John Coffey was many things in this movie. Aside from being a Healer, he was also an Empath (One who can feel the pain of others). He was also a Seer (One who can see things that are not within his direct sight). But, his greatest gift was the ability to heal others. He could absorb evil (Pain, sickness, death, hate, etc.) and release it back into the ether, from which it came. This was done in the form of the "insects" that came from his mouth, that would disperse and dissipate.

For some context, the average lifespan of a common fieldmouse(which is most likely Mr. Jingles species) is around 1 year in the wild(due to predation), and 3 years in captivity. Assume we take the 3 year number. The average lifespan of a human Male in 1935 is reported to be 59.9 years, which we will round to 60 years. At the time Older Paul told Elaine about Mr. Jingles, 64 years had passed. (He was 108 now and 44 at the time.) Now, if we divide 64 by the 3 years a mouse in captivity can live, the math tells us that Mr. Jingles lived 21.3 lifetimes longer than the average mouse at least. Now if we take that number and apply it to Paul, it comes to 1,260 human years he could expect to live. And he's only on 108. Of course, it's entirely possible that the number of years was a set number rather than a proportional percentage. Still, it's a terrifying thought.

Great reaction to a very good movie.. I laugh at how young people act like 1999 was a hundred years back. Trust me.. when you get into a daily routine of life and responsibility and worries, time will start to fly by *so fast.* Before you even realize it, you will both be in your 50's watching some amazing tech machine and a future young couple will say, "Hey, today we are going to react to one of those very very Old movies from way back in 2024". And you will think, "wow, 2024?" "that seems like just a couple of years ago... where did the time go?"

It always surprises me that people don't expect something supernatural from the story. It is Stephen King. Also, it doesn't matter how old the movie is it? It depends on the actual story period

It's a lonely road to walk when you witness a true miracle of God. Even though 3 of my children witnessed it too, others still look at me like I'm mental when I speak of it. You can hear others tell you, read them in the bible, or see them in movies, but one can never prepare themselves for how profound it is if it happens to them. I read your post and didn't feel so alone. Thanks and God bless.

I am always fascinated when people, who have never seen this movie before, have been watching it for around an hour or so thinking they are watching a serious dramatic movie about death row inmates and the prison guards, AND BAM, next thing you know you're not only watching a dramatic movie but also a supernatural movie. It is my opinion that it was a conscious decision for the director and screen writer(s) NOT to include the reasons why the inmates were on death row. If the audience actually knew of the heinous crimes they committed, then they might not be as sympathetic for their plight. But yes, they had all been charged for some brutal murder(s).

Back in 1930's, the justice system was not fair for the poor and POC especially. Prisoners in the South were often declared guilty without proper legal defense. Jurors were typically male and always White. The attorney for John said there was no evidence of John's existence before his arrest, "If was as if he dropped from the sky. " There is a lot of religious symbolism throughout the film. The flying "insects" symbolizes disease, evil and death. John has scars on his back resembling stigmata. John recognizes the constellations in the night sky. The large cathedral-like windows over the guards desk show rays of light onto the green mile The light from the movie projector surrounds John's head like a halo.

Indoor plumbing is a fairly recent addition to modern homes. A century ago, many rural homes did not have an indoor toilet. Many still used "out houses" that were just a booth with a hole cut in the seat, under which you dug a hole. When the hole was full, you dug a new hole and set the out house over it, then buried the old hole.

Tom Hanks (Paul Edgecomb) and James Cromwell (Warden Hal Moores) were offered the roles of Andy Dufresne and Warden Sam Norton, respectively, in the movie "The Shawshank Redemption", but turned them down. Hanks was working on Forrest Gump at the time, and Cromwell turned down the role in favor of Bob Gunton. Other cast members from this movie who appeared in "The Shawshank Redemption" include Jeffrey DeMunn (the guard Terwilliger), who played the Prosecuting attorney at the beginning of the movie; William Sadler (Klaus Detterich), who played a prisoner named Heywood, and Brian Libby (the Sheriff who arrests John Coffey), who played a prisoner named Lloyd. Someone once said that John Coffey died letting the girls' parents believe that he killed their daughters because he didn't want them to live with the knowledge that the real killer was someone that they let into their home. Sam Rockwell said he had trouble with the scene where he threatens the two girls because they had become good friends. When the filmed the scene they couldn't stop laughing. Doug Hutchison offered to pay $20 to anyone who could recite his lines during the Del execution scene word for word by heart. Several people successfully quoted the lines. What Hutchison didn't know was that they were reading the lines on giant cue cards that people were holding up behind Hutchison's back.

John Coffey is a Christ figure. He appeared out of nowhere, as if he had just “fallen out of the sky.” He had foreknowledge of future events. He can see the good or evil that is in men’s hearts. He can heal illness and afflictions and resurrect the dead (if it’s not too late). He is innocent, with a pure soul, yet he is made to suffer and die because of the sins and wickedness of others. And even his initials are J.C., just like Jesus. (Recall the scene where John is watching his first-ever flicker show, and the light from the movie projector is illuminating his head from behind, just like a halo: The Christian symbolism is unmistakable.) John has an acute, highly developed sense of empathy, which is why he can feel Del’s pain from afar. Unfortunately, this also means that Coffey can sense all of the cruelty, suffering, and evil going on in the world around him - an ability that he is unable to control or turn off, by the way - which caused him great distress over the course of his lifetime, eventually prompting him to seek relief through death…

1. YOU WILL CRY😭😭 2. Dabbs Greer/old Paul was ill during production, so his part was done later. He also played Reverend Alden on "Little House on the Prairie". 3. Hammersmith was not a good lawyer. (most likely a racial thing. It was 1935 South.) 4. In the book King briefly covers why the Chief and Del are on death row. 5. This movie was nominated for Best Supporting Actor (MCD) and Best Cast but unfortunately neither won.😭😭 6. Players in other King adaptations: Jeffery DeMunn: Shawshank Redemption, The Mist, Storm of the Century and William Sadler: Shawshank Redemption, The Mist. David Morse: The Langoliers. Patricia Clarkson played Margarat White in King's remake of Carrie". Needless to say, it was a much different part. 7. Movie magic Electricity makes the body contract. Del wouldn't be able to scream. I know it' just for the movie because of the length of the execution scene. 8. IRL James Cromwell is a vegan and didn't want to grill meat for the BBQ scene but was told that in 1935 people actually ate meat so he agreed to have some on the grill. 9. RE Percy: Couldn't happen to a nicer guy. KARMA's a Bitch. BTW Kudos to Doug Hutchison for the great job of playing Percy. EVERYONE hates him.🤬🤬🤬🤬 10. John also rescues the other patients at Briar Ridge. 11. IRL both David Morse and James Cromwell are about the same height as Michael Clarke Duncan. They used planks, a small bed and smaller chair along with trick photography/angles to make John look taller. 12 The scene where John takes Mr. Jingles for safe keeping before Del's execution, they used a real mouse, and it pooped on Paul's shoulder, and he brushed it off. 13. Now we know what the "leftover is fine" dry toast is for. 14 EVERYBODY cries and has to take time to reflect. Congratulations you just experienced. the GREATEST MOVIE EVER. (GOAT)🤩 15. Four words for you: Stephen King. You're WELCOME!

Since it’s one of your first movie reactions, I’ll offer some suggestions. To me, the worst reactors are: 1. Squeamish people who cover their eyes and don’t even see what the filmmaker is presenting… and 2. Reactors who try to guess the ending, creating their own spoilers. In this case, correctly guessing “an innocent man is accused” before the movie even started, ruined the reaction for me, and I immediately lost any desire to watch it. Seeing a genuine reaction to surprises and plot twists is the best part of watching reactions… FYI

John Coffey... JC JC... Jesus Christ. When John tells Tim Hanks what to say to "the Father" at his judgement, remember that Jesus referred to "the Father" in heaven when He would speak of God in heaven.

Shawshank is considered by many to be the best movie ever( not me,The Godfather to me) Same director and based on Steven King's short story. @@KenAndAlexReacts

As much as Del seemed nice, what he did made me feel nothing when he suffered all that pain in the electric chair being how all the people he killed suffered while burning to death in a building he set fire to cover up the rape of a child. They left that out on purpose to hit you in the feels for Del. So knowing this prior to seeing the movie, no sympathy from me.

I couldn't stand your reaction. They talked like parrots from the beginning, giving their opinion on everything they saw, they even talked over the dialogues of the film. I would never watch a movie with you!
