When a Persona character says "I want more power" it's a sympathetic/empathic moment because you know the depths of their struggle When an SMT character says "I want more power" you instantly look at what prompted them to say it and realize they're about to be a cosmic plaything that a God (Law or Chaos) takes advantage of to fuel Armageddon.

4:33 IIRC there's a bit in P2 : Eternal Punishment (a game where almost every playable character is an actual adult) where after you finish a certain dungeon you are suddenly all by yourself because everyone realized that they have to go to work tomorrow and they just leave the party because they don't have the time or energy to keep hanging out with you afterward. It's kind of nice that the game has the courage to do that to you, to not act as if the entire universe and everyone in it revolves around your character.

In Persona 3 there are days where your party members can't go into Tartarus because Yukari has Archery, Akihiko has boxing, etc. Junpei will sometimes just fuck off to play video games or watch movies at the movie theater and I honestly felt the absence of party members having lives outside of you in P4 and P5 especially. Like, how the fuck is Yosuke, a shift manager at Not-Walmart able to sneak off for hours at a time to do dungeon crawling? The only one who makes sense to always be available is Chie because she's the only one who seems to have zero obligations outside of school and the most she does outside of the party is occasionally hangout with Kou and the Basketball club (Teddie works at Junes to pay for his expensive appetite so even Teddie is busy).

And this is how Pat's comparison to the Yakuza series hits. Nagoshi really struck gold by making what is essentially an adult oriented shounen based on alternate life choices instead of aiming for the nostalgia bait. I mean, I can relate to both in a way, I'm also a Montrealer in my mid thirthies who gamed most of my life. Sure I had more free time in high school, but I don't miss any of the rest, high school sucked, having no income meant I couldn't get what I wanted and had to beg my lower middle-class parent for new games or money until I reached 16 and was legally allowed to work part time. I get the cultural difference here, but it's true that Japan could offer so much more than the constant flow of high school stuff.

Pat described perfectly why I love SMT so much ... It's may be one of the oldest JRPG franchise out there but it's just so ... Anti- JRPG. It feels like that metal grandpa who's laughing at the dumb kids walking down his street. The fact that SMTV starts with you leaving the school before dropping you into the apocalypse 20 min later is the cherry on top, it feels like the perfect middle finger to people who wanted just an edgier Persona 5.

I agree like the first game gave you that weird fever dream. Yet when you find out demons killed your mom, shit is locked down and now there's three factions and your dog is now a Demon. Mainline SMT games are very interesting to me because to me it's a always feels like the game doesn't like you. It does not want you to have fun. You have to pry the fun from the games cold clammy fingers. But when you do, and you get a basically an entire extra round on your first turn and you just annihilate whatever your fighting and don't give them a turn. It feels amazing because you've been on the receiving of that before, so it tastes so much more sweeter.

This. This is why I could never get into modern Persona. They're great games no doubt, but god the pacing kills it for me. These games are 100 hours long approximately and it feels like about half is wasted. It's why classic Persona and many other MegaTen games resonated more with me. P1: You and your friends, (btw you're not a high school transfer and already have friends in P1 and P2 so no long introductions) play the Persona game and weird stuff happens. Go find out why. P2 IS: You get a strange message from Ekichi and find out Joker is taking peoples dreams. Find out why. P2 EP: You're an adult article writer and find out about JOKER, who kills people. Find out more! It's so much more snappy and gets to the point; and SMTV also continues this with it's 15 minute intro.

SMT 5 is harder than SMT 4 due being more balanced. I honestly don't mind the high school setting despite its prevalence in Japanese media. I mean I'm not exactly a fan of it, but I don't dislike it either. I get why it's so prevalent, so it's just whatever to me. Probably helps that the setting is versatile as fuck and works with basically any genre. Now the real worst setting is *generic fantasy world*, especially the more recent ones with video game mechanics for some stupid reason. On one hand, I can't wait to play SMTV. On the other, I still have JPRGs and a couple other games in my backlog, most notably TMS Encore, Disgaea 6, Disgaea 5, Disgaea 4, and Indivisible

Pat basically spelled it out perfectly and theres little else to say. Its like complaining about some village kid getting the call to adventure and going on the heroes journey. That said play Persona 2 if you want a Persona game without teenagers. it can't be repeated enough. At this point I'd want ATLUS to give that game a remake so people can stop asking for it.

Regarding performance, I really like the game and value it as a Switch exclusive due to Atlus's history with Nintendo on the SFC and 3DS, but you can feel that the game is being held back by its own hardware. The performance isn't nearly as bad in the field scenarios as it is in the intro, but I do hope it comes to other consoles sooner rather than later, because there were some very clear concessions made so it could launch on Switch. It's extraordinarily impressive how much they were able to squeeze out of the thing though, especially since a Switch is just a glorified tablet. Also there's just the fact that not everyone has a switch and more platforms are generally better. That's why I saw people emulating it way quicker than most new Switch games, which I kinda can't fault them for.

@@Ganmorg I agree for the most part, but as we can, the average PS fan is a little more "selective" when picking a game to buy. Juvenile enough to be as childish as it wants and old enough to learn of maturity. But also because I just dont want to go to another setting just because its another setting, then smoke a cigarette and act like I got a higher taste just because I watch an anime where the characters are adults, you know? This is not really relevant to the conversation, but I notice Persona and SMT fans seem to be at eachothers throat a lot of the time and I find that kinda pointless? I get Persona can seem to overshadow SMT, but both these games are made by ATLUS and share many simillarities alongside differences. With the fandom, it seems like you have to like one and hate the other. For context, I'm a Persona fan, but I've gotten curious to the point of checking out SMT III Nocturne footage alongside SMTV. They look like interesting games.

I am not at fans throats about either or. I am at reviewers throats for continuing to force persona vs smt narratives. All the reviews that came out for smt v were like we wish this was more like Persona and ignored that everything they wanted to change was a core for the smt franchise. I used to like Persona (4’s constant mishandling of Kanji and Persona 5’s grossness with Ann and other characters turned me off of it permanently) and I also liked SMT and most spin offs. I just think fans and reviewers alike need to stop comparing apples and oranges, expecting the same out of one series as they do the other.

The more vocal voices just want their opinions to be mirrored and don't really care to understand why someone might like SMT more than Persona or vice versa. And the even more difficult thing is that SMT still encompasses the spinoffs, which some people like more than the mainline ones. And even within that, there's fighting. If you look at some videos for SMT Devil Survivor, you'll find people having similar arguments about the differences in tone between the 2 games(1 has the classic SMT vibe, while 2 goes for a P4 esque tone of happy-go-lucky stuff interspersed between really dark situations). There's just too many varying opinions and not enough legitimate rapport built to have friendly discussions.

If you think that sounds stupid, go get a refund now while there's still time."
