a f r o how accurate is this?
@aphrodite2676
@aphrodite2676 4 жыл бұрын
@@AlpheusGibbs it's pretty accurate, of course his pronunciation is not perfect.Some mistakes he made is that we do start the sentence with a capital letter. Now I'm not sure if he mentioned this but when we write a word there's a little stroke kinda like in French that is placed ONLY on top of vowels to show how to pronounce the word. For example take my name Αφροδίτη( afrothiti= Aphrodite) on the syllable δί you can see that pronunciation mark( I don't know the name in English) and it tells you that there the tone changes. In English where is no such thing you never know how to pronounce a new word. Bc it's really hard to explain it let's take pro-noun-nce the way you pronounce the noun syllable, is different from the rest of the word, that kinda how it works in Greek but we have that little mark to tell you where your tone changes.thats how you pronounce the syllables with a τόνος(the name of the mark in Greek). Hopefully this helps!

ι, η, υ, ει, οι all make the sound /i/ like the English "ee". You just have to memorize which one to use. A phrase that shows this best is "οι ιοί" meaning "the viruses". It's pronounced /i.i.'i/ or "ee ee-EE".

I don't even know, why I'm watching this video... It's nice video, but I noticed some "mistakes"; in modern Greek, we always capitalize the first letter in a sentence (similar to english), the γ is pronounced as wama not gama (similar to ι - - > y(i)ota) and ω - - > ome(y)a, and the ; corresponds to the english ? (we use the interpunct instead). The sound of letters τ and π, is more "flat" (try not to pronounce it like t in english. Air is not coming out of the mouth - if I may the lips form an 0, whereas in english it's more like -- ).
@yanisselinis3593
@yanisselinis3593 6 жыл бұрын
You mean the sound of γ? If so, then the answer is that it sounds like the first letter of yes or ya or wagamama. ;)

I was noticing several mistakes as well. I’m wondering why he doesn’t even give the second lower case sigma (ς) which is used at the end of a word. He moves into diphthongs never mentioning a second sigma. His pronunciation of the letters isn’t even very good, quite frankly. And Lucas Araujo, Anderson says at the beginning of the video that he is teaching the modern Greek pronunciation and if you watch his other videos he thinks Koine and modern Greek are the same thing. I know, sounds self-contradictory, but that is what he says. I mean forget about whether or not it’s the Greek reconstruction of the Textus Receptus or the base Koine manuscript versions. His Greek is about on par with his theology I guess.

@@vallerycernomazov4873 I wouldn't use it. First, for most people, it's not helpful to try to learn more than one language at a time. Second, some of the pronunciations, especially Spanish, are incorrect. Lastly, this individual speaks each language with a very neutral accent, which is unnatural for pretty much any language. It's an interesting idea, but probably not useful to many, and needs work.

I have purchased a handful of books and CDs to help me learn Greek, but I've not yet pressed in. When I do, I'll focus on mastering everything you've presented here. My main reason for this venture is to read the Greek New Testament. It's so disheartening that the teaches of Biblical Greek mostly insist on the old pronunciations. In my opinion, that's just biblical scholars being prideful. That's just so ridiculous. Why learn a pronunciation no one uses today, when the option of being able to speak to Greeks is an option? I want to master this language and pay myself back with a visit to Greece. Thanks so much!
