Had an '85 with the 22R carbureted engine in it years ago. Drove it 200k miles, and then dropped a rebuilt engine and transmission in it. Drove it another 100k miles. Sold it to a young Marine. He called me out of the blue three years later and was still driving it. Most reliable truck I have ever owned. Wish I had never gotten rid of it.

My father had an auto service center back in the 80's and was a die hard GMC fan. As these trucks became more popular we had more and more of them coming into the shop but the only thing we every did on them was general maintenance. I can't recall ever having to actually replace anything on one of these trucks. My father was so impressed that he finally broke down and purchased one for himself as his everyday driver and hunting truck. He drove that truck for 12 years and put over 400K miles on it. He purchased a new one and sold his old one to a neighbor down the street. That guy drove the truck for years and eventually gave it to his son to drive when he turned 16. They gave it a new paint job and did a basic engine rebuild and that guys son still owns and drives that truck today. It had the 22R in it and I do remember changing the head gasket a few times but other than that and a few other wear items over the years it was rock solid.

AMEN! I am SOOO tired of being offered garbage products from so many manufacturers these days. It is disgusting to me that a business would be ok with selling something that is designed to be replaced because it costs too much in time and resources to maintain it. A vehicle should outlast its owner with standard maintenance. I want a simple, no frills vehicle that doesn't spazz out when a wire bundle gets rubbed the wrong way. Chad, thank you for all of your work and commentary, witness and testimony! you and your team are doing great things. Keep it up.

I purchased my 1986 Toyota HiLux regular cab new in 86 and still have it. It's got 240 thousand miles on it and has been many places a full size rig could never go. I've camped in it uncountable times after driving deep into the mountains. It has never actually broken down and left me stranded. It never fails to draw attention and I could have sold it a hundred times. It's in great shape and I garage it at my farm for running errands around my little country town. I have replaced the head gasket and timing chain as you mentioned. You are correct about it being a legendary vehicle and all it really needs is the bed mounted .50 cal.

I bought an '86 with 260K on it in 1995 for $2K while in Highschool. I went everywhere in that thing. I nicknamed it the mudskipper. I pulled a Hay Monster to town 20 miles away with it once. The only time I got stuck was when I slid off the road and into a bunch of silt and panicked and forgot to put it in 4wd. Once I engaged the 4wd, it crawled right out. I wound up selling it for $3K with 330K miles on it. I wish I would have kept it, but plenty of good memories!

I agree. @ 5:24mrk I just knew you were going to ask "why can't someone make doorhandles that last". Ive replaced all of them in my 98 Toyota Tacoma SE TuRD. Interior and exterior, driver and passenger side, all four, more than once! I recently found on a forum that replacing the spring in the door latch mechanism with a heavier gauge spring will remedy the problem, as it doesn't lose tension over time, resulting in a hyperextension for lack of a better word.

Picture it, 1994, my friends uncle owned a garage that specialized in Toyotas. He also, conveniently had a sand pit to the rear of said garage. My friend and I just got done working at the shop around midnight and were in those pits with his Toyota and blew the engine. Towed the truck into the shop and proceeded to swap that engine with another in the shop. 8 hours later we were having breakfast and getting ready for another day in that same garage. The best of times.

Many times pulling recovered vehicles for Insurance Companies back to Southern California. Pulled many 4 wheel full sized vehicles out with it, big chevys, dodges, and fords. Drove it on many of same roads used in Baja 1000 thru Melling Ranch land mountain area. Never let me down, manual locking front hubs, great engine, 4 speed trans. 2 quick ones. My brother had an old 82 model. We were down at a place called the ruts, running around, slinging mud, going through big mud holes. We came to one, my brother asked "how deep you think that is?" I said maybe halfway up the wheel. He drove off in her amd it was over the hood. She didn't miss a beat, just kept right on plugging along and pulled out the other side. And that was the old carb engine. Some years later, working at a flooring mill, had a buddy that had one. His motor was about shot. So he ordered a new one. The old leaked like a strainer so he decided to see how long it would run off water. 3 weeks was the answer!

Toyota mechanic here, we used to put aftermarket steel timing chain guides in them when repairing them, the plastic guides were fine till you get slop in the chain, then it mixes oil with coolant to destroy the engine. In the 1990s to early 2000s Toyota had these vehicles mastered, they could not get better.

The a/c still works great & my girlfriend/now wife bought an Alpine CD deck for her 10th birthday back in 1998 & it still looks/works great. I bought my 4Runner back in 1994 for $6500 cash. I call her my "Mountain Goat", my Urban Assault Vehicle because she's so tough and will go anywhere without a complaint and I always feel safe and comfortable in her. The old saying 'Keep it simple Stupid' is lost today. I was a line mechanic in a Chevy dealership and then a Jeep dealership. I owned a number of Chevy 4x4s back in the '70s through until recently when I went Ford. I owned a '70 Blazer that had a 307 V-8 three on the tree with positraction front and rear. It was a beast to drive when everything was locked in but it would go anywhere. It was easy to work on and really nothing would ever break if you treated it right. I now have a '22 Ford F-150 with a Coyote 4x4 and I wouldn't know where or how to start working on it. Too many electronics for one thing.

My brother begged me to go, so glad I didn't let him. It would have taken his head off. My dad still has the truck. Bought it from me so I could put a down payment on a new Jeep. Sitting in the back yard. He refuses to sell it. Has privately said he keeps it to remind him of how blessed his family is... dang I miss that truck. All I ever wanted. Had to do a head job on it in college.

My first truck was a 1984 Toyota 4x4. Extra cab, straight axle, had a 1985 22re motor (fuel injection) bought it with 244,000 miles. Back in 1999. When I would get it stuck. I would shift from reverse to drive, in 4low. Without taking my foot off the gas. It was to the floor board. Never slip or jump, just went back and forth, into gear. I did break the frame. Re-welded it in shop class. Great first truck for a 15/16yr old. Also my timing chain guides did fail. Around $550 bucks to fix it, 1999 money.

Drove an 85" for years, loved it. Many miles off-roading in the Nevada desert and mountains. Had only one real issue, front hubs leaked and needed resealed at least once per year. Timing chain finally ate up the case. Could have been prevented if I had been aware at the time

Just recently got me a 2009 Toyota Tacoma TRD off road with the 4.0 V6 engine. I absolutely love this truck. Been praying for one for years and have done a lot of research on them and from what I have found this one (the engine) is the bullet proof one. This is all I need and more. I love them all man a lot of people hate on it but you get what you pay for and they just keep proving themselves. Tacoma for life!

Had an ‘88 with over 215,000 when I gave it to a family member, did frequent and regular oil changes. The only repair work that was ever needed was a new water pump and a new battery. Amazing truck, wish I still had it!! Appreciate all that 3 of 7 represents. 🙏🏼👊🏼

100% solid truck, my dad had one he bought new in 1985, I bought it from him 6 years later, used that thing bow hunting in Southern Georgia and got through mud at USMC MLB and Fort Benning/Moore while other lifted Scouts and Broncos got stuck. It was the dark blue and had the same small extra cab that would fit a bow or shotgun.

Mine was just like this body wise, but it was a 1984 Tan in color straight axle carburetor one, I got mine with 101K miles which 65K where as it was being towed. I ran it up to 390K miles and it is still running pretty good, but now it lives down in Ga-What-awe-lar-hair-awe Mexico. I loved that truck and I really miss it. I lived in Southern California and they wanted it to be pass a smog check better than a new truck and in 2014 I just didn’t have the money to get it running right again so that is why I sold it off. Thanks for sharing

Died because it was rear ended and totaled, put a clutch a starter two batteries in it drove it till 2006 as my only vehicle. The R22 engine was bullet proof; i forgot i had to replace catalytic converter after 16 yrs to pass emission test here in Texas.

For 17 years she was a hard charger. I luv in N Georgia and it would go thru snow and ice and not slip. How I miss it!!

Whoever owned My 86' Toyota 4x4 P/U single Cab ran it hard. It did great when I had it for a year. The bed was rusted to crap, I had to build a wooden bed for it but, That 22r engine has a flaw, it's the cooling hose under the Carb. So, I gave it away at 180k miles. I now have a 02' Blazer ZR2 with 300k that looks & drives new. It's getting better mileage than the sticker shows In 2002. Rear locker & it's a beast

I had a 1995 4Runner 5 speed 22re. The vehicle was heavy for that engine so the vehicle couldn’t get out of its own way but I loved it. The vehicle always started and never complained on the highway loaded down with the ac on and cruise set at 70mph for hours on end. In 1986 they went to independent front suspension. My dream truck to this day is the 1985 xtracab solid front axle Marty McFly edition from back to the future. The closest thing to these pickups is the hilux only made overseas , too bad.

I had a 1988/89 Toyota Camry V6 LE. Toyota still uses the same engine in some of their vehicles. It had a twin cam 24 valve 6 cylinder engine. It was built like a tank and drove like a rocket. The engine ran so quietly you couldn’t tell if it was running or not. It was made in Japan and was built with quality and engineering marvels for its time. Everything had its place within the build and no space was wasted.

I have 305k on my 2017 4banger Tacoma. This beauty was my old work truck my awesome boss gave to me for free once it hit 300k. Only slight leak in a minor damp power steering fluid reservoir ... Never once been low on fluid which is a trip but that'll be the 1st part in the engine compartment to likely fail. The only non wear items I have replaced was the rear end, rather than repair the rear drums and leaky axles I just bought a used '20 rear end from a crashed truck for just about the same price as the repair would've cost. I'm 100% on board with Toyota products.

I never owned one of these trucks, but I did own a 98 Nisan pickup, 5 speed ran great, I had to by a bigger truck for work a 2010 Dodge Ram 4x4 with 5.7 hemi. A fun truck to drive and in my opinion the best looking body style for Dodge pickups. I have had to put a cam in it and change out the shift cylinoid twice, I'm at 200 thousand miles and I need to put another cam in it and if you think oh not to bad changingout the cam, wrong you have to pull the heads to do so . The Nisan I sold to a friend is still running and only had to have basic parts replaced.

My 1st vehicle I bought in 1987 was a 1979 Toyota 4x4 with a long bed/roll bar w/lights and 33" tires. Paid $2,900. Joined the military, shipped it overseas, and brought it back to the States. I have enjoyed the last two truck videos! I currently own an awesome 96 F250 7.3. Epic. I have ALSO owned an 84 Toyota pickup! Let me tell you, indestructible. I was a kid, 20, when I rolled that sucker 2 1/4 times in a field trying to do donuts. Dumb! Tipped that thing back over, and drove it away. The only damage a broken windshield!! Alas, it succumbed to the dreaded head gasket on a rainy night on the freeway. By the time I got it pulled over, head was done. Too young and too poor to resurrect it. Great videos guys. Love Bible chats especially. Huge follower and fan. Prayers and one day hope to cross paths. God bless! -Rich in WA state.

I had an 87 Toyota pickup single cab that I bought from my friends Dad in high school for $2500. I honestly didnt know how good I had it at the time. Ive had 2 Tacomas since then, and it was the Most reliable and durable vehicle I ever owned. The Wheel wells and rocker panels rotted out (typical of NE weather) but the prior owner cut out the rot and slapped some sheet metal over it, and Bam! Good to go. I let the truck go with 293k miles for cheap money and bought an S10 because it was newer and looked cleaner. Still kick myself in the ass for that move. Guess its part of being young and having lack of experience and exposure to life. They sure don’t make em like they used to.

A good thing about the 22RE is that it's a crate engine that's easily replaceable. I have a 2006 Toyota Higlander with the CMZ-FE engine, and am currently on 180k miles. The only thing I've had to replace on it is the starter, and it's super easy to get to. I'll never get rid of my Highlander. We drive it from Kentucky to California , to visit family, once every 3 or 4 years, and it makes it great across the Rockies on the way out, and the Desert on the way back, when we come back through Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas.

I was 19 when I purchased my first brand new vehicle for $10,000 cash out the door from Kendall Toyota (Miami). That's $26,500 in today's money. It was a 1988 Toyota 4WD 5 speed MT truck regular cab. Dark blue on blue interior. No A/C, no power windows or locks, no radio, no cruise control, driver's side only sideview mirror, and had a vinyl bench seat and floor. Top speed was 110mph (New Mexico road tested). The clutch cancel feature and 4WD low gear ratios were ahead of their time, as was the independent front suspension. Drove that thing 7,000 miles from Miami to LA to Anchorage in two epic road trips. Off roaded the hell out of it in Arizona and Southern California with zero issues or drama. Hands down the best vehicle I ever owned. If I could go back in time and kept it instead of selling it in Alaska, I would.
