But Turkey wants European assistance, and the join the union and wants west on its side.??? If they can’t even follow basic international law of the seas and laws regarding continental shelves then will always have issues. Apart from all discussions , considering the common sense , The Kastellorizo island is around 600 km away from Greece's mainland and 4-5 km away from Turkey's mainland , is it reasonable ? Based on international law, which Macron does not understand, the Greek island of Kastellorizo would not have an EEZ and if so a very tiny zone proportionate to the relevant southern coastline of Turkey. Macron should study his own cases in Britain vs France and France vs Canada. In the former the French won the case because the ruling was that the tiny British island next to the coast of France basically could not have its own EEZ (although a tiny zone proportionate to the relevant coastline of France was granted ). In the latter the French lost against Canada for exactly the same ruling, the tiny French island next to the coast of Canada could only have a tiny EEZ. This is because its the mainland coastline that takes precedent in EEZ allocations. This is international law. It has nothing to do with the Turkish President. It is the law of the sea. Respect it.

@Mo Boo Correct although a tiny island will get its own very very very tiny EEZ proportionate to the mainland continental shelf. For Cyprus the current Greek EEZ claim is grossly exaggerated and therefore not proportionate to the relevant southern coastline of of Turkey which as you say is the continental shelf. The international law of the sea must prevail in determining maritime zones otherwise a system of double standards will prevail, anarchy will prevail over law and justice, hardly fair, hardly democratic coming from a people that supposedly invented democracy.

Even if it was considered a coastline it is not "relevant" coastline because the Aegean sea is actually not in the eastern Mediterranean sea. The southern coastline of Turkey however is the "relevant" coastline and therefore is the continental shelf for the eastern Mediterranean sea stretching around 1,900 km. There is a case for an island nation to make such a claim but the nation must consist solely of islands. This does not apply to Greece because Greece is the mainland, its not an island state.
