Yeah, I think it was Mike who said that in an interview. They wanted to give fans something to listen to faster than it was already coming out, so they moved it up a month. I wonder why the albums got less fanfare & marketing as they were coming out though. It can't have been for the same reason, since they still released some music videos, 2 of which don't star the band in any capacity & the other one is just EMBARRASSING because, y'know, Twilight 5.

In addition to "bleh" and "mediocre"...one of the issues with these albums (although I wouldn't say any are bad, and I find a few things to like from every album) is that this was when Green Day started to sound old. That is a serious problem that they have never been able to come back from fully imo. I know they are obviously literally getting older, but some bands manage to hide that a bit better. To me, they sound like a 40-50 year old group of men trying to sound young.

Thank you for making this. For years I thought I was the only one who has that opinion on the trilogy. There are so many factors that lead to the disaster that is the trilogy: - Hybris: Something teels me Greed Day flew too close to the sun in the post-American Idiot era and afterwards they thought that they could get away with anything. - They took 4 years to make American Idiot and 5 years to make 21st Century Breakdown (and that one already had some issues). 3 years after this (including another world tour) and they come along with 3 records in one year? That's insane, you're not King Gizzard. - quantity over quality. You can just just tell they just bashed out track after track without spending too much time on the individual songs. There is no attenton to detail. They were on autopilot. GD were always known for being straight forward, but you could still distinguish the songs, even on "samey" records like "1039 smooth" or "Insomniac". - None of these albums have any flow. The track order seems to be random. Compare that to American Idiot (diverse but perfectly balanced) or Insomniac (an amazing 30 Minute rush). You already mentioned how Uno crashes and burns after "Kill The DJ". It's even more jarring on Dos with the awkward tonal shifts because of songs like "Nightlife" and Tré feels like a paylist on shuffle. - The albums don't stick to their concepts: Uno is the most cohesive but painfully bland because of it. Dos has some garage Rock tracks and Tré has some of the opera bombast, but in between of them are way too many bland powerpop tracks that are indistinguishable from the Uno-songs. - The overpolished sound, that might have worked on their opera albums, but sound terrible when applied to stripped down powerpop. Some guy on youtube re-recorded some of these trilogysongs dookie-style and it is almost funny how much better they sound with a fuller guitar, an audible bass, livelier drums and snottier vocals. That overpolished sound is especially troubling on "Dos", like come on, this sounds way too clean for a garage rock album. Also why does that weird vocal effect need to be on Billie's voice on almost evry goddamn song? - Mike's Bass. You already pointed it out. He does the bare minimum, but one of the key reasons why GD were so far ahead of most of their peers was that Mike played so many tricky but catchy bass lines. The bass on the trilogy could have been done by anyone. Especially the Uno-Songs would have needed more creative basslines desperately. - Trés Drums. What he does here is perfectly servicable, but nothing more. Any killer fill-ins like on "Basket Case", "In the End" or "Jaded"? Not a single one. - BILLIE'S LYRICS: What in god's name happened? A lot of the lyrics are less mature than on the first two records when the guy was a goddamn teenager. How is stuff like "Let yourself go", "Makeout party" or goddamn "NIGHTLIFE" possible? Yeah, they wanted to make something less conceptual, why not, but this is just lazy and stupid. Then again, no surprise, considering Billie's state of mind, otherwise: They made several album's in the 90's while being methed out and those didn't suck. Hope you can follow my points despite my sloppy English. Thank you.

The Band’s promotional tour was knee capped after Billie Joe went to rehab after the iHeart Radio meltdown. This is why we saw less, singles, music videos, and why the band wasn’t in music videos as they didn’t have Billie. The world tour was also canceled because of this. If these albums were a bands first outing, they’d be alright. Like if a bunch of kids who just got together wrote any of these, they wouldn’t be changing the world or anything, but we’d see that this hypothetical new band has potential. But this Green Day we’re talking about. Green Day has put out literal genre defining music by their 3rd outing. As much as I love Green Day, and they are my favorite band, the trilogy is the ketchup and mustard stains on the lapels of an otherwise perfect Armani suit.

Hey Crash, I usually don't get this personal with another KZbinr, especially one who I don't know very well, but at the end there, when you were describing how poorly this year was and how whenever you think that you have everything under control, those are also the times it hurts the hardest when things fall apart... that part nearly made me cry. That was exactly me with this year. I had everything planned out, I knew what I was going to do... and one by one, things started slipping, not going how I planned them, and now by the end, I barely even care anymore. And the crap going on in the world has especially made things toxic, not in part because my town was invaded by racists in August of this year and it feels like nobody trusts anybody anymore. I think you were speaking from your heart at the end there, and it has really helped me feel better, like someone else is feeling the same struggles I am. Just know that we, as your fans, are here for you and hope that next year goes better. Oh, and just a side note: About _Van Halen III_, the best thing that that album has ever done was get my review of it featured on Van Halen's website. So... yeah, if you ever decide to review that album, you might just be featured on their site. :) I love this review and I was glad to be able to take part in it! ~Spaceman

How much you got out of these bland albums is astounding (even if I like atleast one Track of each album, but whatever, they still suck). I can't wait for all the new shows and videos next year. Keep it up dude :D 👍🤘

Can't wait for him to rip on Nightlife. My god, that song is just so bad.

The clips you used for Nightlife aren't from the official video. That's a fan video.

Wow, the second half of this video kinda looks like Clerks, in a way.

These albums came out during a rough time in my life. I had just had a series of surgeries (out of a total 25 over the course of my life) and I was going back to community college. It was hard for me to get back to the swing of things, and to top it off, it was the first time I was alone most everyday. Luckily I got through that period and eventually graduated.

14:56 actually I did think of one example of another artist releasing their closing track as the opening single: in 2013 Lady Gaga released Applause, Artpop's fifteenth and final song, as its opening single (and biggest hit off the album). Uno and Artpop, that's not a class you want to be in.

I wonder what you'd think if you watched the documentary iCUATRO! that showed them making these albums. That would make for a really interesting video lol

Touche Amore chose closing track "Skyscraper" to be one of the singles promoting their album 'Stage Four' back in 2016. That's the most recent good example I can think of.
