"You were wandering in the dark and so was I. And we found each other. We found each other in the dark." John Coffey was afraid of the dark, but he went into the dark without hesitation to save a life.

Very few people seem to catch that. The reason why John is afraid of the car is because it’s what he experiences when he feels the pain of others and heals them.

I love that Melinda gave him that medallion - St. Christopher is a patron saint... he offered protection to travelers and against sudden death, many churches placed images or statues of him, usually opposite the south door, so he could be easily seen. He is usually depicted as a giant, with a child on his shoulder and a staff in one hand. Fits John Coffey.

A added layer to the writing. King gives hints to who John actully is through the movie. He heals people shows nothing but love and has the initials JC just like another guy just not spelled the same. Then his story is told by a man name Paul. Amazing way to convey the importance of those stories without dogma in the way. They even give hik a rennisance style halo with the projector. As for the mouse, I'm pretty sure it's to show how all have importance and deserve to live even a small mouse. Great reaction to a fantastic movie.

While I love the thought, one thing he could not do was reverse death. I do believe he was a miracle of God, but not a type of reincarnation of Jesus Christ.

My late father had a golfball-sized tumor. He was basically asymptomatic except seemed a little tired in the two weeks leading up to where my stepmom found him on the floor next to his bed, shit/pissed himself, cradling a bowl he'd been puking in. Slurring his speech, poor coordination. They removed it but he was never the same, it was like he'd had a stroke. They gave him another month or two. He lasted 2.5 years before it took over, and he was losing his mind in those last few months, confused about where he was, how he got there, what year it was, and he'd get paranoid about stuff like the doctors. I saw him on his 57th bday, two weeks before he passed. I'm just glad I never had to see him like Melinda, but it was still hard just to be around him after the initial tumor because he wasn't "my dad" anymore. I wish he were still around, even if in that state, I'd pick him up and take him on drives out to computer stores like when I was a kid and we drove around. I wasn't in the right place at the time though like I am now. I guess that's just how life goes.

Let me take a wild guess about your extensive, accurate vocabulary: you did crossword puzzles as a youth, an English teacher encouraged you and had regular vocabulary building exercises, etc. Do you write stories for yourself, about yourself? I was a typesetter/editor for quite a few years then became a Librarian at a university. It's amazing how impressed people can be when they hear somebody speak in an erudite manner and then define their fancy words. Just like Stephen King can do! Thank you for adding a worthy reaction to a large body of entertainment!

"We each owe a death - there are no exceptions - but, oh God, sometimes the Green Mile seems so long." Fun Fact: Originally set in 1932, the timeframe was bumped to 1935 so that the movie Top Hat (1935) could be featured. Jock Strap Incident Fact: Michael Clarke Duncan was uncomfortable with having to grab Tom Hanks' crotch for the scene where John cures Paul's urinary infection. Hanks left the set and came back to do the scene; Duncan grabbed Hanks' crotch and was shocked to discover that he had put an empty water bottle in his trousers. After that, Duncan felt more comfortable with the scene. Measuring Up Fact: In reality, Michael Clarke Duncan was of a similar height to his co-star David Morse, and was a couple of inches shorter than James Cromwell. Amongst other things, creative camera angles were used to create the illusion that Duncan, as John Coffey, towered over the prison staff, even "Brutal" Howell and Warden Moores. For one scene where Paul, Coffey and Brutal were in the same shot, Michael Clark Duncan was standing on a plank, David Morse stood on the ground, and Tom Hanks was standing in a trench dug into the ground just for that purpose.

As misinformed and uneducated as Mr. Valentine, are you. In this movie the mouse was named Mr. JINGLES. You both used the name Jangles who was a famous Black Man immortalized in song. The 1900's actor and dancer Gregory Hines was often called Mr. Bo Jangles for his skills... Mr. Jingles is just the name of a mouse in a Steven King novel.

If a mouse can live so long, how old was John Coffey?
@LittleBlueOwl318
@LittleBlueOwl318 Ай бұрын
Paul was 44 the year John Coffey walked the Green Mile (1935) which means he was born in 1891. So, in '99 Paul was 108 and Mr Jingles was 64 or 65 years old. A pet mouse in captivity has an average life expectancy of about 4-5 years... makes you wonder how long Paul will live, eh?! Several hundred years probably. And his penance is to lose everyone he loves, to outlive them all.

An interesting follow up to this might be "Of Mice and Men." In 1992, Gary Sinise (Lt. Dan) directed and started in a film version of the Steinbeck novel, with John Malkovich playing Lenny. Gary Sinise was one of the founding members of the Steppenwolf Theater Company in Chicago, and Malkovich was one of the first recruits to the company, so they had a friendship that had lasted almost 20 years when they made the movie.

That may very well be the most eloquent reaction I have ever watched of this movie. I can't believe your reaction videos only just now appeared in my suggestions. I'm really enjoying your channel. Michael Clarke Duncan fully deserved the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor that year, which remains an absolute travesty, in my opinion. We lost a terrific talent in 2012. I had the pleasure of reading this Stephen King serial novel back in 1996 before the movie was even made, at the recommendation of my roommate in the army who was just finishing the final installment. When it came time to watch the movie, I already knew what was about to unfold.... but due to Michael Clarke Duncan's and Tom Hanks' performances, it didn't spare me the tears or any of the emotion the story instills. Michael Clarke Duncan is the only actor whose portrayal of a book character was exactly as the character behaved and sounded in my mind when reading it for the first time. Just a fantastic job all the way around by the entire cast and crew, but especially writer/director/co-producer Frank Darabont.

It's always fun to watch first-time viewers become familiar with Percy. John Coffee had a very poor short-term memory, and had difficulty explaining himself in stressful situations. So he wasn't really capable of testifying in his own defense (plus the insinuation that his legal defender might not have put much effort into saving him). The book goes into more detail, of course. Arlen 'Chief' Bitterbuck killed a man in a fight over a pair of boots. Edouard 'Del' Delacroix raped and killed a girl in an alley, and then tried to cover it up by burning her body. The fire spread to a nearby boarding house, killing another three people. When the guards brought Del onto the block (not shown in the film), he fell off-balance and bumped into Percy's groinal area. Percy, in his own insecurity, beat Del halfway down the block, accusing Del of deliberately 'copping his joint,' as King put it in the book. Thus, the homophobic slurs. You use your vocabulary quite well; makes you very enjoyable to listen to. This is also the first time I gave a thought to a connection between John's repeated use of 'dog tired' and Hammersmith's comparison between black people and dogs. I'm sure others in this Comments section have clarified that John was passing on the 'badness' of Merlinda's tumor and the knowledge of Wharton's guilt to Percy, but I find your observation that he seemed to be 'healing Percy's soul' a very interesting concept to consider. We can only assume that that particular form of healing was simply beyond John's abilities. I know you saw, during Paul's 'vision' from John, that Klaus Detterick was pounding nails into a shed roof. If you're watching a copy with good audio, you can hear that every hammer blow is accompanied by the whispered sound 'Wharton, Wharton, Wharton.' I did a rough calculation, based on a generous 3-year lifespan for a wild mouse. If John caused Mr. Jingles to live approximately 67 years at LEAST, and if he extended Paul's life to a comparable degree, Paul could live over 2000 years.
@brandonflorida1092

Great reaction. When Paul said that his extreme long life was punishment for allowing John Coffey to be executed, that was just his interpretation and not necessarily true. I know that you have to distort the image for copyright purposes, but the ultra-close-up distortion is a very unsatisfying technique for the audience. Finally. to get some idea of what King meant Coffey to be, consider his initials.
@wadehines9971
@wadehines9971 28 күн бұрын
It seems to me that you misread the scene where Coffey passing the 'bad stuff' to Percy. The flow of the 'bugs' left John's mouth and entered Percy's mouth. You seemed to see John extracting something from Percy.

You missed the 1st part if the movie that laid the set up. Paul Holchum (Tom Hanks) had a urinary track infection.

If you haven't already seen it, Shawshank Redemption is an absolute must. Same director as Green Mile, set in a prison, and also based on a Stephen King story. Shawshank Redemption is usually included somewhere in everyone's list of greatest films ever.

I've never hated a character more than I hated Percy. Mice generally live appropriately 2 years so Mr. Jingles lived about 32 lifetimes. Extrapolated, that means that Paul Edgecombe might live 2,500 years. I think the real question is, how old was John Coffey?

I have found this movie EXTREMELY MOVING, for me. A lot of lessons are learned for us to be MORE than what we have learned in this world. All I can say is that I have seen Michael Clark Duncan in many films. He has played the part of an evil person, an arrogant person, but the first one was this film, where he plays the part of "GOD'S TRUE MIRACLE". THIS WILL BE THE ROLE THAT I WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER THE MOST. Great reaction, Mr Valentine 🎉

So this is one of my favorite movies and a very difficult watch. I was so surprised to learn it was based on a Steven King novel and even more shocked when I learned about the possible inspiration. George Junius Stinney Jr. was the youngest person to die in the electric chair. A 14 year old black boy was sentenced and put to death in South Carolina in 1944. The movie hit different after learning about the true story. Much love and keep on keepin on J.
