To me insomniac is their best album. It’s the closest well get to knowing what was going through Green Day’s mind at the time, and even Billie Joe Armstrong said sometimes he feels it’s his most honest album. The lyrical content is rich and the instrumentation is just unbeatable. They poured every ounce of energy, and it’s a very solid conclusion to Green Day’s punk years.

Insomniac is my favorite Green Day album. Mike lays down some of his best baselines, the solo in Stuck With Me and the opening riff to Stuart and the Ave are incredible. Tré also does an amazing job as well with certain songs like Jaded and Panic Song. I love the snarky, witty lyrics, hell Walking Contradiction is one of my favorite sets of lyrics ever, and I love the punchy, quick paced instrumentation. Is it similar to Dookie? For sure, but is there experimentation on Insomniac? For sure as well. There is no other song in Green Day's discography that sounds like Babs Uvula Who? or Brain Stew, and the build up at the beginning of Panic Song is absolutely sublime. Granted songs like Tight Wad Hill and No Pride have the same problem as Having a Blast, Emenius Sleepus, and Sassafras Roots where they just kind of exist. However, when I listen to Insomniac I can listen to it front to back without skipping a single song on the track list easier than any other Green Day album. I skip Sassafras Roots on Dookie, I skip Walking Alone on Nimrod, I skip Fashion Victim on Warning, I skip Give Me Novacaine and the list goes on, but I don't feel the need to skip a single track on Insomniac. Insomniac is an album that, for the most part, says, "fuck you, you, you, especially you, and you too," but that's what gives the album its distinct charm. It also helps that Start and the Ave is my favorite Green Day song so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The funny thing about the Pop Punk term is that in the 80s Germany had a genre called Fun Punk which was litelarly the exact same thing as the 90s Pop Punk. The biggest band in that genre were "Die Ärzte" with their fun debut album "Debil" and their 80s masterpiece "Das ist nicht die ganze Wahrheit" while all the other albums they released during the 80s were kinda Post-Punk with Hard Rock. Later on when they re-united in the 90s they actually did Pop Punk and turned even more popular then before(I prefer their Fun Punk/Post Punk shit). The band has basically 3 singers with 3 different styles... well.

I did, obviously have my gripes with this particular episode, but I'll list them here since I know you're kind enough to read them. Personally, I think it was a bad idea to review six albums in one episode. Of course I don't do this as part of my career, but when you tackled Weezer's first four albums I had this same gripe- I feel like we get your more clear thoughts on an album when you take time (which let's be honest, you totally did) to more deeply analyze them. I know a lot of your fans including myself were begging you for this, but I personally feel it couldn't have hurt to split this into two or three episodes. While I personally disagree with your opinions on at least Kerplunk and Insomniac (two of my favorite Green Day records), I have to express surprise at the fact that Insomniac doesn't resonate with you more, despite you having a similar problem to me right now (being an outcast) in your youth. Then again, I liked what I had heard of Make Believe so maybe we're just meant to disagree here. This isn't even a gripe honestly, just a bit of shock. Another not-gripe but, I'm surprised Warning is your favorite Green Day album. Of all the Green Day enthusiasts I know none of them have ever had picked that album in particular. It was interesting to hear your thoughts. Whew, that was a doozy to type. Now one last question for myself, if you're willing to answer- if a fan of your work ever went on to make their own music, and wanted your honest opinion on it, would you review a fan's album? I'm sorry if it's obvious, but I am asking for myself as I hope to gather my friends together to make an album or two someday down the road and when we do I'd love to get your honest opinion- good or bad, on it. Thanks for making these reviews, Crash! Can't wait for the rest of this series especially, and whatever comes next for you!

The first time I was exposed to Green Day's music was when Games Workshop used to crank International Superhits! on their store stereos, so I forever associate Billie Joe Armstrong with painting my Chaos Space Marines back when I played Warhammer 40,000. I'm glad the older I get the more I recognise those songs had actual meaning besides Hobby Table Background Noise.
