"The Grifters" is an underrrated masterpiece. Frears is genius here, counting on brilliant performances by Huston, Bening and Cusack. It's a perfect noir made in 1990.

Honest to Christ, Pat Hingle's performance in this single scene makes him one of the most terrifying villains I've ever seen -- he's almost TOO good!

What's so scary about Hingle as Bobo is that he's giving her a chance to correct the situation. He's all business, he knows Lily steals but she makes him money. The whole scene is that she is stealing TOO MUCH and he wants to remind her that she has a gig as long as she doesn't get too greedy. That's all it is too, a chance...one he suspects Lily won't take. But Lily has no options, no resume, no "square" life...she's fucked.

Sadly this cuts off the next part of the scene, where Bobo and Lily are making pleasantries as he shows her out, as if they're best friends. It makes the savage scene beforehand it all the more shocking.

@@denisenoe7927 this was made a few years before cgi smoke. In my opinion, the cigar is real when he is smoking but becomes obviously fake when he's "burning" her hand. You can tell by the cherry, not exactly sure how to explain it but it's just fake looking, color is off and it doesn't have the details you see in real lit cigars.
