When Canute was just a boy, he heard a story of the St.Brice’s day massacre; King Aethelred of England ordered the extermination of all Danes in his land, which led to the death of his Aunt Gunhilde and her husband Pallig and countless others. His father Sweyn Forkbeard was overcome with grief and would personally lead raids against England frequently. Canute’s father was rash, bold and a fearless warrior but he wasn’t there for the boy as he was always away fighting. So how would Canute be forged into the greatest King Scandinavia had ever seen? This is his story.

In my opinion Canute is the Viking version of Alexander the Great. They both had fathers who were great warriors with grand ambitions and struggled with getting out from under their father's shadows, they both became kings at a young age, they both had far grander ambitions than their fathers, they both heavily relied on their faith and used it to their advantage, they both died far too young and once they died their empires died with them, plus many more similarities.

45 is not young it’s middle aged 45-54 is middle aged I say that because Herakles didn’t die young he died at 51? or close to there. Achilles Alexander Jesus Bruce Lee and Tupac died young before the age of 33. 25 in Tupac’s case but you get the picture. They were in their prime prime. Back then it might be a little bit older. They were pagans except for Jesus. Moses Joshua Caleb David Samson Elijah and Elisha could probably do whatever they want until their 80’s Samson was never going to weaken Caleb was 75 and he felt 29 Elijah could run faster than a chariot David is just blessed by God and a skilled warrior? Elisha could probably have she bears and angels fight for him and before them, people lived to be between 200 and 969 years old

English History is extremely similar. All of the Kings, Queens, and lesser royalty all have the same names. I have a ancestor named Eleanor of Aquitaine. Trying to learn about this woman was difficult at first because there are so many Queen Eleanor's all over Europe. The Kings of England are all William, Henry, and Edward. Lol. I always thought Canute stood out to me specifically because he was not a William Edward or Henry. LOL. Trying to remember the time period, and deeds done by certain royals to me is very hard because they all have the same freaking name

what about his Polish mum? Sigrida Storrada? She was of Polish Piast Dynasty. A very strong and interesting woman. His forces were supplemented in his expedition to England by 3000 warriors from Poland sent by his grandfather. Chances are that he inerited much of Storrada resolve and pragmatic brutality. And Jomsborg Vikings were at least 50% Slavonic soldiers. this close relationship with Vikings may explain why Polish state was never really raided by them unlike other countries. There are some other historical clues like cemeteries where side by side were laid Polanie, Vikings and Pontic warriors. And finally the last Viking capital was in Darłowo ruled over by Eric from the Gryfit dynasty a branch of polish Piast ruling dynasty. so there father Sven but mothers are as important. Especially Polish mothers

The history that I studied tells me that Canute was the son of King Sweyn of Denmark. He ordered his son to lay siege to London held by Thorkell the Tall to prove he was a man but his attendant Ragnar babied him so much that he acted cowardly and because of that was easily captured by thorkell. Meanwhile a viking named askeladd and his band of warriors strived to change their destinies thus saving the Prince in Marlborough, however, Thorkell pursued them all the way to Wales. My study of this chronicle stops here and I will update you all as soon as I have finished this intriguing part of british-carolingian history😊

It seems such a sad memorial to Canute the Great which is a small casket, set up on a balcony, along with the caskets of other Kings, in Winchester Cathedral. We don't even know if his bones reside in this casket, having been molested by Parliamentary soldiers in the Civil war, who scattered the bones contained within within all the caskets and (I believe) even played cricket with them, before they were later re-collected and arbitrarily placed within the caskets to be placed on the balcony. But at least this is one such place (the other perhaps being Bosham Church where Harold II prayed) where one feels one can almost touch history and sense something of the people around whom these histories revolve.

Eh. They don't have the "we don't have many sources" justification they had for the time period of Vikings (9th century), so they stuck a little closer, but there's still some major problems they could've avoided. Canute wasn't king of Denmark yet by the time of the St Brice's Day massacre (1002); he would've been 12. It was his father Sweyn Forkbeard who was king. Same goes for Olaf Haraldsson aka King Olaf II of Norway (born 995); and Harald Sigurdsson, aka Harald Hardrada, wasn't even born yet. So all in all, still not great.

This is enlightenment given to me in the beginning, because I'd never heard or learned before about King Cnut. Certainly enters into the Visigothic topic. Avila, Spain, location of the film "El Cid" about Don Rodrigo Diaz de Vivar, (where I had a house in the mountains), and the last Marquesa who owned the land where everything is located including the town of Navas de Marques, I think her name was Eulalia, and that's definitely a Visigothic Germanic Scandinavian female and male name, Eulalio or Eulalia, involved in the wars of Reconquest. Visigoths either stayed mingled and had families and businesses, or back up North. Meaning that NEVER have been lost Visigoths, in the European countries melting pot, as converted Muslims and Christians. See? Here explained how this king still had to deal with paganism in his people, no matter if he was a Christian. His grandfather converted to Christianity. Teutonic knights Templar, and still seem to always be depicted as still clinging to pagan rituals, that added to their demise, abolishment, lack of funding, and I suppose finished off through The Holy Inquisition, which was anywhere considered of advancing European civilization, not just in Spain. Cleansing of Barbaric paganism was part of why. That's not pointed out.

I have the DNA passed down from King Knut in my blood. This video is well done, connecting the kings, countries and battles during that era. I am also a Christian who has always put God in the center of my life. Although no longer carrying any weight politically in Scandinavia, God has most certainly blessed our family through the centuries.

So was King Edward but you didn't see William Wallace waiting at the Battle of Sterling Bridge for the English to get in to complete formation so they could get curb stomped? No cause there was a difference between English "honor" and the Scottish, but a win is a win regardless of the strategy used. It's called taking advantage of every exploit the presents. Ragnar Lothbrok, Alexander the Great, Napoleon, Leonidas, all fought in a different manner,, cause one's rules of conducting battle doesn't mean it has to apply to the other individual. If you want to get technical, we're all murderous monsters in the end regardless of ones opinion on the matter.

@@anthonymcgaha8934 In the immediate context of the time Cnut was invading another country with extreme brutality for the purpose of enriching himself on the backs of the indigenous population. Claiming we're all apparently just as bad as each other doesn't detract from the fact Cnut and his father were clearly on the wrong side of that conflict, and neither of them are to be admired as a result. Edmund's claim to the throne was entirely legitimate, as were English aspirations of resistance against a people who had been preying on them and others for centuries. It takes more than a win to be considered a truly great man, and Cnut's victory was entirely the result of treachery and betrayal. He didn't outfight us. He just took advantage of the division and treachery within our own ranks. As did Thorkell, incidentally..

Wasn't it King Canute, or Knud, who had a sister named Liden Kirsten who fell in love with a knight named Buris, but Canute/Knud did not aprove of the connection so he let Kirsten dance herself to death. And he got Buris blinded and prisoned him near the place where Kirsten was buried, and gave a chain on just long enough that he could visit Liden Kirstens grave. If the story is true Liden Kirsten would have been 30 years older than Buris. But Canute had a sister Estrid, who married Ulf Jarl. or Eorl, who was killed in a church on command of Canute. They were parents to the famous danish King, Svend Estridsen. My history book says the viking age ended with King Canute's son Harde Knud, who died at Tove Prudes wedding after proposing a toast.

I recently found out that my father's family line is Knusden, a Danish line that dates back to who I believe is Canute. I am trying to find out more about this ancestry. I have managed to get back to 1600 where the Knudsen's are all full-blood Danish. Crazily I also have Norwegien DNA. Ancestry recently updated my DNA saying that I have a Russian line who I believe may be connected to the "Rus" - a viking group that moved into Russia. I really would like to know if my Knudsen line is connected to Canute!?!

I can tell you a story. The Vikings knew about tides and the sea going in and out. People then didn't know much beyond their very locale so for the most part, the population wasn't aware of tides. They were brought before the king for a diplomatic event or religious ceremony an hour or two before high tide and then a sea emergency arose of the water coming in and the King commanded the sea to go back and it did for the time of witness to Miraculous God Ruler level and he saved the day and the world. Not bad Penn and Teller.

What about the beach at low tide, doesn't it look like the water was there recently and not the sea emergency of a sudden encroachment of the sea upon the land? Good question. The answer is that the people there wouldn't know what it was. They wouldn't know say at Blackpool that the sea at low tide wasn't anything other than it's normal and eternal quotidian state of being i.e. that was 'the beach' and that was the sea and that was the edge of land and sea and that was it.
