstatic choruses, and the Libera Me from Verdi’s Requiem is a touch of genius.
