Not really, that’s the Joker. Green Goblin wants power and he’ll kill anyone who gets in his way. The point he was making was that fighting until they both die, because he won’t stop until victorious, is pointless compared them joining forces to achieve his goals. He reveals his secret identity and makes a sympathy play JUST to confuse Peter and stab him in the back in the final fight because Peter beat him physically and likely might’ve killed him.
@dragonstormx

@@danielwood6833 I was thinking about his speech in light of what we saw of him in No Way Home. Plus in this movie we don't see the Green Goblin has much of goal beyond being evil, his actions at the climax have no purpose beyond making Spider Man suffer.

@@dragonstormx true but that’s because he’s petty like that, plus the power trip he’d gain from making the only possible equal he has die layer by layer. When he pretty much goads the MCU Spidey to kill him that was either a ‘lost the battle but win the war’ move, or just inconsistent writing.

Well he didn't know Peter was Spider-Man, he just thought Spider-Man was a criminal. The fact he was willing to get killed to protect Peter though is a pretty overlooked part of Jameson as a person. It goes to show he's actually a standup guy and, despite shitting on him repeatedly, cares about Peter, even if it meant he'd get killed for it evidently.

I always loved how in the Rami trilogy, Spider-Man and his villains had very comic booky moments like with how over the top the Green Goblin was at times, but also had these very human elements blended into their scenes. It adds so many layers to the Goblin's character and makes some people wonder whether if he's really a mad lunatic or a genius who's outlook on life is very warped. Green Goblin's so crazy that he sings when he's destroying and hurting people, yet at the same time also gives compelling arguments that make the audience question whether he's right and Spider-Man is wrong to try to keep being a hero.

Just saying...it was day when Goblin gassed Spiderman to sleep. It's night when the conversation happens. I can just imagine Goblin walking about the rooftop, staring at the people and the city, thinking up his little speech. Maybe stops to smoke a cigarette or two. I can see him walking over and flicking Spiderman on the cheek, telling him to wake up, before just being like "...shit. Well, I guess I could order a pizza or something...", and just sitting there having a little pizza party to himself. Then he hears Spiderman groan as he's starting to come awake, and Goblin quickly finishes up his slice and chucks the box off the roof.

When comicbook movies as a genre were still just a small demographic in a wider variety of movie genres. Mainstream marvel movies really took off after the original blade and xmen movies. Dafoe committed to the film because he knew it would be a box office smash. He knew he was part of something prestigious. From the public’s perspective 2002 was a year in which superheroes had very little stakes in the blockbuster territory but people working inside Hollywood could see the rise and potential of this genre. Twenty years later and comicbook films have dominated the cinematic landscape. Some would say that the market is oversaturated.

the analogy between goblin’s proposal in Spider-man and Joker’s speech during interrogation in the Dark knight is evident, both dialogues reveal to be not so wrong after all, that does the spectator think, “you and I are not so different” and “you complete me” are the perfect representation of the hero/villain relationship, they do have more in common than what it seems.

Well that was the dynamic. Both had been gifted extraordinary powers but how they used them is what defined them. Norman used his power for his own selfish reasons. Peter used his to help those who could not. And yet it goes deeper than that. Norman by his nature is a jaded individual who only sees the worst in people. A philosophy he points out to Harry during Thanksgiving because that's what he's been surrounded with. People who only want to exploit him and toss him aside when no longer useful hence his line to Peter telling him that the city will eventually hate him and root for his downfall. That's what separates Norman from Peter.

@chefboyhardbeat1890
@chefboyhardbeat1890 Жыл бұрын
This brief dialogue perfectly demonstrates the difference in worldviews between hero and villain. Norman Osborn spent his entire adult life in the pursuit of power. He founded his own company, worked hard, went public, and they found him “amusing” for awhile. Allowing him to be CEO, and he gladly took the throne. But he forgot his place. A CEO is not a dictator. Still, he did his best to keep his throne, risking his life to keep Oscorp on the military payroll, sabotaging the Quest exoskeleton, and still, they kicked him out of his own company. With no other option he resorted to murder. What choice did he have? He might ask himself. Never considering Oscorp was not “his” company simply because he started it. When a company goes public the founder has very little say without 51% ownership, which he clearly didn’t have. But Norman is above all of that. How dare they vote him out. Norman comes from a different world than the Peter. At the beginning of the board meeting he says “costs are down, revenues are up,” mirroring exactly what Uncle Ben says at the beginning of the film when commenting about being laid off. Norman made his way by stepping on people like Uncle Ben long before he stepped into the goblin chamber. The goblin persona is only a convenient scapegoat; an outward manifestation of who he really is inside: a bitter, cynical megalomaniac, destined to be carried “on the shoulders” of the masses like the god he sees himself as. Even in private, Norman pretends to be afraid of the goblin, being “taken” by the goblin, but in reality, his powers have changed him the same way power “changes” anyone in that it amplified who he always was. His home is full of masks as a symbol of the many masks he wears to blend in with the masses he holds in contempt, and the few peers he has (such as the general) see right through the masks and despise him. Norman is a malignant narcissist, projecting his misdeeds onto yet another mask as he kneels before it, begging for advice. Note that the suit and glider did not come with the goblin mask. Norman added it to show the world who he really was. On the flip side, Peter Parker has also been done wrong, in fact he was done wrong his entire life. He watched MJ date guy after guy, even watching his best friend move in on her because he was too shy to make a move. He was bullied and ostracized, hounded for rent, fired from a dead end job, late for everything and never being able to tell anyone why. Even after the spider bite, he was the same push over on the inside. Then there’s the nail in the coffin: living with the guilt that he could have prevented the murder of Uncle Ben. This was the event that changed him into “the man he was going to be for the rest of his life.” This is why he will never change no matter how much sense Norman makes. Both Peter and Norman have much in common on the outside (intelligence, power, secrets) but on the inside they are nothing alike. Peter wears his mask to protect the people he cares about. Norman wears his mask only to protect himself. Not even to protect his own son who he only uses to get closer to Peter as he fancies a younger version of himself. Peter is the son Norman thinks he wants, because all he has ever valued is power, and knowledge is power, but Norman has no concept of responsibility. And like all of his previous endeavors in life, he sets himself up for failure by assuming the worst in everyone. Norman is a narcissist and always was, and like all narcissists, he projects his own nature onto everyone. “Eventually they will hate you” is what happened to him, but he lacks the self awareness to ask why. Norman tries to pull Peter down to his level, almost as a way of proving to himself that he is right after all and that everyone else really is beneath him. But when proven wrong by the people of New York, who rescue Spiderman for a change, he is forced to face the truth. Norman sees he is only a fallible man, no different than the countless tyrants of the past who fancied themselves as gods, destined for the the trash bin of history. It’s fitting that he dies in an abandoned grave site, as he is already dead, and soon to be abandoned. We all have a bit of Peter and Norman inside of us. Such is the human condition. We’ve all been wronged by someone, “in spite of all [we’ve] done for them.” Abandoned, betrayed, cheated. But what makes us who we are is “who we choose to be.” So choose.

You hit the nail right on the head. Power, much like money, doesn't change people, but rather reveals their true selves. It could be easy to say that the transformation into the Green Goblin warped Norman Osborn's mind and made him a monster. But that's not true. He was always a monster on the inside. It was him becoming the Green Goblin that brought the monster to the surface. With Peter Parker, the spider bite didn't change him. After he kicked Flash Thompson's ass in school, he suddenly didn't become a macho alpha male jackoff who went around bullying people. He was still the same Peter from before. He could've easily brutalized Flash and left him a bloody mess, but he didn't even though Flash would've deserved it. He was simply defending himself. It really does emphasize what I believe the biggest difference between a hero and a villain. A villain is someone who wants to be a hero, but they want to be a hero for all the wrong reasons. They want the fame, glory and recognition. They want parades in the street and statues erected in their honor. They essentially want to be worshipped like an ancient god. A hero is someone who doesn't want to be a hero, but they have to be in spite of themselves. They don't do it for any reward or recognition. They simply do it because it's the right thing to do. Peter also realizes that you can't please everyone. Much like with Jameson, not everyone is going to see him as a hero. But he still does what he does because it's what's right.

From a business perspective, you gotta remember green goblin is a business man. He was trying to get Spider-Man to join him so they could rule newyork together. What he said was very smart and its true in life. No matter how good you are as a person, they will always push you to your limit and once you act like a bad person by mistake, makes you now the the villian forever. Doesn't matter how good you are, once you fail its over. Thats how your looked at. Its like people crave negativity and no matter how good you are, they want to see you fall. I love Spider-Mans response "its the right thing to do" No matter how much they see you in a bad light, even when no one is looking, Spider-Man does the right thing. The way this movie is made, written, the actors. Everything is great. Watched it at 5 years old in 2002 and i still love watching it. Toby over any Spider-Man. Excellent actor!
